If you’re looking for some Alberta adventure inspiration for autumn, you’ve come to the right blog!
I’m always in search of fun experiences in all corners of the province, and have found myself driving up to check out the beautiful Mighty Peace Region of northern Alberta a bunch of times over the last few years. There’s more to Alberta than the incredible Canadian Rockies and I hope my travel guides like this helps give you the nudge and ideas you need to consider a different AB travel destination.
I’m proud to partner with Mighty Peace Tourism to share some of the many ways you can experience this beautiful region! (#MightyPeace_Partner)
The Mighty Peace Region in north west Alberta is so quiet, so peaceful and so beautiful! From forests and lakes to valleys and the many rivers that make up the region, you’ll find a ton of natural beauty, big open sky and spaces, small town charm, and incredibly welcoming people up in this north west Alberta area. It’s truly an underrated space to play in the province.
The Mighty Peace Region is located approximately 5-5.5-hours drive north west of Edmonton (depending on which area you choose to explore first, as the region is comprised of multiple towns and communities), or two hours drive north east from Grande Prairie.
Over the last few years they’ve been working hard to highlight the area as a tourism destination in the province and I do think you should consider it on your Alberta adventure planning!

Below I’m sharing a look at my autumn adventure in the Mighty Peace Region—with a breakdown of where we ate and what we did—including the most scenic spots to take in all the fall foliage in the region!
Depending on when you read this, really, no matter what season you’re exploring, you can always plan something fun in the Mighty Peace Region! Along with this fall-focused guide, be sure to check my previous Mighty Peace Region Travel Guides to plan your trip!

Where to Find Scenic Viewpoints / Easy Hikes, Trails, Lakes, Rivers, and Outdoor Experiences in the Mighty Peace Region

Dunvegan Overlook Trail (near Fairview, Alberta)
Location: Park at Dunvegan Provincial Park, Township Rd 801A, Dunvegan, AB T0H 1L0, Canada | Website
If you’d love a unique view of the mighty Peace River and the region’s iconic suspension bridge—the Dunvegan Bridge—then hiking the short but steep Dunvegan Overlook Trail might be for you!
Located at the Historic Dunvegan Provincial Park, this trail gives you some excellent views of Alberta’s largest and longest suspension bridge, and the fourth largest in Canada!!
It’s a 1.4 km out-and-back journey that rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views of the Dunvegan Bridge, the surrounding rolling hills, and the mighty Peace River below.

We did half of this hike lol. It starts getting pretty steep part-way up and I wasn’t feeling confident in the shoes I chose to wear lol, and we had multiple stops to get to still on our jampacked Mighty Peace Region itinerary, so we found a spot mid-way up that still afforded us some fairly scenic aerial-ish views! If you are more flexible with timing, and come with more clothing/gear-prepared for the climb/hike, I think you’ll be fine lol.
We know that families with children hike this trail regularly so not to say it’s not for the faint of heart lol but definitely be aware that it is a pretty steep hike/climb up, and you should fully be prepared to crawl and get your hands or knees a bit dirty making your way up and down. And also watch for little cacti that might prick you depending on how you’re climbing up or shuffling down! I would not classify it as a particularly challenging hike but the steepness adds an extra layer of caution that should be considered as you make your way up and down.

Dunvegan Provincial Park was a really lovely spot to see all the different autumn hues in particular, during our fall visit—both from above and from the ground—there’s plenty of vantage points and you can get right up close to the river and under the bridge too depending on how much time you want to spend in the area.
Directions: As you enter the provincial park, stay right and drive under the Dunvegan Bridge. There is a well marked parking lot 200 meters after the bridge. There are also washrooms at the parking lot. The trail starts as you walk north towards the bluff, the first 300m are flat, the rest inclines up.

