Lindork’s Lists #50 – Poutine Week, Black History Month, Valentine’s Ideas And More!
Things to Do This Week
Please note: Alberta has restrictions in place to address COVID-19. I do encourage you to try and support local businesses during this time, if you’re able, but in a safe way. Wear masks, sanitize regularly, avoid crowds, keep at a distance, shop alone, choose take-out and stay home if you are sick and choose digital options if available.
Dig into all sorts of different poutine for La Poutine Week
One of the most wonderful weeks of the year (lol) La Poutine Week runs Feb 1-7, 2021 in cities across Canada including Edmonton. Check out all the poutine options you can try at Edmonton restaurants then head to the La Poutine website and vote for your favourites. Enjoy!
Celebrate virtual Year of the Ox (Lunar New Year) Celebrations
This year’s Lunar New Year Celebrations in Edmonton will be virtual, with local festivities broadcast online Feb 6 & 7 for free. There will be live performances, arts and crafts demonstrations, interactive activities, online games, storytelling and more. Check out the full schedule and celebrate! I’ll be blogging some typical Lunar New Year Vietnamese food soon too if you’d like to give it a try next week too (the actual new year is on Feb. 12).
Take part in Black History Month
February marks Black History Month and this is perhaps the most important one in a long time given last year’s heightened Black Lives Matter movement and much more attention thankfully being paid to eliminating systemic racism. This Edmonton Journal article outlines different virtual events, books, films and other ways you can mark the occasion. Also check out this Guide to Black-Owned Restaurants in Edmonton Alanna Morton guest blogged on my website last June.
Shop the Made With Love Online Valentine’s Market
The Painted Door Markets based in Beaumont, has brought together various local makers for an online Valentine’ themed market Made With Love taking place Feb 4 – 7. There’s all sorts of makers set to sell everything from gifts to art, treats and more.
Get your Valentine’s take-out meal and sweet treat orders in
Valentine’s is still over a week away but this is your reminder to get your orders in for special take-out meals or sweet treats before the order deadlines pass! Many order deadlines are coming up this weekend. Use my Guide to Sweet Treats for Valentine’s Day, Where Edmonton’s suggestions, or Twyla Campbell’s Valentine’s Options to help you decide. (Or just check with your favourite restaurants or bakeries to see what they might be offering!)
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food To Try This Week
All restaurants in Alberta are take-out/pick-up only (no dine-in service) until at least Feb. 8.
Please continue to support local restaurants by ordering take out!
Brunch Box from BOX’D (Online Edmonton Business)
Thanks to @momof3yeg for sharing her stunning Brunch Box spread from new online Edmonton business BOX’D. These boxes are filled to the brim with everything from charcuterie to desserts. The photos look amazing! Can’t wait to try myself.
New Menu Items from Fairmont Hotel Macdonald (10065 100 St.)
The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has a new Executive Chef Jiju Paul and with it, a new curbside menu (dinner + brunch). Big fan of the kitchen board and short ribs, which were gifted to me, and my friend Sharman really enjoyed their weekend brunch take-out as well (the Fairmont is also super accommodating of allergies—Sharman is gluten-free and had no issues!)
Rotating Vegan Meals from Nourish 2 Flourish (Online Edmonton Business)
Thanks to Jess for recommending Nourish 2 Flourish, an online Vegan eatery that delivers plant-based cuisine right to your door. They offer rotating meals (this week is Vegan Spicy Sate Pho). “The prices are incredibly affordable and they are wonderful people,” Jess says. Check out their Valentine’s Vegan fondue too.
Black eats for Black History Month (various locations)
February is Black History Month and one of my favourite ways to support BIPOC in Edmonton is to order from their restaurants! If you need help deciding what Black-owned businesses to support (all the time but especially this month), use this Guide to Black-Owned Restaurants in Edmonton Alanna Morton guest blogged on my website last June. I’ll be picking up from one of my favourite Ethiopian restaurants Awash! Also check my Instagram account for a giveaway of gift cards so you can try Black-owned restaurants!
SABOR lobster risotto, sablefish and mussels local Chef Kit
I partnered with Chef Table Living to try their local Chef Kits last week and had the absolute pleasure of cooking up (and devouring) SABOR’s lobster risotto, sablefish and mussels dish. I love this local box idea, comes with all the ingredients you need plus a video with the featured chef showing you how to make the meal! This dish was incredible. 1,00000% recommend! And if you do order a Chef Kit, use my code LINDORK10 for 10% off.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
New On The Blog
There’s a new winter sport you can try right here in Edmonton! Ice climbing is a fun and tiring. It’s challenging, but exhilarating. It’s literally unlike anything you’ve done in this city. If you’re itching to try a new winter activity this season, you should give climbing Edmonton’s new Ice Wall a try! Regardless of age or experience level, this Ice Wall is for you!! Check out my Beginner’s Guide to Everything You Need To Know About Edmonton’s New Ice Climbing Wall.
From the Blog Vault
Around this time each year since 2018, I’m always excited to share my blog post: DIY: Make Your Own Super Bowl Snack Stadium! Yes, the Super Bowl is this weekend, somehow during a pandemic… lol. And while you absolutely should not be having any indoor gathering for the game (or otherwise), you CAN still make a Super Bowl Snack Stadium to enjoy within your own household. It’s super easy to make!
