Things to Do This Week
Check out Opening Weekend of Silver Skate Festival (Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park)
Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival Silver Skate Festival returns for its 35th anniversary this weekend Feb 7 until Feb 17 at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. It’s FREE to attend and there’s a ton of all ages, outdoor winter fun from
Bundle up and come out for some FREE winter fun. There’s lots of fun activities day and night—including the Snow Sculptures and epic Fire Sculpture Burns (Friday-Sundays). There’s snow slides or ball and sledge hockey, beautiful art installations (illuminated at night), wonderful Indigenous cultural experiences at Heritage Village, an International Festival of Winter Cinema (films on a giant snow screen!), ice bikes, public skating of course, and more!
Long-time subscribers may know that I do social media for the festival every February so you’ll likely see me snapping photo and filming video on site (say hi!)
If you’re only coming down once I usually recommend a Saturday or Sunday around 4 p.m. so you can get a day AND night experience, but be sure to check out the full schedule to see what activities + timing makes the most sense for you and honestly, come more than once! It’s FREE!
You can also get a 50/50 online raffle ticket to support the event (and win half the jackpot). Or find other ways to support this free, community event.

The show is about the ancient Trojan Women as they prepare for their voyage to Greece. “Thrilling, heartbreaking, and inspiring, After the Trojan Women will sweep you across millennia and cultures of women in times of war and perseverance.” My friends went and said it was extremely powerful. It runs until Feb. 8.

Food to Try This Week!
Try Filipino cuisine from RJ Tasty Bites (9711 107 Ave.)
The latest Chinatown Chow Down Group Lunch took place at RJ Tasty Bites, a great Filipino restaurant in Chinatown. Almost all of the attendees had never been before! And were super impressed with their meal. I really loved the Sinigang Soup, a popular Filipino sour soup, and the Sizzling Pork Sisig is always a great dish to order. Also enjoy the Taho Filipino Silken Tofu with Sago Pearls and Syrup. Yum!
Enjoy TAKOPO’s Beef Pepper Steak and Flamed Nigiri (West Edmonton Mall)
I recently tried TAKOPO’s Flamed Salmon Nigiri at a Lunar New Year event and then later found myself at their food court location inside West Edmonton Mall, where I tried their Beef Pepper Steak! Both dishes were great. The Flamed Nigiri is fun because they torch it in front of you. There’s not a lot of places in town you can get Beef Pepper Steak so I was happy to satisfy this craving I didn’t know I had until I saw it on the menu and excitedly ordered it.
Order from the new Paninis ghost kitchen Wise Guys Square Pies (online)
Paninis Italian Cucina has launched Wise Guys Square Pies, a grandma-style New York pizza ghost kitchen brand that operates out of Panini’s Sherwood Park location. The pizzas are only available for order on UberEats. We enjoy Paninis (and I have a friend who absolutely LOVES them), so are happy for their newest venture!
For Black History Month: dine at River City Revival House (10030 102 St.)
The River City Revival House located in the basement of the Starlite Room, has a fun, musician-themed menu (Wings of Leon, Nat King Coleslaw, Notorious P.I.G., etc. lol) Executive Chef Felicia Watson has been at the helm at the River City Revival House for some time now! She is profiled in Black History Month Magazine (pg. 35). Catch a show and plan dinner here too!