Downtown Mural Tour (Peace River, Alberta)
If you want to explore some public art and murals right in the Town of Peace River, here’s a few suggestions:
- The Peace River Art Hub, located at 10018 101 St, Peace River, AB T8S 2A5, Canada, offers art classes and events for all ages and ability levels! Whether you’re an artist or an art lover, you might want to check out the Art Hub’s exhibitions, workshops, and events depending on what time of year you visit, or be sure to walk all around the building (including the back alleys!) to admire and take photos with some beautiful murals on site.
- On this visit, we loved seeing some of the newest murals in town added to the walls outside the Art Hub, by local artists including Breanna Lewis,, Lana and Elizabeth Vassallo, Korrie Dawn Lablonski, and Nikki Gour. Really beautiful works and big enough so they can fill your whole camera frame if you snap a photo in front of it (which is my preference for what I consider Instagrammable Walls lol).
- You may also want to check out a piece called “New Beginnings” by Dave Thomas of Flying Colours on the side of Peace Country Hearing Care. You’ll notice a few “portraits” depicting different Peace River people and scenes across from Riverfront Park. There’s some really nice Utility Box artwork all around town. Find Canadian geese by Andrew Olivier on the side of the Great Canadian Dollar Store and some animals involved in the brewing process by Shannon Brown on the side of the old Peace River Brewing building—and more!

Figure Eight Lake Provincial Recreation Area (near Grimshaw, Alberta)
Location: | Website
Figure Eight Lake Provincial Recreation Area is a beautiful place to spend some time outdoors in north west Alberta. Located just a few minutes drive from Grimshaw, Alberta, Figure Eight Lake is named from the shape it had before 1970 when water levels were lower.
In those earlier days, the lake had two basins and resembled a figure eight. Today, the water levels are much higher and you can plan to do any number of water activities on the lake, with its convenient boat dock, bring or rent a canoe, kayak, paddle board, boat, go fishing, hiking, swimming, and more!
There are picnic tables, firepits, a playground, and the site also accommodates RV and tent camping.
If you’re lucky, you may catch some northern lights dancing in the big open clear sky (it is located in the County of Northern Lights!)

Grow North Gardens (Fairview, Alberta)
Location: 9200 108 Ave, Fairview, AB T0H 1L0, Canada | Website
During this autumn visit, we stopped into the cutest flower U-Pick Grow North Gardens located in the Town of Fairview, where we met owner Michelle and picked our own fresh floral bouquets from Michelle’s expansive flower garden!
Grow North Garden’s U-Pick flower season runs from June to mid-October annually and a lot of summer flowers were still in bloom during our late September visit!
Some of the flowers we picked included: dahlias, gladiolus, asters, statices, feverfews, celosias, ammis, scabiosas, rudbeckia, hydrangeas, bachelor’s buttons, yarrow, sunflowers and more! Their greenhouse opens each May which you’re welcome to pop into to browse and shop too.
Michelle shared with us that she initially studied to be a chemist and worked in the oil and gas industry before opening the farm in her hometown back in 2017. She says this current floral career path definitely smells better, lol!
Flower U-Picks are such a pretty outdoor activity and make a great, fresh keepsake to bring home with you and it’s a really cute option for your northern Alberta trip. Depending on the day you plan to pop by, feel free to message Michelle in advance to ensure U-Pick is available!

Misery Mountain Ridge Line Trail (guided hike with Peace River Adventures)
Location: 99 Avenue, Rolling Hills, Peace River, Alberta, T8S 1M6, Canada | Website
During wintertime, Misery Mountain is a popular ski hill located right in the Town of Peace River. At other times of year including during our autumn visit, the mountain opens up to the public as a freely accessible hiking location with natural trails that offer super scenic views of the Peace River Valley!
Misery Mountain Ridge Line Trail is an approximately 4 km out-and-back, marked hike or scenic stroll that is super close to town—so much so that we passed residents on the trail who say they hike it every day! There is elevation, but it’s gradual so it feels like a well-paced walk and incline you don’t particularly notice as you also stop to snap photos of the orange, red and yellow trees or the river below.
You could certainly self-guide hike yourself up this trail, but a cool service you can book for your outdoor adventures in the region is with Peace River Adventures and their Guided Hikes! (Actually I think this would’ve been great to do the guided hike with them at Dunvegan Overlook Trail too lol).

