Things to Do This Week
Experience the Edmonton Music & Speech Arts Festival (various locations)
The 116th Annual Edmonton Music & Speech Arts Festival kicks off this week and runs until May 1, featuring more than 20,000 music students, actors, musicians, and music lovers. Performances are FREE to attend! Choirs run this week. Bands run next week. Solo Festival runs this Saturday to May 1.
Watch a few local live theatre performances:
On for the next week only April 17-27 is The Swearing Jar at the Walterdale Theatre, part of their 65th season! The show is about a “young married couple who decide to kick their hilariously bad swearing habit before their baby is born, but that’s not their only obstacle.”
My friend Pam highly recommends you check out the final week of The Mountaintop at The Citadel Theatre, a reimagining of the night before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Daily shows until Sunday, April 21.
The Stage Struck! One Act Festival takes place at Gateway Theatre this Friday & Saturday April 19 & 20 with nine plays, including six new works by local playwrights, two previously produced works and a staged reading.
Shop a few local markets:
Hello Pretty is throwing their two-year birthday bash this April 20 & 21.
Malla Mrkt’s Taylor Swift-themed market is also this April 20 & 21.
The Mill Woods Seniors Association is hosting their MWSA Spring 2024 Rummage Sale this April 20 & 21 (everything half price on Sunday)!
Participate in Earth Day!
You can really do any number of activities for Earth Day this Monday, April 22—picking up some trash in your neighbourhood, choosing to bring a reusable item for your outing, planting a seed, watering plants, you name it! But there is an Earth Day Expo happening this Saturday, April 20 at the Edmonton Reuse Centre where you’re invited to check out a Wasteless Market and find unique items made by local vendors using reusable materials. Also a good time to see if you want to drop your own items off at the Reuse Centre
Take part in a unique singles dating event (ICE District, 10360 102 St.)
For my singles Age 25-43—ICE District downtown is host to the World’s first Live-Matched Singles Games Night this Saturday, April 20!
Create a cat-friendly gardening space (Salisbury Greenhouse, Sherwood Park)
Salisbury Greenhouse is hosting a Cat Gardens workshop fundraiser in support of Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCARS) this Saturday, April 20!
Here’s a few family-friendly activities:
You might want to check out the Wild Rose Shows Spruce Grove Fundraiser this weekend April 19 & 21 and next weekend—featuring amusement park rides and other family friendly activities.
Musical Mornings a Concert for Ages 1-5 is on this weekend April 21 at the Winspear Centre.
And here’s my early pick for NEXT weekend:
Plan to partake in the Edmonton Independent Bookstore Day Extravaganza! running April 27 & 28 featuring 11 indie shops and a fun passport experience.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
