Get tickets to Little Shop of Horrors at the Citadel Theatre (9828 101A Ave.)
Little Shop of Horrors opens at the Citadel Theatre starting this weekend Oct. 21 and running until Nov 19. It’s a sci-fi comedy musical about “the meek and bumbling assistant of a struggling floral shop who happens upon a strange new plant that causes business to boom. But when the plant starts to speak, promising fame and fortune, he finds the plant also develops an unquenchable thirst for human blood.” This is one of the longest running Off-Broadway shows! Plan to check it out for its one-month run here. I’ll be partnering with the Citadel Theatre on a ticket giveaway in early November.
The Salisbury Greenhouse is also doing some FREE Little Shop of Horrors / Halloween-themed activities this weekend Oct. 21 & 22.
Check out James & The Giant Peach on stage (4308 50. St., Leduc)
Stageworks is bringing James and the Giant Peach to Maclab Centre for Performing Arts in Leduc from Oct. 19-21. Watch “the hilarious, nonsensical fantasy of James Trotter” come to life on stage! “Along his unbelievable journey across the Atlantic Ocean, James discovers the meaning of true courage and friendship from his new friends—mystical, life-sized garden bugs he meets in the peach.”
Shop some local markets happening this weekend:
My friend Sharman is organizing the Shamrock It & Wear It Vintage Market at the Shamrock Curling Club on Sunday, Oct. 22 from Noon to 5 p.m. “Shop sustainable fashions, glam up for sweater weather, or snag a fun & fabulous look for Halloween.”
The Alt After Dark group are doing Halloween-themed Night Markets this Friday, Oct. 20 and next.
The Hazeldean Artisan Market is organizing a Halloween Market this Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The “Shakers and Makers Market” is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. showcasing “the talents of Grandmothers and Friends, offering a wide array of hand made items. We offer beautifully hand knit and crocheted toques, mitts, and scarves, hand sewn and quilted items, original works of art, Christmas items, items that are earth-friendly as well as jams, jellies, preserves and home baking.”
Try chicken yoga??? lol (53044 Range Road 213 Ardrossan, AB)
This might be gross as I’ve been informed that chickens kind of poop a lot (lol) but this is the first time I’ve ever seen a Chicken-themed “Yoga” offering in the Edmonton area by Dreamcatcher Nature Assisted Therapy. This is an all-ages event happening Saturday, Oct. 21 afternoon. (I put yoga in quotations as I’ve learned over the years that these type of animal classes aren’t really true yoga classes as you end up taking photos / video of the animals in the class more than doing actual yoga moves lol).
Check out ‘The Mountains are Calling’ at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery!
I’m doing some work with the Spruce Grove Art Gallery so it’s been fun to be exposed to some awesome local artwork. Currently there is an exhibit “The Mountains are Calling” on at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery until Oct. 27 featuring mountain landscapes from local artist Samantha Williams-Chapelsky! She’s a lovely artist and so talented. Check it out (35 5 Ave., SG)

Food to Try This Week
Experience Kaiseki Japanese food boxes at Nomiya Ellerslie (11160 Ellerslie Rd.)
Nomiya Ellerslie is now offering Kaiseki—a chef choice curated, Japanese culinary boxes featuring 9 items “with each element, a piece of art, designed to harmonize with the next, creating a culinary journey like no other.” $45—pre-order to dine-in available Fri/Sat/Suns. I hope to try soon!
Have some Venezuelan arepas from Avila Arepa (10760 82 Ave.)
Venezuelan restaurant Avila Arepa on Whyte Ave. had their glass smashed last week. :( Consider supporting them this week! Their gluten-free arepas (delicious corn-based open-faced sandwich / bun with various fillings) are awesome! I also love the mini arepitas with garlic dip.
Check out The Art of Charcuterie’s new location (7345 104 St.)
The Art of Charcuterie has a new location inside Modest Meats at 7345 104 St. They do some amazing charcuterie boxes, boards and trays. Pre-order and pick up to welcome to their new south Edmonton space!
Grab some brews at Irrational Brewing Company (10643 124 St.)
I was invited to a party at Irrational Brewing Company this week (they’re now renting out their Sub Room space for events!) where I learned that this is a woman-owned and powered brewery (cool!), also the 2022 Alberta New Brewery of the Year, located in a cool historic building (a 1930s power substation)—with great beer! I thought the German Pseudo-Pils was pretty good (admittedly I am not a super beer person lol but my friend Scott—who wrote a book about Alberta beer—also really likes this brewery!) Message Scott on Instagram if you want to buy a copy of his book, lol.
Get your holiday advent orders in (already?!)
I feel like these advent calendars get released earlier and earlier each year lol but for good reason—they always sell out! JACEK Chocolate Advent Calendar is available for pre-order now (it’s their 10th anniversary edition and they *will* sell out). And the Evoolution 2023 Advent Calendar is also taking pre-orders! You can check my old blog post to see if spots that made calendars last year are releasing yet this year too (post not updated for 2023).