On our hike, we were expertly and patiently guided by Peace River Adventures co-owner Alana Bergeron and her two twin girls. I say patiently because we stopped several times to take photos lol. It’s so interesting to see a ski hill from this perspective too—you’re able to walk up onto the lift platform once you get to that point of the trail (just don’t sit on the actual lift). And then keep heading up a short distance to get to the summit. On our hike, it was wildly windy up there!
There are plenty of points throughout this hike that offer some really lovely vantage points and scenery and again, as an easy, close-to-town, outdoor option, you couldn’t pick a better trail!
You can add to the adventure by signing up for Peace River Adventures hiking menu offered by local bakery Northern Dough (who I LOVE and write more about below). And just generally, look to Peace River Adventures for activity ideas or support for any kind of outdoor activity you might be thinking of doing in the region. The family-owned business has been investing a lot into the community and I am loving all the convenient, tourism-focused services they are offering! We’ve done canoe rentals with them, jet boat rides, and now these guided hikes! We hope to check out their new campground in the future too (they also offer camping equipment rental packages! They’ve thought of it all).
Directions: To access the natural trail network of Misery Mountain, you can park at the trailhead just off 99th Ave. behind the Westridge Condominiums and head on up!

Murphy’s Flats and the Andrew Homestead Trail (near Peace River, Alberta)
One of the highlights of this recent visit to the Mighty Peace Region was an afternoon side-by-side ride through Andrews’ Homestead Trail and Murphy’s Flats along the Smoky River in Northern Sunrise County (not far from the Town of Peace River). The trails are multi-use, so you can hike, bike, horseback, or in our case, ATV-ride through the very scenic landscape. We got such a lovely tour and history lesson of the region from Dan Boisvert, a passionate councillor in the region. There is a bench at a beautiful view point along the trail that is dedicated to Dan’s late wife too, be sure to stop by!
Andrews’ Homestead Trail actually only just received its sign shortly before our visit. The trail and homestead has obviously been in the area for much longer (since the 1930s), but thanks to Dan’s efforts, a formal trailhead was erected to formally acknowledge the area near Murphy’s Flats.

Murphy’s Flats is a scenic day use area running along the Smoky River that’s perfect for hiking, fishing, kayaking or canoeing. Depending on the time of year, you might find a sandy or a rocky beach. Homestead Trail connects to Murphy’s Flats and it feels super expansive. You could spend a ton of time exploring this area. I am always struck by how BIG and spacious everything feels when I’m exploring the Mighty Peace Region. I felt that during our outdoor adventure specifically here too.
And it’s so interesting to know that the trail we rode on for our autumn adventure was once used by the Andrews’ family children who rode by horseback to attend the one-room log Smoky River School.

Sagitawa Lookout
For a stunning view of the Mighty Peace Region from the Town of Peace River any time of year but especially with all the beautiful fall colours, be sure to pull into Sagitawa Lookout. This could very much be a pack a picnic and hang out spot, it’s so nice!

Shaftesbury Trail Scenic Route from Peace River to Grimshaw, Alberta
In the summer, I had the pleasure of crossing the Peace River by ferry, the Shaftesbury Ferry, a FREE ride on a steel barge, tug-driven, working ferry.
A tourist attraction in many ways if you’re not from the region, it’s actually an integral part of the transportation system in the region (considered an extension of Alberta highway 740 between Highway 49 and the town of Peace River), where you can drive your car, truck, even motorhome right up onto the ferry to be tugged 325 metres across the river. It’s a short ride, just a few minutes, and is the fastest way to get to the other side of the Peace River.
However, this autumn visit, we didn’t want to take the short ride across the river. We wanted to take the scenic route!
So from the Town of Peace River, follow the signs for the scenic Shaftesbury Trail and plan to enjoy all the fall foliage and rolling hill and river views as you drive. We made a stop and got out for some pretty epic river and fall forest shots while driving along the Shaftesbury Trail too.
Our photos were taken near a turn at the top of the hill before you pass Strong Creek Park. If you pass it, pull into Strong Creek Park and double back a minute to get to the scenic river view. There’s also a place called Fort Fork / Mackenzie Cairn (a National Historic Site) along this trail that might make sense as a stop along your adventure.
Where to Eat in and around Peace River, Fairview, and Grimshaw

