Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: Heritage Festival, CATVIDEOFEST, River Watch Eco Floats, and more!
  • Travel the world at the Heritage Festival (Edmonton EXPO Grounds)

    • My favourite food festival of the year—Heritage Festival—returns this long weekend (Aug 5-7) at a new location the Edmonton EXPO Grounds / Borden Park. This three-day multicultural celebration features food, displays and cultural performances and this year is their 50th anniversary! Find food-on-sticks from all sorts of regions around the world (and more lol). I’ve actually been asked to be one of their judges so I am looking forward to sharing my favourite picks (watch for that on social media!)

  • Catch one of many music festivals happening around town (various locations)

  • Dance it up at Disco in the Park (Louise McKinney Riverfront Park)

    • Okay this also counts as a music festival but I thought I’d break it out on its own since it’s in Edmonton proper. Check out the line-up and get tickets for Disco in the Park! New this year there will also be roller disco!!

  • Book a River Watch EcoFloat (North Saskatchewan River)

    • The River Watch Institute of Alberta is back this summer with Ecofloats! Join the city’s certified and official river guides as they take you on a safe, fun and personalized rafting experience down the North Saskatchewan River. It’s a great guided intro to river activities, well priced with lots of date options but they do sell out fast so be sure to snag August spots before they’re gone.

  • Check out the CAT VIDEO FEST (The Metro Cinema, 8712 109 St.)

    • CATVIDEOFEST is a compilation reel of the latest and best cat videos, shared on the big screen at The Metro Cinema this Aug 5 and 7, in partnership with Community Cats Edmonton (who will receive a portion of ticket sale!) Having fun. Helping cats. Don’t miss this!

  • Pick up some gifts at Stationary Store Day (Majesty & Friends, 12024 107 Ave)

  • Cheer on the Edmonton Stingers in their Playoff Game!

    • The Edmonton Stingers (our local basketball team!) is doing SO well—they’ve made it to the playoffs again this year and the first playoff game is this Friday. Although not in Edmonton, there will be an Official Watch Party at 1ST RND. It’s from 6-9 p.m. on Fri, Aug 4 (game starts at 7 p.m.) Unfortunately no other playoff games will take place in Edmonton but can’t wait for next year!

  • You can also look ahead at a list of big summer events over on my blog!

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats (and drinks) this week: Indian cuisine, a custom cocktail, fried chicken and more!
  • Order my custom drink the Summer Sakoma at Fu’s Repair Shop ()

    • I partnered with Homestead Coworking and Fu’s Repair Shop to share more about the co-work space that houses one of the best restaurants in the city, and worked with their cocktail director and general manager Niki on a custom cocktail!

    • The Summer Sakoma a grapefruit sake drink (Sakoma is a play on the popular grapefruit Paloma drink, but this one has sake!) and it’s really good!! You can ask for it starting Friday until end of August. Depending on popularity/cups availability, you can get it in a super cute cat cup or a cute skinny glass.

    • This was a heads up / preview for newsletter subscribers! My Instagram post with more information about Homestead + Fu’s + the cocktail will be posted Friday.

  • Try the newly opened Dolly’s Cocktail Bar (9902 109 St.)

    • Speaking of Fu’s… it’s old location on 109 St. next to The Common, has now reopened as Dolly’s Cocktail Bar! This sister restaurant/bar is SO PRETTY IN PINK! and is sure to be the most popular new bar in town. They just opened today (on Wednesday’s we wear pink!)

  • Try the newly opened Ralph’s Fried Chicken (10807 Castle Downs Rd.)

  • Check out the newly opened Scoop N Roll (5098 Windermere Blvd.)

  • Go for a Vegan Feast at Naryanni’s (10131 81 Ave.)

    • Did you know Naryannis offers a Vegan Feast on Tuesday nights 5-8 p.m. You get nine different dish options for $17.50. (I’m pretty sure it’s every Tuesday, lol maybe double check before you go). Naryannis is a South-African/Indian restaurant in Old Strathcona.

  • Eat at Suvera South Indian Kitchen & Bar (15960 109 Ave.)

    • Thanks to Alex for sending in this recommendation for Suvera South Indian Kitchen & Bar! “They are so nice there and l think not many foodies know about this super authentic place. We visited southern India years ago and this place is the real deal. I’d recommend the Sunday brunch because you get a lil bit of everything but otherwise for sure get any kind of dosa, and the paneer butter masala and the bhindi masala but I’m sure everything is fantastic !! l ate here with my lady last Sunday for brunch and it was awesome! I think it could use some push and attention.”

    • I can’t wait to try too!

  • Take the whole family for Korean food + Korean karaoke at Soju (9110 51 Ave.)

    • I only learned last week that Soju Karaoke & Bar allows minors in their private karaoke rooms until 10:30 p.m.! I would not bring my baby to a public / big room / bar karaoke but private room with just friends or family? Yes! We brought Benjimin for some Korean karaoke + Korean food (Budae Jjigae and kimchi soups, bulgogi, Soju poutine, seafood pancake and more!) for my birthday. It was super fun (earmuffs and lower volume as he is still a baby lol).

  • Get the Crab Special from Kim Fat Market (9905 107 Ave.)

  • And here’s a few food events you may want to check out…

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
