Things to Do This Week

  • Check out Opening Weekend of Silver Skate Festival (Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park)

    • Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival Silver Skate Festival returns for its 35th anniversary this weekend Feb 7 until Feb 17 at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. It’s FREE to attend and there’s a ton of all ages, outdoor winter fun from

    • Bundle up and come out for some FREE winter fun. There’s lots of fun activities day and night—including the Snow Sculptures and epic Fire Sculpture Burns (Friday-Sundays). There’s snow slides or ball and sledge hockey, beautiful art installations (illuminated at night), wonderful Indigenous cultural experiences at Heritage Village, an International Festival of Winter Cinema (films on a giant snow screen!), ice bikes, public skating of course, and more!

    • Long-time subscribers may know that I do social media for the festival every February so you’ll likely see me snapping photo and filming video on site (say hi!)

    • If you’re only coming down once I usually recommend a Saturday or Sunday around 4 p.m. so you can get a day AND night experience, but be sure to check out the full schedule to see what activities + timing makes the most sense for you and honestly, come more than once! It’s FREE!

    • You can also get a 50/50 online raffle ticket to support the event (and win half the jackpot). Or find other ways to support this free, community event.

  • Take part in the Sweet Treats and Latte Festival (Old Strathcona)

    • Edmonton’s sweetest festival is back on Whyte Ave. this Feb. 7-17! The Sweet Treats and Latte Festival is where businesses offer sweet treat or drink specials. You can enter contests for a chance to win prizes depending on how many spots you visit and stickers you collect.

  • Check out a few markets this weekend:

  • Experience some live theatre:

    • It’s the final weekend to see After the Trojan Women by Alma Theatre presented by Common Ground Arts. The show is about the ancient Trojan Women as they prepare for their voyage to Greece. “Thrilling, heartbreaking, and inspiring, After the Trojan Women will sweep you across millennia and cultures of women in times of war and perseverance.” My friends went and said it was extremely powerful. It runs until Feb. 8.

    • The King of Yees runs Feb 5-15 at the Walterdale Theatre, a comedy about an American born Chinese woman Lauren Yee who hasn’t paid much attention to her cultural background until her father disappears and she must navigate San Francisco’s Chinatown and face her history in order to get him back.

    • Radical Love: A Frontline Worker Cabaret is a fundraiser featuring drag, burlesque, and laughs taking place at Beercade on Sunday, Feb. 9.

  • Participate in local Black History / Black Futures Month events:

    • The YEG Mom Collective is hosting a Galentines event on Feb. 8.

    • Parents may be interested in this Period Positivity Workshop being offered for youth (with parent in attendance) on Feb. 9. The organizer shared with me that“during a struggle with infertility, I learned so much about my period/ovulation and my body that I didn’t know. It left me in a bit of a rage on how we support young women and others who menstruate, that this knowledge isn’t out there or taught. This is my small action to change that.”

    • There’s a few Super Bowl LIX Watch Parties happening around town – at the River Cree Resort & Casino, MKT, Hudsons Pub, or The Pint on Whyte Ave.

    • Winter City Weekends (Ice Grooves and Swing & Skate) takes place every weekend til Feb. 28. There are also FREE daily skate rentals City Hall Plaza!