Fairview, Alberta
The Butter Chicken Company (Fairview, Alberta)
Location: 11213 101 Ave, Fairview, AB T0H 0B4, Canada | Website
If you’re wondering whether you could find authentic Indian cuisine in northern Alberta, the answer is yes and it’s really good. One of my favourite ways to explore is by dining local—wherever I go. No matter how small the town is, I know there’s a great local and often cultural food experience to be had. That was no exception for this Mighty Peace Region trip. In the Town of Fairview, located 50 minutes west of Peace River, you’ll find The Butter Chicken Co.
While the restaurant offers a wide variety of western dishes including steaks, pastas and pizzas, we knew we had to try their authentic Indian curries, coffees, and desserts—dishes that are lovingly made from scratch and unique to the area. The Butter Chicken Co. is home to the only clay-brick tandoor oven in the region! This is a traditional Indian clay oven that reaches hot hot temperatures and chars items like naan to perfection (we tasted it!), and adds smoky depth to meats and veggies and an unmistakable taste you don’t get from a regular oven.
Owner Harry started the restaurant in 2016, after moving with his family to the Mighty Peace Region to work in the hotels and hospitality industry. Using family recipes, at Fairview’s The Butter Chicken Co., you can try delicious and crispy vegetable samosas, very garlicky (we love) naan, mild, medium or hot curries including chicken, lamb, shrimp, spinach, chickpeas, lentils or palak paneer (spinach and cottage cheese like we ordered), along with their most popular, signature dish: a butter chicken combo. We also loved the specialty Indian espresso. Harry also recommended we try a cinnamon rice pudding for dessert which we loved. Sometimes sweet rice is hit or miss for me but this was excellent. Everything we ordered was so good! Each dish felt so fresh and flavourful, The Butter Chicken Co. is truly a small town gem. Harry says he has regulars who come in from all over the Mighty Peace Region and even Grande Prairie and I fully believe it. A must-stop in Fairview!

Grimshaw, Alberta
Krooked House (Grimshaw, Alberta)
Location: 5412 50 St, Grimshaw, AB T0H 0B8, Canada | Website | Facebook | Instagram
We loved our lunch at the quirky Krooked House in Grimshaw! This brewery-adjacent restaurant opened in 2020 by owner Annie, whose family is involved in the restaurant industry in the region. I say brewery-adjacent because Krooked House gives off major brewery vibes but isn’t actually a brewery. It does however work with three of the local breweries in the region to carry their product!
Krooked House has a really great logo and is named after “crooked houses” Annie’s uncle used to build out in eastern Canada as creative garbage covers. When they opened they started with just 12 beers and have since been adding more to the menu including a nice list of interesting hot dog options!

The kitchen is small but super effective—and the hot dogs and nachos we had tasted so good. We ordered the Baked Dog, one of their most popular hot dogs, with sour cream, cheddar, bacon, and green onion. The Nachos come with jalapeno, tomato, green pepper, onion, and corn salsa, and we added chicken as well. The nachos were actually a recommendation from Allie, the owner of Northern Dough Bakery just down the road, so we knew a local’s recommendation was something we needed to try! I don’t remember what drinks we ordered and forgot to write it down (oops lol) but we both slurped up every last drop lol.
Krooked House also carries a ton of great merch and has a lot of fun decor in both of its rooms. Depending on time of year, you can also sit on the patio out front. I really liked that they have a sign with photo featuring their very first guests. Super sweet!
This is the perfect fuel after your Mighty Peace Region outdoor adventures for sure. n

