Things to Do This Week

Please note: Alberta has restrictions in place to address COVID-19I do encourage you to try and support local businesses during this time, if you’re able, but in a safe way. Wear masks, sanitize regularly, avoid crowds, keep at a distance, shop alone, choose take-out and stay home if you are sick and choose digital options if available.

Lindorks Lists 49 -Things To Do This Week - Explore Edmonton
Take a plunge for a good cause, explore Alberta’s forests with Nathan Fillion, stream ‘The Look’ by Northern Light Theatre, and more!
  • Explore Alberta Forests virtually with Nathan Fillion as your guide
    • The Alberta Forest Products Association has launched a new project called Explore Alberta Forests, a virtual, 360-degree tour of the different stages of Alberta’s forests narrated by Edmonton born and raised celebrity Nathan Fillion, with scripts written by my friend Jon Manning (in partnership with Berlin Communications). If you want to have fun learning more about lifestages of forests than you ever thought you’d need or want to know, this is the virtual tour for you to do this weekend!

  • Take part in the 2021 Edmonton Virtual Polar Plunge
    • The annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Alberta has gone virtual this year, meaning it’s up to you how you want to plunge—plopping into snow, using cold buckets of water, or in a kiddie pool in your backyard, to name a few ideas. Fundraise and #FreezeForAReason to help Special Olympics athletes. The virtual Plunge happens Jan. 31. Register for $50.

  • Catch a virtual viewing of ‘The Look’ by Edmonton’s Northern Light Theatre
    • It’s the last weekend to catch the North American premiere of ‘The Look’ by Northern Light Theatre. What is ‘The Look’ about? “Marilyn was once a celebrity, the original “Estelle Girl” of the Estelle Cosmetics line. Today she is an aged-out supermodel, giving lectures on cosmetics and demonstrating the various “Looks” and fantasy images that she inhabited as the “Estelle Girl”. Over the course of the lecture Marilyn is forced to confront her real self. But can she cope with this new found awareness?” Stream Jan 28-31. $31.50 per ticket.

  • Celebrate 40 Years of Pro Coro Canada (Edmonton-based) Choir
  • Register for Dine & Dash Edmonton in support of local restaurants
    • There’s a new run in town—the Dine & Dash virtual race put by on the Anti Social Running Club supports Edmonton’ restaurants. Sign up and run a 10K, Half Marathon (21.1K), or Full Marathon (42.2K) anytime from February 7th – 14th then celebrate your run with local food. Your registration includes your choice of take-home dinner from Red Star, The Next Act, Cafe Mosaics, Dorinku Osaka, Campio Brewing Co, or Tres Carnales Rostizado home. There are no race rules: run at your own pace, indoors or outdoors, and at your own time between February 7th and 14th. Registration deadline is Feb 6. Individual registration is $45 or $90 for pairs.

Food To Try This Week

All restaurants in Alberta are take-out/pick-up only (no dine-in service) until further notice.

Please continue to support local restaurants by ordering take out!

Eats to consider this week: matcha green tea from Tsujiri, local Chef Kits, deep fried cookies and more!
  • Warm up with a hot matcha drink from Tsujiri (10173 109 St.)
    • I was out working in the cold snap this week so I needed a hot drink to keep warm! I normally love Tsujiri’s cold matcha black sesame latte but figured it’d be fantastic hot too—and it was! I suggest you try Tsujiri’s hot drinks (their downtown location also makes Japanese food to go!) This is one of those very sweet, small businesses we need to be protecting at all costs.

  • Cook up a local Chef Table Living Chef Kit, including seafood from SABOR
    • I partnered with Edmonton organization Chef Table Living to try their local restaurant Chef Kits! I picked Mussels with Lobster Risotto & Sable Fish from SABOR and it was DELICIOUS! And so easy to put together (fun following along with Chef Lino via video). You get pre-portioned, quality ingredients and a step-by-step video from participating chef. It’s a really nice, local meal kit option and they also sell Cocktail Kits too. If you’re interested in ordering a kit, get 10% off using my code LINDORK10. Watch my Instagram next week for a chance to win a kit as well, and next week’s newsletter will also include a subscriber-only giveaway for some of Chef Table Living’s upcoming virtual Valentine’s events!

  • Pick up some Japanese from Sakai Sushi (141 Century Crossing, Spruce Grove)
    • Spruce Grove (west of Edmonton) has some great restaurant selections and a surprising amount of Asian options for the size of the city. I really like the chirashi, sashimi and bento boxes from Sakai Sushi. Consider giving them a try if you find yourself in the area, you won’t be disappointed!

  • Dig into deep fried cookies from Mama E’s Cookie Snacks (online)
    • Thank you to Mama E’s Cookie Snacks for gifting me some of their deep fried cookies to try! I tried the Calgary-based company’s matcha and white chocolate cookie bites and thin cinnamon cookie snacks and can confirm they’re addictive! And give very mini donuts / mid-way carnival vibes, lol.

  • Grab a steak from Coliseum Steak & Pizza (8015 118 Ave.)
    • After 45 years, the Coliseum Steak & Pizza has finally launched a website and is offering delivery (through Skip—but I still recommend you order direct and pick-up from them to ensure they keep the profits!) This old school steak house and pizza joint has been serving Edmontonians since 1976. Let’s make sure they stick around post-pandemic too. Check out their FAQ page for a laugh!

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
