Earlier this year, I blogged 10 Delicious Chicken Dishes To Try In Edmonton as part of a delicious sponsored partnership with Alberta Chicken Producers, and it was so well-received, we decided to partner again and put together some recommendations for our friends in Calgary!
At that time, I had learned that buying chicken fresh never frozen typically means that the chicken came from a Canadian farm! I also learned that most Canadian chicken farms fulfill needs for their province first, then address demands or fill gaps in other areas of the country, which means that more often than not, the chicken you buy from a grocery store, or have in a restaurant, is Canadian chicken!
If you look for the the ‘Raised by a Canadian Chicken Farmer‘ red chicken label on chicken items at the store, that’s another way to tell that your chicken is Canadian.
Chicken dishes are some of my favourites and there’s a lot of wonderful ones you can try from local restaurants (in the case of this post—local to Calgary!) Of course with the pandemic (at the time of writing this post), you’re encouraged to order for pick-up/take-out. (Remember most third-party delivery services take a big cut of the profit from restaurants so it’s always better to place your order directly with the restaurant to most support them!)
I’m always excited to highlight amazing Alberta businesses that could use support. Since these are Calgary restaurants (and I’m in Edmonton), while I have tried dishes from many of these spots, I also incorporated some restaurant recommendations from Calgary friends too! (thank you to Jessie, Carmen, and Mike!)
Keep scrollin’ for details on how to enter to WIN one of four prizes:
- 2x $100 gift cards
- 2x $50 gift cards
to any of the ten restaurants featured on this blog post (your choice if you win!) courtesy of Alberta Chicken Producers. Giveaway running until December 6, 2020. Enjoy your chicken!
10 Delicious Chicken Dishes to Try in Calgary
okay maybe I included a few different chicken options per place so 10+ chicken dishes to try lol
1. Lil Cluckers Fried Chicken Sandwich from Cluck and Cleaver
If you’re looking for chicken in Calgary, Cluck and Cleaver is likely top of the list. Everything is made in-house, from scratch, using whole, all-natural ingredients and no preservatives. Cluck and Cleaver’s Canadian chicken is 100% antibiotic free, certified humane, Halal birds. Their most popular chicken dish—the crispy fried 1/4 pound Lil Clucker sandwich. Get that, or perhaps the “motha cluckin’ hot” sandwich, or. their rotisserie chicken or. chicken tenders. You’ve got a lot of chicken options here because well, that’s their bread and butter. Or bread and chicken. Cluck yeah!
Cluck and Cleaver is located at 1511 14 St SW, Calgary, AB.
2. Chicken and Waffles at The Bro’kin Yolk
I’m a big fan of The Brok’in Yolk, a Filipino/Canadian all day brunch spot located in several ‘burbs in Calgary co-owned by the Bro(s) Jeff and Gil Carlos. If you’re not going for their more Filipino-inspired breakfast bowls, then you’ve got to order Chicken & Waffles, featuring housemade Belgian waffles topped with sous vide, then spiced, fried, dark meat Canadian chicken with maple syrup, maple honey hot sauce and white chicken gravy. I too, am salivating!
The Brok’in Yolk has several locations including Creekside (#130 12580 Symons Valley Rd.), Mahogany (1410 7 Mahogany Plaza), or Signal Hill (5691 Signall Hill Centre), Calgary, AB.
3. Happy Chicken (Rotisserie Chicken) at NOtaBLE
NOtABLE in Calgary is well-known for their “Happy Chickens”—wood fire rotisserie chickens that are raised free-run. These chickens (raised in Canada) are juicy and delicious—”the one you know and love.” Get it as part of their dinner which comes with mashed potatoes and vegetables, or add your own sides separately.
NOtaBLE is located at #133 4611 Bowness Rd., Calgary, AB.
