On the search for halal food in Edmonton…
Hello, my name is Imran! You may know me as “YEG Halal Foodie” on social media.
As someone who follows a Halal diet, I used to find it challenging to discover reliable Halal dining options in Edmonton—especially those beyond the usual donair shops, pizza joints, or South Asian restaurants. Finding new spots often meant asking friends or coworkers for recommendations.
That need for a centralized source of information led me to create the Facebook group: “Edmonton Halal Restaurants – YEG Halal Foodie.” The goal was simple: provide a space for people to share reviews, ask for recommendations, and for local businesses to promote their Halal offerings. Feel free to join our Facebook group for community reviews, recommendations, and to share your own finds!
In the early days, membership was limited, so I began publishing reviews and highlighting Halal-friendly spots myself through my social media platforms under @YEGHalalFoodie on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
The response was incredible, and what started as a small effort has since grown into a trusted resource for Edmonton’s Halal food scene!
More Than Just Food: A Celebration of Culture and Community
This project started as a way to help friends and family discover quality Halal eats, but it has evolved into something more meaningful—a platform that showcases underrepresented restaurants, celebrates Edmonton’s cultural diversity, and supports local businesses.
Whether you’re a Muslim seeking Halal options, a host accommodating Halal guests, or simply a curious foodie, this guide offers something for everyone.
– Imran, @YEGHalalFoodie
What is Halal Food?
Halal, meaning “permissible” in Arabic, refers to dietary practices in Islam. Halal guidelines include specific methods of animal slaughter (zabiha or hand-slaughtered is often preferred) and prohibit the consumption of pork and alcohol. The good news? Edmonton is home to a growing number of Halal-certified restaurants serving everything from South Asian and Middle Eastern dishes to Korean fried chicken, burgers, pizzas, desserts, and more—all prepared in accordance with Halal dietary laws.
