Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: Comedy shows, Jerk Festival, arts in unexpected places & more!
  • Check out the Edmonton Jerk Festival (Queen Mary Park, 10844 117 St.)

    • The family-friendly, annual Edmonton Jerk Festival returns this Saturday, July 6 at Queen Mary Park from 12-9 p.m., featuring food, drinks, games, live performances and more! The cultural event features “all things jerk—the authentic Jamaican style” and is FREE to attend.

  • Enjoy all the good dogs at Muttstock (Elmwood Park – 12505 75 St.)

    • Edmonton’s original Music & Dog Festival Muttstock returns this Saturday, July 6 at Elmwood Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is a FREE family event where all dogs are welcome to enjoy music, mutts, and memories.

  • Experience ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ (9828 101A Ave.)

    • The Citadel Theatre’s latest—The Play That Goes Wrong—begins this weekend July 6 with shows through August 4. This looks to be a fun 1920s murder mystery where you can expect “total mayhem and guaranteed laughter in this Olivier Award-winning comedy about a play within a play.”

  • Get tickets to the Found Festival (various locations)

    • Found Festival, Edmonton’s celebration of art in unexpected places, returns this week July 4-7, with local, regional, and national artists performing, well, art in unexpected places! lol From parks to roads to museums and more!

  • Soak up history and innovation at the Historic Festival and Doors Open

    • Starting Sunday July 7 through to July 14 is the 28th annual Historic Festival & Doors Open Edmonton, where community arts and heritage organizations, historic places and corporate partners from around Edmonton offer unique free & ticketed tours or events under the 2024 theme “Innovation.”

Food to Try This Week!

Eats this week: Korean egg sandwiches, Chinatown ice cream, pretzels and more!
  • Try a local burger for Downtown YEG Burgerfest! (various locations)

  • Try the pretzels from Das Bretzelhaus (12042 107 Ave.)

    • This week, subscriber Lauren E. sends this glowing recommendation for Das Bretzelhaus, who are not having the busiest time. I’ve ordered from here in past as well an have always enjoyed my pretzels! Here’s what Lauren shared:

      • “My partner and I love Das Bretzelhaus. He goes to get one every Friday and today found out that times are hard for them. Really hard. Apparently they started off really well but business has been slow, partly because of the lack of foot traffic in the area. Would you be able to put in a good word to help save this business? Their pretzels are unreal and they deserve some love. Their Montreal smoked meat one is to diiiie for!”

  • Visit El Fogon a few more times before they close (8026 118 Ave.)

    • I’m super sad to hear that Venezuelan restaurant El Fogon is closing permanently after July 28. This family-owned eatery made amazing arepas (like a Venezuelan version of baos) with this killer green pepper sauce. They will be so missed. Making my plans to attend before they close!

  • Celebrate Woodshed Burgers 5-year anniversary (various locations)

    • Congratulations to Woodshed Burgers on your 5-year anniversary! The restaurant—which specializes in hand-smashed burgers ground fresh daily, and prepared to order—had some burger promos on Tuesday but even if you missed it, definitely worth popping in for burgers and milkshakes at either their 124 Street, Cameron Heights west or Ellwood south Edmonton locations.

  • Order up Korean-style egg sandos at Tealicious Blend (11 St Anne St., St. Albert)

    • While in St. Albert over the weekend I had to pop into Tealicious Blend for a Korean-style egg sandwich fix. These are BIG, delicious, saucey, buttery brioche thiccc toast sandwiches with your choice of filling, plus bubble tea, as their restaurant name indicates🧋! Can’t not order a Spam & Egg but they have lots of other flavours to choose from including my friend who ordered Spicy Beef Bulgogi, and I got a Meat Lovers to take home for Mike.

  • Check out Chinatown’s first ice cream shop Little Bon Bon! (9660 106 Ave.)

    • Congratulations to Ailynn and Jason of Yelo’d Ice Cream & Bake Shoppe, on the opening of their latest ice cream venture—Little Bon Bon in Chinatown! The beautiful space with a mahjong-piece inspired wall menu will carry flavours exclusive to the Chinatown location. Check out my friend Sharon’s feature on the rich Chinatown history connected to the shop/owners. And go!! I am as hopeful for the vibrant Chinatown that Jason & Ailynn envision as well—and excited for how their ice cream shop will contribute to that.

    • As a side note, this is literally steps away (around the corner) from my parents restaurant King Noodle House Pho Hoang, so consider going for soup then ice cream! lol

  • And here’s a few food events you may be interested in…