Northern Dough Bakery (Grimshaw, Alberta)
Location: 4411 51 St, Grimshaw, AB T0H 1W0, Canada | Website | Facebook | Instagram
If you’ve been following my previous Mighty Peace Region adventures, the Northern Dough Bakery should be familiar to you. I call it the Best Bakery in Northern Alberta! I love this bakery so much.
Northern Dough Bakery has to be on your itinerary no matter what time of year you’re visiting. No visit to the Mighty Peace Region is complete without grabbing breakfast, lunch, treats or take-home goodies for the road from this cozy, all-butter, made-from-scratch in-house, bakery led by owner Allie. I definitely recommend you pop in by noon or else there’s no guarantee what might be left (it always feels like a revolving door of customers whenever we stop by!)
For this particular trip I was obsessed with the Cinnamon Bun Mini Cake I devoured one in-store and ordered extra to take home. Shocked that this (and some other baked items in the window) are gluten-free because everything always tastes so freaking good. We also enjoyed pumpkin pie, cheddar pepperoni sticks, soup and warm drinks (fall vibes to the max!)
Ask about Baba Nona’s Borscht jar to take home as well! If you’re lucky, there may be some family-recipe Doukhobor Russian Borscht soup in stock as a delicious way to relive your Mighty Peace Region adventure. Say hi to Allie for me when you visit!!

Peace River, Alberta
Board ‘n’ Barrel (Peace River, Alberta)
Location: 9610 94 St, Peace River, AB T8S 1J1, Canada | Website | Facebook | Instagram
Board ‘n’ Barrel is a popular restaurant in the Town of Peace River that I think would do great in a big city too (that speaks to its quality!) This big eatery with beautiful patio that looks out onto the river is definitely the nicest restaurant in town (and all of the Mighty Peace Region).
Nearly everything on the menu is made in-house. We decided to try their signature charcuterie board on this visit (a nod to the name of the restaurant), and I was so pleased with the generous selection of pickled vegetables to accompany our cheese and rose-shape-folded meat. We also enjoyed their salmon on risotto special of the evening (perfectly cooked, beautifully plated!), and had to order their Fig and Speck (fig, lightly-smoked, dry-aged ham, cheese, arugula, caramalized onion, balsamic reduction) flatbread after our server highly recommended it (it did not disappoint!)
I know you’ll love the “flavour-forward” menu at Board ‘n’ Barrel and the best part is taht their menu changes 2-3 times a year (seasonally) so you’ve always got a reason to come back!

J’s Java Domain (Peace River, Alberta)
J’s Java Domain has been a downtown Peace River community staple since 1997.
The cafe is located just steps from the river, and although it has changed owners a few times over the years (including just before our visit this fall), the menu has remained consistently fresh and delicious. Maria, the lovely new owner, took over J’s Java Domain in August 2025 and we got to chat with her when we popped in for breakfast on this visit. The longtime Peace River resident loves baking and feeding her friends and neighbours, and with previous experience managing restaurants, jumped at the opportunity to take over the Peace River cafe.
You come to J’s Java Domain for very fresh, made-to-order sandwiches, salads, wraps, drinks and homemade desserts. My last visit I couldn’t resist building my own sandwich (they call it the “As You Like It Sandwich”) so I did the same this time around.
Maria says she’s committed to keeping what locals love about the menu the same—but adding a bit of her Filipino baking flair to the mix on select days, for instance, on Wednesdays, she’s going to offer pandasal Filipino bread rolls, or include some special Filipino cakes to the line-up. Maria’s favourite thing about J’s Java Domain is how the cafe is healthy, homemade, from-scratch, using whole ingredients. I also love its cozy little couch, plant, and artwork corner. There’s a lot of warmth here!

