Things to Do This Week
Attend the Enoch Cree Nation Traditional Powwow (The Venue at River Cree)
The Enoch Cree Nation Traditional Powwow is a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture with dancing, drumming and singing taking place March 28-30 at The Venue at River Cree Resort & Casino and there are Grand Entries at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. All are invited to experience powerful performances and traditional regalia. This (looks to be free!) event reminded me of this nice Travel Alberta video where an Indigenous content creator Eagle Blackbird asked folks at a Pow Wow if non-Indigenous folks are welcome at a Pow Wow.
Check out Edmonton’s largest annual board game convention (9210 118 Ave.)
Games On Boards Festival Society is hosting GOBfest, Edmonton’s largest annual board game convention March 28-30 where guests can learn and play new games with the help of experienced hosts, or watch the action unfold. There’s also a Prototype Alley showcasing original games created by local designers, and a flea market for shopping. This is a ticketed event.
Experience the 81st Annual University of Alberta Mixed Chorus Spring Concert
The University of Alberta Mixed Chorus Spring Concert with Faculty of Edmonton Hand Bell Ringers presents their 81st Annual Spring Concert on Friday, March 28 at Winspear Centre. This year’s theme Elements explores “the fundamental forces of nature and the human experience through a captivating selection of choral and handbell music.”
Check out the Edmonton Magic Club’s Magic Mania (10019 81 Ave.)
I think this sounds really cute lol the Edmonton Magic Club presents Magic Mania, where they perform their favourite magic tricks at the Grindstone Theatre on Saturday, March 29. “See Edmonton’s favourite magic acts up close in an intimate setting. You’ll be amazed as actual wonders occur at your table, near your seat or even in your own mind! Magic Mania is a magic show that brings curiosity and wonder, all while providing a local flair. From the strange to the puzzling, the mystical or downright hilarious, who knows what mysteries Edmonton’s favourites can pull from their hat!” All ages show!
Get tickets to the (art) circus! (2 Sir Winston Churchill Sq.)
The Art Gallery of Alberta’s Refinery: The Grand Circus (late night art party) is on Saturday, March 29 starting at 8 p.m. Refinery: The Grand Circus transforms the Art Gallery of Alberta into a thrilling world of performance, artistry, and immersive entertainment. Inspired by the drama and wonder of the classic circus, this adult-only late-night party includes performances from Sacred Ties, dancing to music from a live DJ, flash tattoos, roving circus performers, art experiences, carnival-inspired food and drink and more.
Don’t miss the final weekend of these art exhibits…

Go for some Mexican cuisine in the city (various locations)
After I got back from my recent Mexico trip I asked on Facebook for folks to suggest their favourite local Mexican eateries. Here’s a few suggestions if you’d like to satisfy some taco or other Mexican food cravings this week!
Smokin’ Barrels, El Mero Mero, El Mariachi, Luna, Anejo, The Three Amigos, Habaneros (in Leduc), and Paraiso Tropical (Latin Market)
Check out the new Leopold’s Tavern in south west Edmonton (2861 119A St.)
Leopold’s Tavern has expanded to south west Edmonton in Heritage Village (its third location in the city). My intern Alex is recommending it as a spot to eat this week! I am also partial to the vibes and special poutines here.
“Leopold’s Tavern has always been one of my favourite spots. The food never misses and being the home of the punchbowl poutine makes it even better. The atmosphere is unbeatable. Every location is filled with vintage signs, quirky knick-knack and old-school photos that make them feel like a cozy, lived-in space full of stories. I’m so excited that they have just opened a new spot on the south side, in Heritage Valley. Can’t wait to spend all my time there!”
Where I ate in Chinatown this week:
I hosted two group meals as part of the Chinatown Chow Down food and vibrancy initiative I’m running and this week’s meals took place at One01 Bistro (Hong Kong style cuisine restaurant marking one year open in April) and Sai Woo Garden (a longstanding Chinese restaurant institution operating for 40 years). The groups had great experiences at both restaurants and would encourage you to check them out if you haven’t yet been!