4. Jamaican Jerk Chicken at Simply Irie
Chicken can be so versatile. So while you might be used to the more common fried chicken preparation, why not push the flavour boundaries and go for some Caribbean style chicken from Simply Irie Caribbean Cuisine. You’ve got a few options here! Simply Irie’s Canadian Halal chicken can be found in patty form, as a stew, Jerk Wings or the very popular Jerk Chicken!
Simply Irie is located at 1510 6 St. SW, Calgary, AB.
5. Roast Chicken at Ten Foot Henry
Ten Foot Henry is one of my favourite Calgary restaurants and one that gets me excited about eating vegetables, lol. This restaurant has a “vegetable-anchored menu”—so the veggies are the star and you may also add some proteins to complement your vegetables. Might I suggest the Roast Chicken? It’s sourced from Alberta and B.C. and comes with basil, walnut, au jus, and cannellini puree. Perfection!
Ten Foot Henry is located at 1209 1 St. Calgary, AB.
6. JAPA Karaage Curry Ramen at Redheads Japa Cafe
Redheads Japa Cafe first caught my attention because they served my beloved spam musubi. Then I discovered their spam and egg JAPA rice burgers—amazing. But they also serve a pretty unique ramen—their JAPA Karaage Curry Ramen, a spicy curry soup topped with fried Canadian chicken. Give that specialty dish a try (and be sure to grab some spam musubis to go lol).
Redheads Japa Cafe is located at 638 11 Ave, Calgary, AB.

7. Chicken Strips and Fried Chicken at Chicken on the Way
Chicken on the Way is a Calgary institution! It’s been a staple providing Alberta chicken (from Okotoks) since the 1950s and is still owned by the original family that first started it. Pretty neat, hey? Satisfy your chicken craving with Chicken on the Way’s fried chicken or chicken strips. Both are hand-breaded in-store and the chicken strips are also hand-cut with 100% breast meat—no fillers!
Chicken on the Way has several locations across Calgary, AB.
8. Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli, Curry, or Pho Ga (Chicken) at Pho Dau Bo
There’s some fantastic Vietnamese dishes (chicken and otherwise) at Pho Dau Bo. Another family-run operation, this restaurant has been serving Calgarians since 2008 and is well-known for spicy sate pho, bun vermicellis, Vietnamese subs and tuy xuong nuong (roasted bone marrow!) For my chicken lovers, try Pho Dau Bo’s lemongrass chicken vermicelli, Vietnamese chicken curry or pho ga (chicken noodle soup!) Their chicken is sourced from Lethbridge, Alberta!
Pho Dau Bo is located at #110 4909 17 Ave, Calgary, AB.
9. Spatchcock Chicken at Gringo Street
If you’re craving chicken with a latin flair, might I suggest a stop at Gringo Street for their Spatchcock Canadian chicken. This main meal comes with cabbage slaw, a trio of salsas—roja, verde, and arriera, plus warm tortillas. One of Gringo Street’s specialty street food dishes and a must-chicken-try is their Chicken Anticuchos: grilled Peruvian street skewers (the chicken is Aji Amarillo marinated) that also comes with crispy baby potatoes or a side salad.
Gringo Street is located at #101 524 17 Ave, Calgary, AB.
10. Chicken Chimichurri Sandwich at Charbar
And did I save the best for last? Well, they’re all the best, so technically no but technically yes? lol. I’ve never met a chimichurri dish I didn’t like, how about you? I think then that you’d be a big fan of the Chicken Chimichurri Sandwich at Charbar, located in the beautiful Simmons Building in East Village, Calgary. Woodfire is an essential part of an Argentinian barbeque, which is Charbar’s specialty. Their delicious Canadian chicken is cooked over 900F hardwood coals and fire, served with melted mozza on a fresh baked bread, with your choice of fries, salad, or soup. If you’re reading this during warmer months, you’ve got to grab a seat at their amazing rooftop patio overlooking the city skyline AND river too!
Charbar is located at Simmons Building 618 Confluence Way, Calgary, AB.
