One of the largest and longest-running children’s festivals in North America—the International Children’s Festival of the Arts—returns this weekend May 30 – June 2 in St. Albert!
The International Children’s Festival of the Arts brings the best in children’s arts and cultural experiences and includes both FREE and ticketed arts experiences.
I’m so excited to bring Benjimin to the festival’s Toddler Town, a community-inspired munchkin metropolis that’s a one-stop shop for storytelling, musical performances, crafts, self-guided sensory bins and an active fun zone. There’s so much fun arts and crafts, plus roving performers, an outdoor stage, a kid sized maze and more! Fun for the whole family. There’s also Grown-ups Only after-hours festival activities where you can eat, drink, and enjoy performances!

Consider these smaller events around town
Good Goods Company is hosting a ‘Hello Summer’ event at their store (10250 106 St.) on Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring woman-owned businesses I Love the Moon, In Her Words Bookshop and Kindred Pots (possibly more details to come).

The 9th Street Players present Agatha Christie’s play “The Mousetrap” on Saturday, June 1, featuring a plot full of twists and turns, keeping you guessing until the very end.
And here’s a few more ideas for the families…
You can get half off admission to the West Edmonton Mall World Water Park on Friday, May 31. It will also be limited capacity so hardly any line-ups!
The City of Edmonton’s Movies on the Square (Churchill Square) is back! Catch upcoming shows June 5, 12 and 19.
PLUS: my early to-do picks for next week:
Plan to check out the Van bLoc Party on both Saturday and Sunday June 8 and 9. It’s promising to be a weekend of fun in Chinatown with beer gardens, live music, local artists, food, vendors—family-friendly, free admission.
Plan to attend the Fancy Women Bike Ride 2024! The 4th annual ride in Edmonton is Sunday, June 9 and starts at Edmonton City Hall for photo ops before you depart. FREE to participate. I recommend renting e-bikes from Pedego Edmonton to make the ride super smooth too.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week!
Try elevated Indigenous cuisine at Bernadette’s (10114 104 St.)
Bernadette’s is now open, offering Indigenous lunch and dinner in downtown Edmonton! From the talented Chef Scott Iserhoff of the former Pei Pei Chei Ow, Bernadette’s is an ode to Iserhoff’s grandmother, and as my friend Sharon writes for Taproot Edmonton, “Bernadette’s seeks to change perceptions about Indigenous food and ingredients.” My friend Diane went and loved it (try the pear sage sour drink and I’ve got my eye on the spam pop!) though Diane notes it’s not cheap eats.
Celebrate MEAT’s 10-year anniversary (8216 104 St.)
Your favourite local BBQ spot MEAT is celebrating 10 years in business and invite you to join them Thursday, May 30 with a one-day only specialty menu of some of their greatest hits (plus live music starting at 5 p.m.) I’ve always had an excellent Smoked Texas Style BBQ meal here. Their summer strawberry shortcake feature dessert also looks so good!
Go for lunch at Biera (9570 76 Ave.)
Biera in Ritchie is now open for lunch! From 11 am. to 2 p.m., Tuesday to Friday, the award-winning kitchen team will serve a lunch menu featuring salads, sandwiches, and some main plates (lettuce wraps and steak!) Yum.
Hit the patio at The Marc—now under new ownership (9940 106 St.)
Known for its delicious French cuisine and warm hospitality, after thirteen years, The Marc was recently sold to Scott and Jillian of The Butternut Tree and their patio is now open for the summer! It’s first come first serve on this beautiful patio and might be a great excuse to check out the new ownership.
Speaking of patios… you’ve got to check out Dolly’s! (9902 109 St.)
I was just on the Dolly’s Cocktail Bar patio last week for an Edmonton Cat Festival event and was reminded of just how awesome this patio is. The colourful lanterns, pink decor, fire pits, vibes, FOOD AND DRINK! Such a great place inside and out. If you haven’t been yet, go. And get empanadas!!
Grab some Lore at your Door (Lore Pizza, 17850 106A Ave.)
Starting Thursday, May 30, the fine folks at Lore Pizza are launching their ground-up, in-house, awesome delivery service bringing Lore to your Door initially in west Edmonton before expanding out. You can also get delivery from their sister brewery – Trial & Ale Brewing Company!
And here’s a few food events you may be interested in…
Pal’s and Revel Bartending are hosting a Patio Season Party on Tuesday, May 28.

From the Blog Vault
Around this time in 2017 I released my Guide to Dog (Pet)-Friendly Patios in Edmonton and although I can’t actually prove it (lol), I do think based on how popular and widely used it became (and still is each summer), along with the increased demand / requests for dog-friendly patios, that the guide contributed to Alberta Health Services changing their rules around how restaurants can make their patios dog-friendly. 😊 Anyway, this will need a 2024 updates so if you have new patios to report for the guide, please let me know! In the meantime, you can check out the guide with July 2023 updates at the link below.