The Pub (Peace River, Alberta)
Location: Inside Peace Valley Inns, 9609 101 St, Peace River, AB T8S 1J6, Canada | Instagram
We were delightfully surprised by the British-themed decor inside The Pub in the Town of Peace River. Conveniently located inside Peace Valley Inns right as you enter town, The Pub has been serving the Mighty Peace Region for more than 40 years!
Here we were excited to try their Pachos, a heaping mountain of lattice, waffle-cut potato/fry nachos with all your quintessential nacho toppings. Delicious and a different take on your typical nacho.
We also shared extremely juicy Smoked chicken thighs in an “AlaSlammin BBQ sauce.” This is my favourite bite of the night. Any main smoked meat dish here comes with two sides and we’d say that the sides portion size felt like full meals of their own lol.
Enjoy the funny signs, hanging replicas, and stained-glass windows inside, or if there’s a game you’re hoping to catch during your trip, there’s plenty of TV screens for sportsing at The Pub!

WOW Grill (Peace River, Alberta)
Location: 9509 100 Ave, Peace River, AB T8S 0A1, Canada | Website | Facebook | Instagram
WOW Grill is a great Pan-Asian restaurant option right in the Town of Peace River, with some really tasty rice and noodle dishes that span a few different food genres but with a focus on Korean items.
We shared a few dishes here including the Bibimbap vegetables and seasoned beef with egg over rice, the Korean-style stir-fried vegetable, pork and glass noodles with rice, an Egg Drop Soup, and the Wow Chicken Salt & Pepper fried boneless chicken thighs with fries and cabbage salad. SO good!
The fried chicken with cabbage salad and the Korean-style stir-fried veg, pork and glass noodles dish were my top two of the lunch but we enjoyed everything we ordered. Food came out quite quick and the restaurant was pretty full for the late lunch time we arrived—hungry after a morning hike!
You can also find bulgogi, chow mein, fried rice, dumplings, and more at WOW Grill!
Where We Stayed in the Mighty Peace Region

I’ve had the pleasure of trying a lot of different accommodation options in the Mighty Peace Region, some are your straight-forward stays and others are a touch more rustic and unique. Depending on your needs, you’ve got plenty to choose from!
For this visit we stayed at:
Peace Valley Inns
Location: 9609 101 St, Peace River, AB T8S 1S3, Canada | Website
Conveniently located right in town, close to the river and downtown Peace River cafes and restaurants. The in-house pub (The Pub!) is also great and nice that it’s right there.
Quality Inn & Conference Centre
Location: 9510 100 St, Peace River, AB T8S 1S9, Canada | Website
Also well-located right in town and across the street from a great local burger restaurant (What the Chuck), the Quality Inn is also an event space and includes complimentary breakfast.

Previous spots I’d recommend for a more unique stay..

Plus: a special place to shop in Fairview, Alberta: New To You Market
Location: 10902 103 Ave, Fairview, AB T0H 1L0, Canada | Website
The New To You Market located in Fairview, Alberta, is a social enterprise of non-profit organization Crossroads Resource Centre & Women’s Shelter. The store, which is inside an old church (the building has a cool A-frame!) carries gently used, entirely donated, clothing, home goods, gifts, furniture, decor and more. All proceeds from the store benefit Crossroads—the programs they offer and the clients they serve.
The market has been open for a decade (since January 2015). It was really meaningful to learn about how many women the shelter and by extension the market has helped—more than 100 clients and more than 1,717 bed nights used by from women fleeing domestic violence situations. Women and families in need can come to the store through Crossroads Resource Centre to select items to help fund the next step of their journeys.
The value for customers is also great—I ended up grabbing two pieces of clothing for just a handful of dollars. Depending on the day you stop by it might be a ‘basket day’ where they offer even more discounted prices on already discounted items.
If you’re interested in thrifting or just want to support a really impactful store during your Mighty Peace Region visit, New To You Market should be one of your stops!

So that’s my autumn Travel Guide to exploring the Mighty Peace Region in northern Alberta!
