Don’t miss the final weekend of the Edmonton Fringe (Old Strathcona)
Last chance to take in some street performers or shows at North America’s largest and longest-running fringe festival, the Edmonton Fringe runs until Aug. 27! I really enjoyed the improv show Agent Thunder and we’re going to check out yegDND (Dungeons & Dragons themed improv) on the final day!
Also be sure to stop by the ATB Atrium / Community Patio (by the Artisan Vendors and Orange Hall) and play their FREE Vends with Benefits prize vending machine. Every player is a winner!! Every vending machine entry is also entered into ATB’s Possibility Pot for a chance to win $10,000 (half for you and half for a charity of your choice!) Food to Try This Week
Say au revoir to Chartier (5012 50 St., Beaumont)
One of the Edmonton area’s best restaurants Chartier in Beaumont has announced its closure coming up on Sept 30. The rustic, French-Canadian restaurant that broke Kickstarter records when it first opened in 2016 has opened about its challenges with the pandemic, loans, rising food costs and inflation—and have chosen to go out on a high note rather than struggle / go into further debt / or morph into something it isn’t. This place is special! Plan to say goodbye before Chartier closes at the end of September.
Have a sip and share a bite at Dolly’s Cocktail Bar (9902 109 St.)
I had a girls night with a friend at the newish Dolly’s Cocktail Bar, one of the most unique spaces in the city because of how ~pink~ it is! Share a few plates (Peruvian-inspired cuisine—we loved the chicken lollipops and pork belly), and choose from a pretty wide selection of drinks + don’t leave without snapping a cute photo! Wearing pink is not required but it is fun lol.
Satisfy some cravings at 852 Hong Kong Cafe (3040 Calgary Trail)
Sometimes I get cravings for cuisine at 852 Hong Kong Cafe, like a simple spam and egg sandwich, or chef’s special chicken (pepper chicken, or Singapore style stir-fried with a peanuty shacha sauce), or choose from any number of noodle dishes! My friends and I shared a lil HK feast after a Fringe show this week.
Grab a Mango Matcha Latte (various locations)
Did you see my recent bubble tea video? Someone asked what my favourite bubble tea is and I think (at least as of the last few months), the answer is Mango Matcha Latte with tapioca and popping boba (or jelly). I love the one from Hobby Tea in Spruce Grove or Boba Bar in Sherwood Park.
Head to Rib Night at Dogpatch (10158 90 St.)
There’s only a few more Thursdays left to take in Dogpatch’s Rib Night, featuring a half rack of slow roasted baby back ribs, signature coleslaw, fresh baked cornbread muffin brushed with honey butter, Mexican street corn topped with chipotle crema, tajin + cilantro. Plan to take a walk in the neighbourhood before or after—it’s located in a lovely area!
And here’s a few food events coming up you may be interested in…
The Old Beverly Cafe is doing a night of live music on Friday, Aug. 25.
Aug. 26 is the final day of operation for Narayanni’s. Give them a goodbye!
The Renaissance Airport Hotel / Halo Bar Bistro is hosting a Derby-themed brunch this Saturday, Aug. 26 supporting Second Chance Animal Rescue.
For Pride weekend, Darling is doing a Pride BBQ on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Grab tickets to The Common’s 14-year Anniversary Boat Party on Sept. 3.
Don’t miss Feed the Soul x Cocktail & Jerk Festival’s Firelight Rooftop Fete on Sept. 3! They’ve offered me discounts to share with subscribers.
Use LINDORK5 for $5 off a Sips N Eats Package or LINDORK10 for 10% off any ticket or package.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
Small Business Spotlight
Thanks to Edmonton Kayaks for gifting me rentals of Alberta’s first transparent, LED glow-in-the-dark kayaks. My friend and I had a pretty dreamy date at Big Lake in St. Albert, and we happened to catch one of the best prairie sunsets of the summer. Highly recommend if you’re looking to squeeze in some outdoor adventure before it gets too cold. You enter the water from the Riel Recreation Park and have the option to go down the Sturgeon River (more paddling involved) or to Big Lake (more chill).
Don’t forget to #ExploreABwithMe!
Don’t forget to share how you’re Exploring Alberta this summer by tagging me + #ExploreABwithMe in posts before Sept. 11—to be entered to win a getaway to Elevated Escapes glamping dome near Kananskis! You’ll also be entered to win gift cards to fuel your Alberta adventures from the Italian Centre Shop.
From the Blog Vault
Around this time last year I was headed down to Waterton Lakes National Park to explore! Be sure to check out my Waterton Travel Guide for What to Do and Where to Eat in this very special part of the province, the only national park in Alberta—even Canada—that goes from prairies to mountain.
