I absolutely adore the Southern Alberta city of Medicine Hat!
I end up visiting quite regularly because two of my dearest friends Jack and Nicole live there.
And I also work in the region a fair bit with Tourism Medicine Hat—which is the reason for my most recent visit (June 2022) to the Hat!
For this specific post, I teamed up with Kesha (an English Bulldog) and Jax (a Retriever mix) for very impawtant research—figuring out which patios in Medicine Hat are dog(pet) friendly! Make your way through these patios one-by-one or plan a dog-friendly patio crawl!
All of the Medicine Hat patios I’ve listed here either have sidewalk patios street access which always allows dogs), definitely allows dogs (includes water bowls or treats for dogs), or I’ve called / asked in person to check and they confirmed they do allow dogs.
It’s worth noting that as of May 2022, Alberta no longer requires restaurant patios to apply for separate dog or pet patio permit—any patio can be dog or pet friendly as long as it has a separate (outdoor) entrance/access (dogs don’t go inside the restaurant). It’s up to the individual restaurant to determine if they want to allow dogs on their patio or not (so the more people ask restaurants—the more dog friendly patios there will be!)
If there is a patio in Medicine Hat that has outdoor access—it’s likely dog-friendly, they may just not know they don’t need a separate permit (so show them this guide + the May 2022 news article!) It’s also worth noting that while I reference this as dogs primarily, I acknowledge more people have outdoor cats who walk / leashed or go in strollers around town with them, so in theory, any dog-friendly place should be suitable for any leashed, well-behaved pet.
As a general rule, you should message or call the place you want to bring your dog to double check—I’ve done this initial research but things to do change!

I hope you found this blog guide useful and enjoy your patio visits with your pets!!
Note: my visit to Tourism Medicine Hat was sponsored. Experiences were hosted by The Hat. This does not impact opinions or views stated in this post—I love exploring this awesome little city and I love patio hopping—even more so with pets involved!
