Food to Try This Week
Go on a self-guided Chinatown food crawl! (various locations)
My favourite Chinatown experience is visiting multiple spots in self-guided food crawls. This week I visited three spots for take-out: A Cold Cut Combo Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwich from Nhon Hoa, Lunchbox Meat on Rice from Barbecue King City, and Fried Macaroni with Pickled Veg / Minced Pork + Minced Pork Vermicelli Soup from Gui Lin Noodle House. 10/10!
Get delicious Thai cuisine from Siam Thai Kitchen (242 Mistatim Rd.)
I had such an amazing lunch from Siam Thai Kitchen (their St. Albert Trail location—but they also have a spot on 15883 116 Ave.) if you go between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. they offer lunch specials. I loved my Drunken Mama Noodles, their Sweet Roti Dessert and Housemade Chili Oil! The St. Albert Trail location is newer and nicer/brighter but the OG is a lovely experience too.
Support Sheng’s Tea Bubble Tea (10048 82 Ave.)
Sheng’s Tea is a local, family-owned bubble tea shop on Whyte Ave. (but East of the Tracks—which tends to be less busy!) who reached out to ask if I could spread the word about their drinks! It’s a cute space with It’s a cute space with a great selection of milk teas, fruit teas, slush, cheesy milk foams, brown sugar drinks, and more. I haven’t been in awhile but I’m hoping to get back ASAP—hopefully you can go support them too.
Check out Urban Plant Cafe (9261 34 Ave.)
This week Diane recommends you try Urban Plant Cafe a cafe with a lot of plants (as the name suggests lol). From Diane:
“Their pastries are nice I have been getting Too Good to Go bags from them and almost everything is pretty good. They also have this chicken salad sandwich we got once and love and they also do bingsu.”

Bloom Cookie Co. is now open seven days a week! Along with their egg, dairy and nut-free cookies, they also do soft serve, have outdoor seating, and you can pick up a loyalty card. Pop in and grab some treats order online.

From the Blog Vault
During April of last year, Mike and I were so thrilled to introduce our Miracle Baby Benjimin, fittingly the announcement / blog post came out around the same time as Canadian Fertility Awareness Week—which this year occurs April 21-27, 2024.
I remember going through the last decade trying to conceive feeling surprised and upset whenever someone who had kids revealed privately to me that they had also struggled to conceive. Because they had never talked about that before. I mean for most that was simply because they didn’t talk about infertility at all.
But to me, in the throws of infertility, it sort of felt disingenuous. Look at all of these families who struggled to conceive but didn’t share or say it was a struggle. That silence is what makes struggling with infertility extra hard—because you feel like you’ve done something wrong or that something is wrong with you because you don’t think or realize that so many others in your life, in your community, in your network, have also struggled (because they don’t talk about it!)
Anyway I thought it was a fitting reflection ahead of CFAW.
There are a few local events happening this CFAW (hosted by some great local clinics—Whole Family Health and Alberta Reproductive Centre) that perhaps you may consider sharing—even if you aren’t aware of someone dealing with infertility in your life, the chance that there is, is very high (1 in 6 Canadian couples have infertility).
