Lindork’s Lists #59 – Book a ghost tour, try Edmonton Activity Bingo, Korean Fried Chicken, and more!

Newsletter for April 7 – April 14, 2021

Please note: Alberta has restrictions in place to address COVID-19I do encourage you to try and support local businesses during this time, if you’re able, but do so in a safe way. Wear masks, sanitize regularly, avoid crowds, keep at a distance, shop alone, take-out / eat outside (picnics), choose digital options if they’re available and stay home if you are sick.

Things to do this week: find the EDMOWOOD sign, book an outdoor Edmonton Ghost Tour, plan your Downtown Dining Week take-out and more!
  • Book an outdoor Edmonton Ghost Tour

    • Edmonton Ghost Tours are back for their spring walking tours, with dates kicking off this weekend. All takes place outside with small groups. Nadine Bailey leads these ghost tours and she’s got a wealth of ghostly knowledge. She’s got a mic system too so you can keep a distance and still hear history of some of the spookiest sites in the city.

  • Find the EDMOWOOD Sign

    • There’s this new EDMOWOOD (think Hollywood) sign that’s been popping up in different locations around the city. Virgin Radio Edmonton announced they were behind it and if you share a photo with #EDMOWOOD on social media you could be entered to win $1,000! Follow their Twitter account for hints on where the sign is popping up next.

  • Try the City Hall School Edmonton Activity Bingo

  • Take in a virtual cocktail tasting experience with Above Average Drinks / Biera

    • Above Average Drinks and Biera are putting on a Live, Virtual Cocktail Tasting Experience with original cocktails developed by James Grant (who recently won World Class Canada Bartender of the Year!) Order the cocktail tasting kit from Biera and tune in for the virtual experience.

  • Take out or hit the patio for Downtown Dining Week April 13-25

    • Edmonton’s Downtown Dining Week returns April 13-25 with 51 participating restaurants in the downtown area, including many new “fast casual” spots offering special set menus for set prices ranging from $20-$65. Check out all the options and “keep your cravings local!”

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food To Try This Week

Alberta dining rooms are closed starting April 9. Please continue to support with take-out/pick-up. Consider an outdoor picnic! Review current Alberta COVID-19 restrictions here.

Eats to consider this week: Korean Fried Chicken, housemade pastas, ‘custaroons’, fresh fruit teas and more!
  • Try a new Korean Fried Chicken Food Truck: Oh!Chicken(4803 55 Ave.)

    • Thanks to Diane for passing along this new Korean Fried Chicken Food Truck called Oh!Chicken located in Mill Woods (at the Wash Factory parking lot), serving up eats from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. They’ve got a variety of bone-in or boneless fried chicken flavours. You’re encouraged to call them 780-868-9399 to place your order and reduce wait times.

  • Try meringue cupcakes or custaroons from a Filipino home bakery (online)

    • I also came across Hurno YEG this week, bakers of ‘brazo en tazas’ (meringue cupcakes) and ‘custaroons’ (custard macaroons!) Find the menu for this Filipino west Edmonton home-based business on their Facebook Page and consider trying these unique and tasty treats!

  • Order all the drinks from Dagu Rice Noodle (10408 Jasper Ave.)

  • Get the Fettuccine Montanara pasta from Porta Romana (#7 420 King St.)

    • If you haven’t tried the Fettuccine Montanara pasta from Porta Romana out in Spruce Grove (just west of Edmonton) yet, you’ve got to! Features bacon, bolognese sauce, mushrooms, blue cheese, and truffle oil over handmade pasta and I love it. Their Mezzaluna Butternut pasta is also to die for.

  • Pick up fried pepperoni and poutine from Blowers & Grafton (10550 82 Ave.)

    • This week Mike and I tried Blowers & Grafton for the first time, a Halifax-inspired restaurant. The fried pepperoni was excellent, as was the bacon cheeseburger poutine! Lobster rolls were also pretty good (and come with crispy kettle chips). I would definitely come back for more pepperoni and to try all their different poutines!

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

Stop Asian Hate Alberta Global Edmonton End Racism Interview

I was invited onto Global Edmonton to talk more about the #StopAsianHateAlberta initiative I co-developed with Jessie Cayabo of Bonafide Media & PR and Carmen Cheng of Food Karma Blog. I’m grateful for the opportunity to spread this important message.

I talked about why the initiative came to, microaggressions and subtle vs. overt racism, actions Albertans can take for racial justice, how this issue goes beyond just stopping Asian hate—but all race-based hate, and shout-outs for some delicious Asian restaurants in Edmonton.

Mike’s birthday is coming up and around this time last year for his birthday, we decided to celebrate with a Birthday Week of Daily Pizzas! It was a LOT of pizza!! Mike ranked his Top 5 (of the ones we tried). We’ve since tried more great pizza spots in town, so may do an updated ranking at some point soon, lol.
