Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- YouTube plans on hiring Hollywood pros to compete with Netflix and Amazon. Interesting… but I will always think of YouTube as more of a playground for shaky cam, annoyingly vertical, average Joe type videos (for the most part lol)
- Yo. Emoj.li and the rise of the ‘Gimmick’ social network.
- I don’t use Foursquare but if you do, here are uses for Foursquare that you’ve never considered!
- There’s a new app for famous people only. Learn more about Facebook Mentions.
- Google is apologizing for its real name rule, and dropping restrictions on what name you can use on Google+/YouTube.
- I’ve used this feature twice – but I guess it’s more popular than you think. Instagram Direct messaging feature has 45 million users.
- Twitter has announced plans to improve its Direct Messages, so users can view their entire direct message history on mobile. They will also streamline process of deleting direct messages. Finally~
- Wouldn’t have been my guess for first law enforcement agency on Snapchat but police in the UK is now using Snapchat. They say this enables locals to keep up with its activities.
- Facebook is testing a new ‘Buy’ button that lets you purchase items without leaving the social network.
- Facebook’s plan for free Wi-Fi for all takes a step forward! Facebook is offering high school students free Wi-Fi as part of a pilot program.
- Some interesting stats on Vine, including that it would take eight years to watch a Vine video from every single user.
- Good idea/bad idea? A Washington DC sidewalk gets a ‘No Cell Phones’ walking lane as part of an upcoming TV show.
- Devoted to your phone: A woman chooses to be shot rather than giving up her Samsung during a mugging.
- Did you see the Edmonton International Airport is testing out customer service robots? #SkyNet. lol
