Back in 2017, I created a Guide to Instagrammable Walls of Medicine Hat! It was part of my (still ongoing) mission to map out Instagrammable Walls of cities around the world.
Back then, I’d say the walls were sparse (but still, some great options!)
Fast forward to now (2020), and I’m so thrilled to see that Medicine Hat has fully embraced its ‘Instagrammable-ness!’ What a big facelift.
Now, the southern Alberta city has an annual Medicine Hat Mural Festival, and is actively adding amazing murals by local and out-of-town artists alike, transforming alleyways and more, all over the city—but especially in its downtown. Many of the walls that I had first catalogued in that 2017 post have now been replaced by new businesses or new walls!! The city has even put together its own suggested mural walk as an official activity you should do when you explore the city! Pretty neat, hey?
I didn’t want to erase the original guide from 2017 so I’ve instead created this UPDATED guide, that brings over a couple of the walls that are still around from the first version of the guide, and then adds all the amazing, new walls that have gone up since that time. I was able to explore these new walls during this July 2020 trip on a sponsored visit with Tourism Medicine Hat.
Be sure to check out my other Medicine Hat travel guides + blog posts for other ideas on what to do, things to see, and places to eat in the city while you’re on the hunt for these Instagrammable Walls (I’ll be adding new ones from my July 2020 trip shortly!!):

UPDATED Guide to Instagrammable Walls of Medicine Hat
WHAT IS AN INSTAGRAMMABLE WALL?
Instagrammable Walls add such beauty to a city, and can attract people to a location as a destination. Finding Instagrammable Walls is one of my favourite things to do when I travel, and even a favourite thing to do where I live. Every city has them. Being ‘Instagrammable’ simply describes the wall’s aesthetic. These pretty, interesting coloured, textured, muralled, highly photogenic walls make a great backdrop for photos with yourself or your friends. They can be indoor or outdoor, but I’ve primarily focused on outdoor walls (they’re more accessible!) You’ve likely walked or driven by Instagrammable Walls but maybe didn’t notice it’s ‘Instagrammable.’
If you’re from out of town, watching for and photographing Instagrammable Walls is a really great way to explore a new place, and in today’s social media world, it gives you some really great settings for vacation photos to share online! If you’re in town, finding Instagrammable Walls makes for an amazing activity to explore your city and neighbourhoods, and also learn more about arts and artists.
