Lindork’s Lists #74 – Black Owned and Filipinx Markets, BBQ boards, plus Cooking Class Giveaway!

Newsletter for July 21 – 27, 2021

As Alberta lifts pandemic restrictions, please stay safe! Some indoor locations still require masks. Avoid crowds. Sanitize regularly, keep a distance, stay home if sick, get vaccinated!

As well, some deadlines may have passed for time-sensitive food/event recommendations. If you are a newsletter subscriber, you would get first dibs before deadlines pass.

Things to do this week: Black Owned Market, Filipinx Market, Taste of Edmonton and more!
  • Check out Black Owned Market Edmonton (BOMYEG)’s 1-year Anniversary
    • Edmonton’s Black Owned Market (BOMYEG) is celebrating one year since their first outdoor market on Saturday July 24 from 11-5 p.m. There will be live music plus lots of black-owned businesses and creatives showcasing their products and services. FREE to attend at the parking lot of Victoria School (10210 108 Ave.)

  • Get food tickets for Taste of Edmonton—back at Churchill Square

    • Taste of Edmonton returns to Churchill Square downtown this week running July 22 to August 1. There are 53 different cuisines and over 150 menu items for you to try, with 53 participating restaurants and food trucks (down from 2019 to accommodate physical distancing).

  • Support Sari-Sari Market (Filipinx Outdoor Mini Market)

    • The Sari Sari outdoor Filipinx Owned Mini Market is back for its second event this Saturday, July 24 from 12 – 7 p.m. at 9912 72 Ave. Featuring food from Sosyal Scoops, Filistix, Moos, Mae Cusinera, and Yelo’d Kids, plus over a dozen artists, creatives and entrepreneurs!

  • Check out the ‘SoJa’ (south of Jasper Ave.) Market (so many markets! lol)

    • My friend Sharman, who runs an online vintage clothing business, has organized a ‘SoJa’ South of Jasper Avenue Market also happening this Saturday July 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., if you’re thinking of doing a market crawl you’ve got lots of options this Saturday!

  • Laugh at the Grindstone Theatre Comedy Festival

    • The Grindstone Theatre’s Comedy Festival is back for a second year, with acts performing July 21-25! Lots of funny local comedians will take to the stage. This is an in-person event and masks recommended but not required, so attend at your own risk.

  • Register for Heritage Festival

    • You can now register timed entry passes for this year’s Edmonton Heritage Festival which returns July 31 -Aug 2 and this year requires timed entry passes (free) in order to access the delicious event. Timed entry will help ensure crowds don’t get too crazy. As well, there will be no food tickets for sale like in previous years, food can be purchased direct from vendors. This is all quite different from previous experiences so be prepared and get things booked ahead of time or you might be disappointed if it sells out!

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food To Try This Week

Please safely support local restaurants. Although Alberta is lifting pandemic restrictions, many restaurants will still require you to wear masks when not eating. Please be kind and respectful.

Eats to consider this week: a massive kitchen board from Fairmont Mac, Korean BBQ, Spanish tapas, and more!
  • Dig into the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald’s BBQ kitchen board (10065 100 St.)

    • My friend Sharman writes about Alberta pork for Passion for Pork and invited me to the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald patio to try their phenomenal new Taste Alberta BBQ pork platter! It’s a $75 kitchen board that feeds two and is loaded with smoked pork ribs, chorizo sausage, smoked brisket, pulled pork, cheddar and jalapeño corn bread, grilled corn and BBQ spiced fries. The platter is gluten free minus the bread and fries, and it’ll fill you up. Fall off the bone ribs, flavourful brisket and sausage, fries you’ll keep reaching for, plus an amazing presentation.

  • Sip and savour the sweet selection at ch. cafeteria (14802 Stony Plain Rd.)

    • Sheri wanted to shout out to ch. cafeteria on Stony Plain Road! Sheri says: “They have a great selection of coffees, specialty chocolates and mousse. I just tried a chocolate mousse and it is AMAZING! Their Cafe de Olla is delicious as well.. Also, most of their mousse is made without gelatin! Their online menu doesn’t do justice to all the amazing things they carry.” I’ve been to ch. cafeteria and second Sheri’s recommendation! Give them a try.

  • Grill up some Korean BBQ from Seoul Foods YEG (online)

  • Check out the new Bodega and Italian Centre in Sherwood Park

    • Sherwood Park got some great new openings this week! One of my favourite restaurants, Spanish tapas-focused Bodega has opened a location in the Park (410 Baseline Rd.) And one of the best local grocery shops in the city the Italian Centre has opened their largest store to date at 8005 Emerald Drive. If you’re in the area, these should become your go-tos! If you’re not in the area, day trip fun anyone!?

  • If you’re headed to Jasper: Book a Peak-Nic mountain cooking experience!

    • I was working with Tourism Jasper this week to share some experiences in Jasper National Park and was blown away by Jasper Food Tours’ Peak-Nic experience! This is a beautiful hike, back-country cooking class, and delicious meal all in one! You hike a 3.8 km intermediate trail up to a stunning peak and then get a hands-on cooking class literally set to mountain backdrops, and then enjoy your meal with panoramic views of Jasper! It was actually JUST named one of the top things to do in Canada by TIME Magazine. And I absolutely can confirm it was an unforgettable experience (some outdoor ability for hiking required, but Estelle the host is so lovely, patient, and an amazingly animated and knowledgable guide). I blog (and share a video recap) of the experience soon so watch for that!

    • You can also get 10% off your Peak-nic booking using my code LINDORK!

Small Business Spotlight

In this new section of Lindork’s Lists, I shout out to support small businesses that aren’t necessarily food/restaurant or event-based.

In this week’s Small Business Spotlight, I’m shouting out to:

Chatsworth Farm, located in east central Alberta about two hours east of Edmonton. They are a small, mixed family farm who I think have been doing such an amazing job on social media! They grow grain and legume crops, alfalfa, and raise beef cattle, sheep, turkeys, ducks, and chickens for eggs and meat, on more than 2,000 acres of beautiful rolling parkland. They are offering farm tours and activities for Alberta Open Farm Days on August 14 you should snag a spot before they sell out (free).

You can also order direct from the farm too with Edmonton or Calgary pick-up or delivery options to put together some delicious eats knowing where your food came from!

If you’re a small business owner who could use a shout-out, or know a small business who could use some awareness, let me know and I’ll try to feature them in this new section. You can email me suggestions!
