Ten Delicious Chicken Dishes to Try in Edmonton

Who loves chicken? Whether cooking at home or ordering out, I love me a good chicken dish, which is why I’m excited to partner with Alberta Chicken Producers to share some useful chicken content for you over the next few months!

First of all: did you know that in Canada, if you buy chicken fresh never frozen, that means the chicken came from a Canadian farm? Buying fresh never frozen is one easy way to identify Canadian chicken! (There are frozen products that are Canadian too but buying fresh, never frozen is just one easy way to identify Canadian chicken!) That means most restaurants in town are also serving Canadian chicken.

If you’re shopping at Freson Bros., an Alberta-owned grocer, you can also look for the ‘Alberta Chicken’ brand! Freson Bros. has locations across the province including around Edmonton in Stony Plain and Fort Saskatchewan (an Edmonton location is opening soon!) But also keep an eye out for the ‘Raised by a Canadian Chicken Farmer‘ red chicken logo to know it’s Canadian chicken!

Stay tuned for more local chicken mythbusting, but in the meantime I’ve rounded up some delicious chicken dishes you should try at ten Edmonton restaurants. There’s quite a range here, something for everyone—and just goes to show how versatile chicken is too!! Pick-up / take-out or dine-in (for some places, call or message to see if they’re open). As always, I’m excited to highlight some amazing local businesses in the city that could certainly use your support.

Keep scrollin’ and you’ll also get details on how to enter to WIN a $100 gift card to one of these ten restaurants (your choice if you win!) courtesy of Alberta Chicken Producers.

(Giveaway running until July 21, 2020).

Enjoy your chicken!

1. Chicken Katsu Curry from Kazoku Ramen

Mike’s favourite place for ramen in Edmonton—Kazoku Ramen—is also home to one of the tastiest chicken karrages (Japanese deep fried chicken) and my favourite Chicken Katsu Curry rice! Curry is a popular Japanese dish that usually comes with a fried chicken or pork cutlet over rice, an omelette & salad. (They also have shrimp and potato croquette options but this is a chicken blog post so—get the chicken! lol. I always do). If you order the chicken karaage to start, be sure to get it with the spicy mayo!

Kazoku Ramen is located at 16518 100 Ave. and is open for dine-in and take-out.

2. Fried Chicken Poutine from The Local Omnivore

The Local Omnivore has one of the best poutines in the city (it’s “pirate spiced!”) Add fried chicken on it and you’ve got a winning chicken dish! The Fried Chicken Poutine comes with their classic pirate spice fries with charred corn, fried chicken tenders, and a fried egg! The oozier the better. They’ve actually got a few chicken options for you like the Wicked Spicy Chicken or CBS fried tenders with black pepper mayo.

The Local Omnivore is located at 10933 120 St. and is open for take-out and delivery.

3. Classic Chicken Adobo from Filistix

Adobo is the national dish of the Philippines, and you can have the most popular adobo—chicken—right here in Edmonton from Filistix. Their Classic Chicken Adobo featured braised chicken in a tangy and savoury Filipino adobo sauce of soy, vinegar and garlic. Delicious!

Filistix is located at 10621 100 Ave. and is open for dine-in, take-out and delivery.

4. Fried Chicken from Northern Chicken and Seoul Fried Chicken

A craving for fried chicken is fully satisfied with an order from Northern Chicken or Seoul Fried Chicken.

I didn’t want to do two entries about fried chicken so they are being discussed two in one here, lol.

Northern Chicken’s famous Southern Fried Chicken comes in original, Nashville Hot, Nashville Extra Hot, Nashville WNFA (We’re Not F*cking Around lol), and Mustard. Comes with coleslaw or can be subbed with another tasty side (I recommend the Doritos Mac N Cheese).

Northern Chicken is located at 10704 124 St. and is open for take-out and delivery.

