Things to Do This Week

Don’t miss this FREE September long weekend event!! The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is bringing the magic of Disney to Churchill Square for FREE performances this Friday and Saturday Sept. 1 & 2.

Symphony in the Square presents Disney in Concert: A Dream is a Wish where audiences will be transported into the musical world of classic and contemporary Disney animated feature films to discover that dreams really do come true. Stories are told through the talents of four Broadway-calibre singers, original Disney film footage on the big screen, and sweeping orchestral scores performed by your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra! The shows start at 7 p.m. each night. Plan to arrive early, bring your own chairs, cushions, blankets to grab a good spot and enjoy the festivities. There will also be food trucks on site and a fireworks show to cap off the performance. It’s sure to be a magical experience!

Things to do this week: free performances at the legislature, free Star Party at Elk Island, discount on Shakespeare and more!
  • Be part of Elk Island National Park’s Star Party (Elk Island)

    • Elk Island is hosting a Star Party on Sept. 3 for the long weekend—FREE with valid park entry. There are family-friendly activities from 2 to 9 p.m. and Night Astronomy from 9 p.m. to very late (see the stars!)

  • Catch the final week of Freewill Shakespeare Festival (EXPO Centre Grounds)

    • Edmonton’s Freewill Shakespeare Festival is on until Sept. 3 and they’ve given me code FWP20 to share with followers if you’d like 20% off festival tickets! (only valid on full price show tickets, not valid on pay what you will or student/senior tickets).

  • Attend Alberta Day at the Legislature (10800 97 Ave.)

    • There’s lots of FREE activities happening at the Legislature Grounds on Saturday, Sept. 2 for ‘Alberta Day’ including main stage performers, workshops, a Beer Garden, food trucks, drone show and more. I am quite happy to see they are doing drones instead of fireworks and my fav local K-pop dance group APRICITY are one of the performers!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: steak, build your own noodles, Colombian empanadas and more!
  • Visit Colombian cafe Sabor Los Andes (10985 127 St.)

    • There’s a little strip in Westmount neighbourhood that’s super cute—with Twice Cream (ice cream) and new-ish Colombian cafe Sabor Los Andes. They started as a food truck (and still do some events). I tried and really enjoyed their empanadas at an event recently, and would like to give their arepas a try!

  • Build your own bowl at the new location of Noodleholic (3350 Parsons Rd.)

    • Noodleholic has moved from Chinatown to south Edmonton (sad for Chinatown) so consider checking out their new location! I’m a fan of this place because it specializes in Build Your Own Noodle Soup! Pick the broth, noodle type, toppings and enjoy! They also have set soup, clay hot pot rice and other delicious dishes.

  • On the noodle theme, get some noodle soups + cold noodles at Tang Bistro!

    • I love dining at Tang Bistro (8715 109 St. by the High Level Bridge) and was recently hosted for lunch where we had some of their cold noodles with chicken (summer special—really good!), braised beef noodle soup, dumplings, garlic cucumbers and Chinese hamburger “Rou jia mo!” Check it out!

  • Share a bite at Arbour in Old Strathcona (10421 82 Ave.)

    • Everyone keeps telling me I’ve got to try Arbour, a new, chef-driven restaurant in Old Strathcona that offers “shareable plates and pizzas.” The talented chef behind HOM is now working at Arbour. My friends have raved about the radish dish and flatiron steak in particular. I need to go!

  • Experience a Pryohy Supper at St. Basil’s (10819 71 Ave.)

    • St. Basil’s Cultural Centre is well-known for their wholesome perogie diners (Parish’s Pryohy Supper). The next one is Friday, Sept 1 from 4:30-7 p.m. (or until they run out of food). Pay for access to a selection of perogies, cabbage rolls, kubasa sausage, fish, salad, dessert.

  • Get pizza from Community Taps + Pizza (8232 Gateway Blvd.)

    • Thanks to Diane for this pizza recommendation at Community Taps + Pizza! She absolutely loves the bacon and brussell sprouts pizza. They do both New York style and Detroit style pizza!

  • And here’s a few more food events coming up you may be interested in…

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

Small Business Spotlight

I recently went to a Flower U-Pick for the very first time with my mom and it was extremely lovely. We booked Fern’s Flowers Garden and really enjoyed our experience but there are a few around Edmonton you can choose from. A super cute date idea, whether that’s a mom-daughter date, friends, siblings, partners and whatever other date pairing you can think of lol.
