Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Celebrate Alberta Metis Fest! (Metis Crossing)
Just 1.5 hours north of Edmonton at Metis Crossing, check out the first in-person Alberta Métis Fest taking place this weekend June 24-26 (with main events happening Saturday June 25). There’s performances, an artisan market, jigging competition, family-friendly activities. Free to attend, free parking, but no pets please.
Alberta Métis Fest is the perfect way to celebrate National Indigenous History Month and to appreciate a variety of talented artists and Métis community members!!
Note: I’m working with Alberta Metis Fest this year and will be taking in activities at Metis Crossing on Saturday! Say hi if you see me.
Check out the I AM – Indigenous Market Collective (Downtown Market)
In Edmonton if you’re looking for a tangible way to mark the month / belated National Indigenous Peoples Day, buy from an I AM Indigenous Market Collective Indigenous maker at the Downtown Farmers Market this weekend! Find their main booth on the second floor, and during summer, they have an outdoor booth as well.
Celebrate at Edmonton Pride Fest (Churchill Square)
The FREE Edmonton Pride Fest takes place this Fri June 24 and Sat June 25 at Churchill Square downtown, with performances (including from Fefe Dobson, Lakota Tootoosis and more), drag queens, DJs, food trucks and a craft beer garden (not free), and more.
Head down to the 30th Pets in the Park (Hawrelak Park)
The Edmonton Humane Society is celebrating 30 years of Pets in the Park taking place at Hawrelak Park this Sunday June 26 with all sorts of activities for your pets (and you) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a primarily dog-focused event (though you are welcome to bring any of your well-behaved, leashed pets), and this year there is a Cat Parade on the Main Stage that I am going to be a guest judge for!
Check out the Alberta Circus Arts Festival June 23-26!
I’ve partnered with Firefly Theatre & Circus to promote their upcoming circus arts festival.
Don’t miss the Alberta Circus Arts Festival (ACAF) which runs this week June 23-26, 2022 and for the first time ever will be live in person!
Enjoy circus performances with acts from across the country over four days at French Quarter at Campus Saint-Jean in Edmonton.
Dedicated to the creation of a regional voice for contemporary circus, Firefly Theatre & Circus has produced the event that will feature four shows from artists across Canada, professional development initiatives for artists and industry sector support for producers, presenters and instructors.
The Alberta Circus Arts Festival is full of amazing, powerful, athletic and talented circus artists, performing in a small-but-tall intimate theatre. It’s like seeing Cirque du Soleil in your living room!
Congrats to my Circus Arts Festival Giveaway winner!
Last week, newsletter subscribers got a chance to win a pair of tickets to an Alberta Circus Arts Festival Throwback show, a circus and acrobatic spectacle paying homage to the music, television, video games and pop culture of the 1980s and 1990s. Congratulations to Holly N., the randomly selected winner of 2 tickets to the show. Check out their other shows and activities and attend this year’s festival!
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Book a Savoury and Sweet Strathcona Food Tour! (various locations)
Alberta Food Tours returns in Edmonton for the summer this weekend! Consider booking a Savoury and Sweet Strathcona Tour which features stops at MEAT, Sugared & Spiced, Pact Coffee, Made by Marcus and Remedy Cafe! Karen’s team is great.
Check out the new Vish vegetarian restaurant (10326 124 St.)
There’s a new Vegetarian restaurant along 124 Street called Vish! It looks like they specialize in hummus-focused items, some Moroccan dishes, and Tahini based shakes. Let me know how it is if you go!
Visit the new Market St. Local Foods Store (10025 167 St.)
There’s a new local food shop in west Edmonton called Market St. Local Foods Store where you can that carries an assortment of Canadian and Alberta made food snack products, coffee, gift boxes and more.
Try East Indian, Nepalese, and Hakka cuisine at Kathmandu Rasoi
Thanks to Angela for suggesting Kathmandu Rasoi as a food to try this week. Kathmandu Rasoi is a west Edmonton restaurant specializing in East Indian, Nepalese and Hakka food! From Angela:
“It was absolutely amazing! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before.”
Grab a panino and other snacks from the Italian Centre (various locations)
On my way out of town for work last weekend I swung by the Italian Centre to buy a panino for the road. This is the Italian Centre’s signature sandwich with olive oil, oregano, and ajvar sauce on a fresh, crispy baguette, loaded with Genoa salami, capicollo, mortadella, & provolone. Get it or mild and stay tuned! The Italian Centre is also donating gift cards for my upcoming #ExploreABwithMe summer campaign, so more reasons to visit the Italian Centre (and explore Alberta!) coming up soon.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
Small Business Spotlight
Need some photos taken? Check out Paula Gerein Photography. Paula specializes in Documentary Family Photography—a genre I had never heard of before (but think is an awesome approach)! This is how Paula explains her style of photography:
“With this approach, nothing is forced or created, it is simply a family (in any and all definitions of that word) being together and being themselves. With my photographs, I aim to capture the way personalities shine, the connections between people, as well as the true feeling of what their life feels like right now. For everything from random day-to-day with toddlers, quality time on camping trips, to end-of-life moments with elders. I think many people tend to default to posed family photography because it is what has ‘always’ been done but there are many people who are simply more drawn to photographs of real, raw moments.”
Got a local business or know of a local business that could use some love?
Suggest them to be featured in my Small Spotlight section of this weekly newsletter!
Oops—I missed this week’s YouTube
I missed the Tuesday deadline for my YouTube video this week (cries 🥹, lol), but thought I’d still use the space to suggest you check out my past YouTube videos and subscribe to my channel if you haven’t yet! I’ve been sharing a weekly video via my Lindork Does Life YouTube Channel since Sept 2021, highlighting things I try that you might want to try, food I eat that you night want to eat, and places to visit that you might want to visit (so—similar to what I already share—but in video format!)