Seoul Fried Chicken is a Korean fried chicken joint that serves an incredible 5 pc chicken lunch set with two sides (get the unbelievable Pesto Mac N Cheese) that is an Edmonton favourite. My go-to chicken flavour is Garlic Soy! And even though it’s not chicken, I would seriously buy buckets of that Pesto Mac N Cheese.

Seoul Fried Chicken is located at 7904B 104 St. and is open for pick-up or delivery.

5. Pan Roasted Chicken from Workshop Eatery

For a very comforting chicken dish, try the Pan Roasted Chicken from Workshop Eatery. It features a Morinville Colony chicken breast (not just Canadian chicken—ALBERTA chicken!), and the sides change out depending on the season. As of this post, the roasted chicken comes with morel mushroom risotto (YUM!), buttered asparagus, and a grainy mustard velouté (a white French sauce of flour and fat (‘roux’) and stock).

Workshop Eatery is located at 2003 91 St. and is open for take-out and delivery.

6. Butter (or other) Chicken from Tiffin Fresh Kitchen

Visit Tiffin Fresh Kitchen, a fast-casual, authentic, Indian restaurant with multiple locations around the city, serving up a bunch of different, flavourful chicken dishes including the very popular Butter Chicken. Feeling more adventurous? Try the Fenugreek Chicken, Unni’s South Indian Chicken or the Chicken Vindaloo (it spicy!) Throw in a chicken samosa while you’re at it, and a chicken naan! Just kidding there isn’t a thing as a chicken naan (wait maybe there should be though lol) but we always get garlic naan when we pick up Tiffin Fresh!

Tiffin Fresh Kitchen is located at 5135 Ellerslie Rd., 6089 Currents Drive, or 10404 Jasper Ave. and is open for dine-in, take-out and delivery.

7. Doro Tibs (Chicken) from Awash Ethiopian Restaurant

Oh my god I can’t recommend the Doro Tibs dish from Awash Ethiopian Restaurant enough!! The Doro Tibs featured diced, marinated chicken breast with onions, green pepper and hot Ethiopian spices and herbs. It comes with vegetables and rice or injera (a sour fermented flatbread that is Ethiopia’s national dish). And it is SO GOOD!

Awash Ethiopian Restaurant is located at 12952 118 Ave. and is open for take-out or delivery.

8. Grilled Piri Piri from Bodega

There’s a lot to love at Bodega, which specializes in Spanish tapas (and wine!) The Piri Piri Chicken is mouthwatering. Get it as a hot tapas that comes with shoestring potatoes and spicy pimento aioli (like, you’ll want to lick the plate clean of that aioli lol) or get it in a tasty sandwich! While you’re there, please also order the braised boar cheeks!!! Okay and the empanadillas (there’s a chicken one!)

Bodega is located at 10220 103 St., 6509 112 Ave., and 12417 Stony Plain Road, and is open for dine-in, take-out and delivery.

9. ‘The Famous Calle Mexico Tostadas’ from Calle Mexico

I’m a big fan of Mexican cuisine from Calle Mexico and they’ve got a few chicken options for you! Get their Chicken (Tinga) Tacos (chicken breast marinated in chipotle sauce, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, radish, sour cream, and be sure to add their housemade sauces too!!), or slurp up their Classic Chicken Tortilla Soup (so good!), or order the “Famous Calle Mexico Tostados”—three crispy tortillas topped with beans, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, radish, sour cream, feta cheese and avocados. I often order the tostadas and soup!

Calle Mexico is located at 11127 107 Ave., 7704 104 St., in West Edmonton Mall at 8882 170 St., or all over the city via their food truck! They are open for dine-in, take-out and delivery (some locations).

10. Chicken Pot Pie from Meat Street Pies

Are you a savoury pie person or a sweet pie person? I’m all about the savoury, so Meat Street Pies is one of my favourite food trucks in the city. When we visit this food truck we usually get a tourtiere, steak/cheese, or Chicken Pot Pie! Visit these purveyors (what a great word) of savoury pies and ENJOY!

Meat Street Pies is located at the Downtown Edmonton City Market or in Sherwood Park at 800 Broadmoor Blvd.
