Lindork’s Lists #75 – Hot Dog Fest, World Music Week, lobster rolls and more!

Please note some indoor locations still require masks. If attending an indoor or outdoor event, try to avoid crowds. Sanitize regularly, keep a distance, stay home if sick, get vaccinated!

Things to do this week: a local basketball game, dance in the park, eat a lot of hot dogs and more!
  • Attend Edmonton’s first-ever Hot Dog Festival (various restaurants)

    • Edmonton’s first ever Hot Dog Fest kicks off Aug 1 and runs until Aug 31. Participating restaurants are selling hot dog specials with $1.50 from each weenie sold going directly to Edmonton Meals on Wheels. You can also rate your favourite hot dogs and see who gets crowned the top weiner at the end of the month!

  • Catch live performances in downtown Edmonton (various venues)

    • Take in a weekend at Downtown Live, a summer series of live performances at different locations across downtown Edmonton. There’s daily performances happening this long weekend!

  • Dance at Disco in the Park (Louise McKinney Park)

    • Dance the night away at the first-ever Disco in the Park taking place at Louise McKinney Park July 31 and Aug 1. The event features lots of DJ sets and live performances plus a live mural painting on site.

  • Cheer on the Edmonton Stingers in one of their final home games

    • The Edmonton Stingers (of the Canadian Elite Basketball League) have just a few home games remaining in their 2021 season, including a game this weekend on Aug 2! Get tickets for an exciting game of basketball. I attended a Stingers game a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. If you can, grab floor seats—the vibe is amazing!

  • Check out the first-ever World Music Week at Edmonton Heritage Festival

    • Get tickets to the first-ever World Music Week taking place from July 29-31 at the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park as part of Edmonton Heritage Festival. Take in all sorts of live music from countries you’ve likely never experienced before, including Indigenous drumming, Punjabi music, a Trincan Steel Orchestra, and more! (and book your timed entry to Heritage Fest happening July 31-Aug 2).

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food To Try This Week

Please safely support local restaurants. Although Alberta is lifting restrictions, many restaurants will still require you to wear masks when not eating. Please be kind and respectful.

Eats to consider this week: rolled ice cream, downtown pizzas, and a Cariwest festival box!
  • Lobster rolls and fish and chips from Prairie Fish and Chips (9902 109 St.)

    • I went on a little dog friendly patio crawl this week with my friend Breanna, and one of the stops included Prairie Fish and Chips! I meant to shout out to them back when they changed their name from Grandin Fish and Chips to Prairie Fish and Chips. Good on them for the name change, dog-friendly patio, and having delicious lobster rolls (and fish and chips!)

  • Experience a Geoscapes dome dinner (Snow Valley 13204 Rainbow Valley Rd.)

    • Geoscapes dome dinners are back in Edmonton with rotating chefs every week throughout the summer. Chef Lindsay Porter is cooking this long weekend (July 30-Aug 1) if you want a unique, multi-course meal. I’ve been invited to try it (later in August), and am looking forward to a special night out to celebrate a friend’s birthday!

  • Order a Cariwest festival / food box

    • Cariwest, Edmonton’s Caribbean Arts Festival, returns Aug 6-8 and they’re selling festival / food boxes to help fund the event. All boxes include Cariwest branded rally towel and bandana, products from Grace foods (pepper sauce, chips, coconut water), Waist beads by Lisa, your option of Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum or Rig Hand Spice Brum and a gift certificate for $50 worth of Caribbean food from a local Edmonton eatery.

  • Cool down with rolled ice cream

    • I recently had the matcha rolled ice cream from Scoop ‘N Roll and it was awesome! Topped with mangos and blueberries and made right before my eyes (that’s their thing). Scoop ‘N Roll has seven locations across Edmonton which means less line-ups (generally) at whichever spot you pick. Lots of flavour and topping options—enjoy as we head into the final month of summer (wow, where did summer go?)

  • Try Young & Restless (purveyors of hot pizza and cold beer) (10011 109 St.)

    • The former District Cafe has been converted (I think temporarily) into Young & Restless, downtown Edmonton’s newest pizzeria. My friends Mack and Sharon got two pies for a picnic and were fans! Big, tasty pizzas, locally owned, and on Thursdays you can get two pies for $29.99.

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

Small Business Spotlight

In this new section of Lindork’s Lists, I shout out to support small businesses that aren’t necessarily food/restaurant or event-based.

In this week’s Small Business Spotlight, I’m shouting out to:

YEG Cream Tarts, a Mill Woods home baker who creates the most stunning, glamorous cakes—and gifted me one for my birthday this week! Baker Diana makes all sorts of shapes and size cakes. She calls it art, one tart at a time, typically making unique designs that are sure to stop you in your tracks (and demands a photo before you dig in!) My family and I were so impressed. And my niece, a big fan of meringues, literally went through the entire cake and picked off all the meringues to eat lol. Delicious! Consider ordering from YEG Cream Tarts for your next special occasion!
