Things to Do This Week

If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up even if it’s no longer a provincial requirement. Get vaccinated/boosted. Stay safe!

Things to do this week: Fort Edmonton Park season opening, ride the Street Car, catch live music and more!
  • Take in a few live music events downtown at The Backyard (10004 103A Ave.)

    • The Backyard, an awesome downtown Edmonton music and entertainment venue, is kicking off the summer season with a series of live music events including Vibes Music Festival, For the Love of Downtown Live Music Series, and Soul Search x The Backyard’s Patio Day Party. Various ticket admission applies (check the site!)

  • Ride the High Level Street Car all the way to Whyte Ave!

    • This summer the High Level Street Car is expanding its line to Whyte Ave! Streetcars ran in Edmonton starting in 1908, including along Whyte Avenue, so getting the line extended to the ave is a big deal. This is such a cute thing to do—if you’ve never ridden the line, make this summer the summer to do it. Check the schedule, fare, etc., info here.

  • Take in Opening Weekend at Fort Edmonton Park (7000 143 St.)

    • Fort Edmonton Park reopens for the summer season this weekend! Ride the 1919 steam train, take in the Indigenous Peoples Experience, visit the Midway and more. Fun for all ages!

  • Catch the final weekend of “The 39 Steps” (Walterdale Theatre, 10322 83 Ave.)

    • It’s the final weekend of “The 39 Steps“, a “fast-paced whodonut for anyone who loves the magic of theatre!” This is a Two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning show. Fun!

And don’t “furr”get what’s coming up next weekend!

Cat lovers: Get tickets to the virtual Edmonton Cat Festival!

The Edmonton International Cat Festival, one of Canada’s largest cat events, is back for a virtual pawty on May 28 & 29, 2022, with 100% ticket proceeds going to local cat rescue Community Cats Edmonton.

For those who may not know, this is an event I am so proud to have founded back in 2014, and thanks to an ameowzing organizing committee, sponsors, vendors, and YOU—purrticipants—we have been able to raise $126,000 for local rescues since we began.

The Cat Festival is typically a big, in-person pawty (at one point we had 3,000 people attend!!) But since the pandemmy we’ve been virtual (including this year).

We are pretty proud of the virtual line-up we’ve put together though, so please click to see the festival schedule, learn more and get tickets.

Food to Try This Week

Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.

Eats this week: Grab Jerk chicken wings, Thai curry, donairs and more!!
  • Try the BBQ from Transit Smokehouse & BBQ (12720 Fort Rd.)

    • Thanks to subscriber Connie who recommends you try the smoked meat sharing tray from Transit Smokehouse and BBQ located in the historic Transit hotel in north east Edmonton! “The ribs and brisket were number one with us. Side dishes of garlic mashed potatoes and sweet potato fries and sweet creamed corn—soooo good! And all the house made sauces to go with it! And live blues / jazz music that day – great mood! Live music every day, we will definitely return.”

  • Plan to visit the Beverly Towne Farmers Market (34 St. 118 Ave. Edmonton)

Check out some featured #AdoptAShopAB restaurants in Edmonton!

  • Try the donair from Eat and Dip (6877 Ad Astra Blvd.)

    • The secret they say, is in their sauce!

  • Try Jerk wings from Graham’s Jerkhouse (order online)

    • They also do scratch made beef, chicken, or vegetable patties (and other Jamaican dishes!)

  • Try some curries at Kaengthai Bistro (10152A 82 Ave.)

    • I am also always partial to a Tom Yum Soup.

These are just a few of the local restaurants who could use your support—and are featured in my #AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition initiative powered by ATB!

Shop my Zen Lion Design Collection

I’m so excited to announce an Asian Heritage Month-inspired apparel collection released in collaboration with Edmonton comfy statement apparel business Zen Lion Design.

As you know, May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada and AAPI Asian American / Pacific Islander Month in the United States. In North America, Anti-Asian hate crimes have increased significantly and steadily since the pandemic began in 2020.

This (and frankly, all race-based hate) is unacceptable.

Sherrell of Zen Lion Design (a Black, woman-owned, Edmonton-based business) and I have collaborated on this new collection that not only celebrates the Asian community but also highlights for allies the need to push back against racism.

Sherrell specializes in diverse and inclusive Clothing that creates a Conversation!

There are 10 designs in this collection! And 20% of proceeds from sales of this collection made from today to end of May will be donated to my chosen organization—Represent Asian Project—a Canadian platform I love, dedicated to celebrating, advocating and elevating Asian representation and voices in media and beyond.
