Things to Do This Week
Get spooked at Fort Edmonton Park’s DARK (7000 143 St.)
DARK, Fort Edmonton Parks’s most thrilling and chilling experience, returns for the Halloween season this weekend Oct. 6-29. “Survive a horde of undead in a defenceless frontier town. Escape the deranged killer clown whose grand gesture is murder. Dare to discover what nightmares are made during the witching hour. Come for the scares, stay for the food and the fun.”
Check out Bear Grease the Musical (8700 – 84 St. Fort Saskatchewan, AB)
I was super excited to see that Bear Grease the Indigenous twist on the musical Grease is on at the Dow Centennial Centre Shell Theatre this weekend Saturday, Oct. 7. Go Grease Lighting! This ‘Indigenized Musical Theatre’ features an all Indigenous cast, and the production itself originated from Edmonton. I was lucky I got to see it back in 2021 in Edmonton.
Attend the popular Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair (Smoky Lake, AB)
The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair returns for four days of fun this weekend including the Great White North Pumpkin Weigh-off. There a ton of family-friendly activities in the town located about 1.5 hours north east of Edmonton. Go East of Edmonton has a good breakdown of all the events happening!
Experience Elk Island National Park’s Gateway to the Stars (Elk Island, AB)
Elk Island National Park’s Gateway to the Stars dark sky experiences return Fridays and Saturdays throughout October starting this weekend. “In the heart of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, escape the city to gaze upon the countless stars and learn to navigate from one constellation to the next.” You need to register to attend this event.
Check out Edmonton’s newest River Valley Park (903 153 Ave.)
Edmonton’s newest river valley park, aptly named the Northeast River Valley Park, is officially open! It features covered barn bridges, a lake for non-motorized boating activities, playgrounds, walking trails and more.
Attend 2SLGBTQQIA+ History Month at the Royal Alberta Museum
The Royal Alberta Museum is hosting a few events this October for 2SLGBTQQIA+ History Month including an Edmonton 2 Spirit Society Ceremony & Performances on Oct. 5, Pride in Science on Oct. 26, Beyond Binary in Nature (guided tour on select dates), and a 2SLGBTQQIA+ Film Series on select dates. Also did you know they do Late Night Thursdays.
Go on a guided tour of Edmonton’s Chinatown (various locations)
The Chinatown Benevolent Association Youth Council and U of A Chinese Cultural Society are hosting a FREE guided tour of Edmonton Chinatown this Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will start in Chinatown South and work up to Chinatown North (where you can then plan to have lunch in Chinatown!) From the organizers: “Chinatown is a mystery to some, and can feel intimidating to others. The neighbourhood has gone through several phases of relocation and transition. In spite of these upheavals and changes, the community of Chinatown is still strong… learn about the cultural and heritage history of the area.”
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Check out the new LUNCH menu at The Common (9910 109 St.)
The Common is now offering weekday lunch! They are open every Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. for lunch. Check out the menu and plan a visit.
Grab one more meal at Shojo Izakaya (10425 121 St.)
One of my favourite restaurants—Shojo Izakaya—is closing. 😭 Their last day is Saturday, Oct. 7 and while they’re fully booked with resos since they announced the closure, they are keeping 20% of seats open for walk-ins including patio spots (weather permitting).
Check out the Nudoru Ramen pop-up at Yutaka (10532 82 Ave.)
Nudoru Ramen is serving ramen bowls out of Yutaka Japanese Bistro & Bar throughout October (Monday to Saturday 5 p.m. to sold out) including customizable ramen bowls and some of their more popular items.
Order up a Family Platter from Jerusalem Shawarma (various locations)
We ordered the BBQ Family Platter and Shawarma Family Platters from Jerusalem Shawarma last week to celebrate friends’ housewarming and it was so good! They do great food at good prices and huge portions. And there are lots of locations to choose from. This restaurant originated from Calgary and I think are finding Edmontonians are big fans!
