Fall Comfort Food Favourites at The Rec Room

The leaves are changing colours. The days are getting shorter. You’re pulling out sweaters and jackets, it’s time for the coziest season of the year: Fall! And with it, comes comforting, warming, fall foods. Amirite?

Until October 31, 2019, The Rec Room is offering a limited-time Fall Plates & Pairings Menu to celebrate the season! I’ve teamed up with The Rec Room to highlight the new menu and give away a $100 gift card so you can get delicious fall comfort food in your bellies!

Your fall plates and pairing options at The Rec Room include:

  • Bratwurst Poutine
    (with pork sausage, sauerkraut, braised red cabbage, cheese curds and black pepper gravy – $11)
    Pair with Mill Street Cobblestone Stout (473 ml) – $9.5
  • Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich
    (with pretzel crusted chicken breast, sauerkraut, honey mustard aioli on a soft pretzel bun – $14)
    Pair with Mill Street 100th Meridian Amber Lager (355 ml) – $7.5 
  • Chicken Schnitzel Dinner
    (with panko-crusted chicken breast, white wine caper sauce, mashed potatoes, braised red cabbage and lemon dill – $17)
    Pair with Hoegaarden (330 ml) – $8 
  • Apple Strudel Sundae (with braised fuji apples, graham streusel, vanilla ice cream and a crispy pie pastry – $8)
    Pair with Pair with Red Rocket (1.5 oz) Crown Royal Apple, lemon juice, cranberry and ginger beer – $10 or
    The Decider (1.5 oz) Bulleit Bourbon, Lemon Juice and Apple Cider – $10 

The menu very much has a German-themed, Oktoberfest-vibe, with its schnitzel and sauerkraut. I think it’s delicious, comforting and filling! The Rec Room also likes to create limited time menus to make sure their culinary offerings are refreshed and who doesn’t love celebrating seasonal flavours?

Schnitzel and sauerkraut—delicious!

When I went for a fall plates and pairings tasting at The Rec Room West Edmonton Mall with my friend Diane for her birthday, we were both really happy with the poutine (the sauerkraut with braised red cabbage adds such a nice sour and sweet combination with the gravy). The chicken schnitzel dinner was the stand-out for both of us—great breading on the chicken, love the sharpness that the white wine caper sauce adds to the dish, and the lemon dill deliciously lightens up what is otherwise a pretty heavy, hearty dish. I liked the pretzel-crusted chicken breast and honey mustard aioli in the chicken schnitzel sandwich but if you had to pick between the schnitzel dishes, the schnitzel with mashed potatoes is definitely heartier and more flavourful. (Don’t worry if it’s lunch and the dish is called dinner. It’s definitely also available at lunch. lol) Finally, the apple strudel sundae with apple Crown Royal cocktail was the perfect way to end the fall-themed outing. Before we knew it we had devoured the entire dessert despite being full from the main meal—oops!

I love working with The Rec Room! Particularly the West Edmonton Mall location (more conveniently located for us lol). It’s genuinely a place Mike and I like to hang out for the fun games and entertainment, trivia nights, and of course, food! (The unlimited popcorn is also a great perk lol).
