Things to Do This Week
With Halloween coming up quickly, I’m starting the next few newsletters with Halloween-focused events! Here are my Halloween selections for this week:
I’m mentioning DARK at Fort Edmonton Park again because I just went over the weekend and had a great time! Fast passes are pricy but worth it to skip the line and give you the chance to go through the multiple haunted houses multiple times. My haunted house ranking goes in this order (from favourite to least favourite but even least favourite is fun): ACID TRIP, 3 A.M., Undead Mile, and Cursery Rhymes. I also like their food truck set-up this year, it felt like there were more options to dine at various places. * my visit was hosted
NorthwestFEARFest runs Oct. 16-22, featuring a bone-chilling lineup of 16 horrifying films.
The Reuse Centre has a few Halloween events coming up: Halloween Lanterns workshop on Oct. 17 and Halloween Costumes Swap on Oct. 19.

Food to Try This Week!
Try inari and new rice bowls from Sam’s on Whyte (10538 82 Ave.)
I was really happy with my inari (assorted four piece) from Sam’s on Whyte. Inari are rice stuffed tofu pouches. Sam’s offers toppings on top of the rice! My four toppings were: Salmon Poke, Tuna Poke, Scallop. and Spicy Pork. All delicious! My friends really liked the Gochujang spicier Salmon as well. Sam’s on Whyte has very limited seating here so more intended as a grab and go spot. They just got on Uber Eats and started offering rice bowls too. Try it!
Check out An Chay—Vegetarian / Vegan Vietnamese (11203 Jasper Ave.)
My Facebook Memories tells me that on this day seven years ago I was trying the newly-opened An Chay, Edmonton’s only entirely Vegetarian / Vegan Vietnamese eatery. Seven years isn’t a typical milestone but thought I’d share a reminder to check them out if you haven’t—the restaurant business is so tough so really any year a restaurant makes it to is worth celebrating.
Grab a focaccia sandwich from Va! (12024 Jasper Ave.)
Last week I tried Va! Italian cafe from the same folks behind beloved Edmonton eateries Corso 32, Bar Bricco, and Uccellino. This casual, quick serve downtown Edmonton spot specializes in Italian focaccia panini sandwiches, pizza by the slice, plus salads, desserts, coffee and wine.
It’s a small space, with limited seating—though service is very quick just a warning you might not get a table (no resos!) but they’ve also got bench seating out the door lol. I enjoyed my Mortadella sandwich and my friend ordered a Cacio e Pepe one (there are no noodles in this sandwich LOL that might be obvious but we both thought briefly oh maybe it’s a Cacio e Pepe noodle sandwich lol). I’m not a huge fan of focaccia (it’s a lot of bread for me—I know that’s blasphemous for bread lovers lol) so if you’re like me this might not be up your alley but definitely worth a pop-in and the new Olia Italian Restaurant (also from the Corso 32 group) is open next door too.
Grab some local bubble tea!
You may have heard of the ‘Bobba’ cultural appropriation controversy. Thanks to CBC Edmonton for having me on Radio Active to chat about it from a social media strategy / marketing perspective (click to listen to the interview). Perhaps it’s a good week to go support your local bubble tea shops! I love Boba Bar in Sherwood Park, BTCL in Spruce Grove, Boba Club in north Edmonton, Kung Fu Tea in south Edmonton, The Alley in Brewery District, West Edmonton Mall and Windermere, to name just a few!
Register for A Taste of Sri Lanka Cooking Class!
The next Secret Ingredient YEG cooking class is A Taste of Sri Lanka Experience on Oct. 20. Instructor Dinithi will walk participants through making Sri Lankan Fish Cutlets, Nasi Goreng, and Sri Lankan Caramel Pudding. Secret Ingredient YEG is a unique experience in Edmonton because the instructors are all local women and home cooks sharing recipes representing their culture and heritage!
And here’s a few food events you may be interested in…
