Let’s collectively support 100 food/drink businesses across Edmonton and Calgary this May!
Original Post:
I am so excited to announce that the support local business initiative I started in 2020 is BACK this May! And it’s bigger and better than ever thanks to support from my friends at ATB Financial!
I hope you’ll participate in:
#AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition powered by ATB Financial
This May, we’re expanding the Adopt a Shop initiative to include both Edmonton AND Calgary businesses with the help of my friend Carmen Cheng (@foodkarmablog) from Calgary!
For those new to Adopt A Shop, or if you just need a refresher, since 2020, I’ve organized three support local initiatives, two of which were powered by ATB.
Hundreds of people signed up to participate and collectively spent more than $50,000 at local businesses (this figure included cash bonuses contributed by ATB) and injected much needed money to local businesses struggling during the pandemic.
Where previous Adopt A Shop initiatives have been Edmonton-focused, this year’s edition will look at drumming up concentrated support of businesses in both Edmonton and Calgary.
#AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition, supported by ATB, aims to mobilize Albertans to spend at and support businesses as they continue to navigate the impacts of the pandemic. Businesses are still struggling and could use our help!
Here’s how to participate in #AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition powered by ATB Financial:
- From May 2 – May 5, 2022: Nominate a restaurant, bar, brewery or cafe in Edmonton AND/OR Calgary, who you think should be featured in #AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition!
The nomination period is over! We received 300 business nominations. Thank you!
- ATB, Carmen, and myself, will take all nominated businesses and curate a final list of businesses we’ll call on the community to support.
- Our final lists will feature 50 food-focused businesses in Edmonton and 50-food focused businesses in Calgary. We are also committed to ensuring at least half of all businesses selected are Black, Indigenous or People of Colour-owned, and woman-owned.
- We’ll touch base with businesses to let them know they’re being featured so it’s not a surprise when people hopefully start flocking to support them! ;)
- From May 16 – May 30, 2022: Final business nominees will be announced on my, Carmen and ATB’s social media channels and updated on this blog. We’ll then ask YOU (the community) to Adopt A Shop!
- Each business will have five slots available for you to sign up and spend.
- Participants will pledge to spend at least $25 at the shop they adopt over the course of two weeks (May 16 – May 30, 2022).
- Everyone who signs up to support will be entered for gift card prizes from participating businesses thanks to ATB.
- Everyone who shares about how they’re participating on social media will also be entered for gift card prizes! (details on that below).
- Albertans are welcome to sign-up and shop at more than one business over the course of the two weeks, or spend more than the minimum $25 per shop you adopt, but there will be five official slots available per business.
- Our hope is that Albertans will collectively spend at least $12,500 across 100 businesses in Edmonton and Calgary by the end of May, with even more $ cash supporting businesses thanks to gift card boosts by ATB Financial.
Why should you participate in #AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition powered by ATB Financial?
- You get great food + drinks from great local businesses
- You’re supporting local businesses during a challenging time
- You could win cash to enjoy even MORE great food + drink!
Remember:
- Everyone who signs up to support a business will be entered to win gift card prizes from participating businesses thanks to ATB.
- Everyone who shares about how they’re participating on social media will also be entered for gift card prizes!
To qualify for social media gift card prizes:
- Post about how you’re supporting businesses through #AdoptAShopAB on Instagram and/or Twitter
- We will be randomly selecting people who post about the initiative to win $25 gift cards to selected nominees courtesy of ATB.

- Please note: We love Instagram Story posts but only in-grid Instagram posts/tweets from public accounts shared between May 16-30, 2022 will qualify. We’d love to re-post your Stories!
Sponsor shout-out!! ATB was built to help Albertans. And they’ve been working hard during the pandemic to help keep the businesses we love in business. That’s why they’ve been such a perfect partner for my Adopt a Shop initiatives, and I’m so grateful for their continued support!
ATB connects Albertans with amazing local shops to support and to stimulate the economy. Every dollar we spend together helps get our province moving again! Providing Albertans a platform to contribute to a cause and make a substantiated impact for local businesses while creating connections and fostering a strong sense of community is paramount for ATB!
Why am I doing this?
- I lifted this explanation from my original #AdoptAShopYEG blog post back in 2020 because it’s still true: I love supporting local businesses. I have my own business and I grew up working at my parents business (that is also a business that continues to struggle due to and during this pandemic).
- I want to use my platform for good and this initiative is just one fun way to do that. Many businesses are still struggling and while we may not be able to support all of them, all the time, we can try to make an impact through initiatives like this.
- I’m also so grateful to ATB is partnering with me again as this initiative grows from just Edmonton into Calgary (and grateful to my friend Carmen in Calgary for helping spearhead the Calgary effort!)!
I hope you participate in this May 2022 #AdoptAShopAB: Foodie Edition powered by ATB!
