Lindork’s Lists #73 – The Works, Jerk Festival, New Tan Tan dim sum and more!
Newsletter for July 14 – 20, 2021
As Alberta lifts pandemic restrictions, please stay safe! Some indoor locations still require masks. Avoid crowds. Sanitize regularly, keep a distance, stay home if sick, get vaccinated!
As well, some deadlines may have passed for time-sensitive food/event recommendations. If you are a newsletter subscriber, you would get first dibs before deadlines pass.
Check out pop-up installations as part of The Works Art + Design Festival
The Works Art + Design Festival runs at various locations across the city until July 17, featuring impressive pop-up art installations in Churchill Square and around town (like on Alberta Avenue).
Shop the Timeless Vintage Market (8426 Gateway Blvd.)
Find a little bit of everything vintage for everyone at the new Timeless Vintage Market at the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre just off Whyte Ave. on Saturday, July 17 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is FREE and they’re promising a ‘massive variety of vendors ready to get your wardrobe right for the rest of the summer!’
Take in Scenes from the Sidewalk (10330 84 Ave.)
Edmonton’s Plain Jane Theatre is putting on Scenes from the Sidewalk performances this Sunday, July 18 and Monday, July 19 starting at 7:30 p.m. both days. Audiences sit in the lobby of the The Fringe Theatre and enjoy the cabaret through their beautiful floor to ceiling lobby windows. The community is the stage! Tickets are PAY WHAT YOU WILL.
Do some downward cat at Cat Yoga with SCARS (7104 87 Ave.)
Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is putting on a Cat Yoga event featuring adoptable cats. There are many yoga session times to choose from. Tickets are $25. This is an adorable fundraiser for SCARS.
Experience the second annual Edmonton Jerk Festival (10844 117 St.)
The second annual Edmonton Jerk Festival runs Saturday, July 17, 2021 at Queen Mary Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. featuring all sorts of Jamaican cuisine. Dig into jerk chicken, pork, fish, lobster, veggies, plus Jamaican patties, fruit cake, rice, burgers, bread and more. Free entry, free parking, obviously pay for the food, lol.
Book Heritage Festival tickets
The Edmonton Heritage Festival returns July 31 -Aug 2 and this year requires timed entry passes (free) in order to access the delicious event. Timed entry will help ensure crowds don’t get too crazy. Timed entry passes are released starting July 19 (Monday), so wanted to give you a heads up! As well, there will be no food tickets for sale like in previous years, food can be purchased direct from vendors.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food To Try This Week
Please safely support local restaurants. Although Alberta is lifting restrictions, many restaurants will still require you to wear masks when not eating. Please be kind and respectful.
Grab some dim sum while supporting New Tan Tan (10133 97 St.)
Thanks to @EquiSportsTherapy for sharing a reminder that the family who owns New Tan Tan in downtown Edmonton could really use your support. Not only have they been hard hit by the pandemic, but LRT construction has made it really hard to find, navigate, and park to try their food. Please consider ordering Chinese food from them this week!
Eat and sing at Soju Edmonton (9110 51 Ave.)
Korean karaoke bar Soju Edmonton has reopened and is now part of the Hanjan Korean restaurant family! Throughout July, every 2-hour karaoke room booking gets free garlic butter fries (SO good!) Their menu now features some popular items you’d find at Hanjan (mmm budae jjigae army stew, kimchi fried rice, Korean pancakes, and more). I love Korean karaoke (there are English songs—just the style is private rooms!) If you’ve never tried, could be a perfect time to try now!
Try some specialty pizzas from New Way Pizza (13128 66 St.)
I saw A.J. share about a “Pickle Me” pizza from New Way Pizza and thought it would be a nice chance to highlight this small pizza business on 66 Street. They also have Butter Chicken pizza, nacho pizza, potato pizza, and more unique specialties.
Congratulate Northern Chicken with an order (10704 124 St.)
Northern Chicken on 124 Street was awarded a $10,000 prize, free local advertising and mentorship from TELUS Business as part of their #StandWithOwners campaign! Congratulate this awesome local business with an order this week.
Plan your eats and stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs
Mike and I were hosted by the Fairmont Banff Springs this week, as the historic resort hotel in the heart of Banff National Park reopened all of their restaurants! From specialty drinks at the Rundle Bar, Afternoon Tea, Alberta beef at their steak house, and some of the most Instagrammable dining room settings and mountain views you could experience, we had such a spectacular time (and incredible service—as you do at a Fairmont property). The Castle in the Rockies is a truly special place. A bucket list hotel absolutely. They’re offering 30% off via an Alberta Resident Rate. Check out all the dining options at the Fairmont Banff Springs.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
Small Business Spotlight
In this new section of Lindork’s Lists, I shout out to support small businesses that aren’t necessarily food/restaurant or event-based.
In this week’s Small Business Spotlight, I’m shouting out to:
Bountiful Farmers’ Market, “your multi-day indoor farmers market” celebrating its two-year anniversary this July! Bountiful is a three-day market located in south Edmonton (3696 97 St.) and is your one-stop-shop for fresh local veggies, meat, coffee roasters, Alberta beer and wine, and more! It’s a lovely market with high quality products, an awesome ambience, and a stage / entertainment area too. They’ve started selling Market Vouchers which never expire, work like cash, and can be used at any of their vendor booths, which is something to consider as nice, support-local gifts.
Supporting Bountiful Farmers’ Market means supporting over 100 local vendors!
If you’re a small business owner who could use a shout-out, or know a small business who could use some awareness, let me know and I’ll try to feature them in this new section. You can email me suggestions!
