Go on my NEW, FREE, self-guided Instagrammable Downtown Edmonton tour through the Story City App!
Thrilled to share that I’ve been working with Story City, a local app that brings city streets and projects to life with walkable adventures and my project, a NEW, FREE self-guided Instagrammable Downtown Edmonton tour featuring locally-created art + food is now LIVE on the Story City app!
The tour features both an EAST Downtown Route and a WEST Downtown Route (and this doesn’t even cover ALL the possible Instagrammable art but I had to curate and condense so it wasn’t too long a tour lol), with lots of information about the art, artists, businesses and area for each stop—along with some of my photo tips to help capture those Instagrammable moments, audio clips from some featured artists, behind-the-scenes videos, and links to learn more and follow artists for each stop.
Each route is designed to take approximately 2 hours (but longer if you plan to stop and eat at one of the suggested Instagrammable food stops). The tour activates once you’re in the starting location (Alex Decoteau Park).
This self-guided digital tour experience is a really fun, easy, and FREE way to explore Downtown Edmonton this summer—launched just ahead of the long weekend, that builds off of my Instagrammable Wall Walks + Food Crawls I’ve been offering since 2017!! I hope you enjoy it!
PLUS: My Early Event Pick for Next Weekend…
I hope you’ll plan to attend the 10-year anniversary pawty of the Edmonton International Cat Festival, Alberta’s biggest and Canada’s longest-running cat festival that I founded back in 2014 and now put on with an ameowzing team volunteer Cat Festival Committee. The big event takes place on Caturday, May 25 at MacEwan Robbins Health Learning Centre in Downtown Edmonton (10910 104 Ave.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 100% proceeds of donated to local rescues. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and Kids 12 and under are FREE. There are a ton of CATivities and PURRgramming (seriously, so meowch), for cat lovers to enjoy. Celebrate cats, cat culture and cat people while raising $ for cat rescues! There’s also celebrity cat guests!!! lol. And a few events leading up to the festival too.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week
Don’t miss the Asian Heritage Month Food Truck Extravaganza (9912 72 Ave.)
Sosyal Scoops (the amazing folks behind Yelo’d Ice Cream & Bake Shoppe!) are hosting their second annual Asian Food Truck event to celebrate Asian Heritage Month this Saturday, May 18 from 4-9 p.m. at 9912 72 Avenue.
Try the great lunch + kids special at Gyu-Kaku BBQ (10416 Jasper Ave.)
Shout out to @edmontondotfamily for sharing about the $7 kids meal at the always delicious Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ. Their weekday lunch special is $15.99 for two meals + add $7 for the great kids combo. Even if you don’t do the kids combo, that lunch deal is great!
Head out to ICE District and downtown restaurants to cheer on the Oilers!
The Edmonton Oilers are still in the Stanley Cup Playoffs so if you’ve yet to experience the amazing energy of a playoff run in downtown Edmonton, Thursday May 16 night may be your last chance (lol just kidding they’re going all the way to the Cup baby!) or May 18 for watch parties as they play again in Vancouver. Lots of great restaurants along 104 St. to check out before or as part of your Oilers watch party / celebrations, I am partial to CQ Noodle as a before-game option, Baijiu, Fu’s Repair Shop or Dorinku Osaka for incomparable vibes, Tzin for their bacon, Cavern for their cheese (and chips with raclette cheese on top!) and more! Browse the Downtown Business Association restaurant listings for more suggestions.
Check out local bars recognized in Canada’s Best Bars 2024
The annual Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants 2024 list is out—and while no Edmonton restaurants made that list officially (weeps), three Edmonton spots did make the Best Bars 2024 list including Clementine, Bar Bricco and Baijiu & Little Hong Kong (I mean technically I consider these all restaurants as well lol). Congratulations to them! Give them a visit if you haven’t (vibes, food, drinks—excellent!) and hopefully more Edmonton restaurants get some love next year.
Try an Onigiri rice sandwich from the new Okinawa Onigiri (10011 102 Ave.)
There’s a new onigiri (rice and seaweed Japanese-style sandwich) shop in downtown Edmonton—Okinawa Onigiri! They’re currently in soft open mode and my friend Sharon and I popped in for lunch this week. It’s a super cute space (with Instagrammable flower wall that owner Thomas painted himself!) a ton of surf boards (inspired by Okinawa surf culture), and a small but tasty menu of Onigiri (with rice, spam—the best!, egg, lettuce, and nori seaweed wrap). Depending on which you order you may get extra spam, extra cheese, kimchi, or they said they’ll launch a fish filling too. I love onigiri! This place is really cute. It’s a bit difficult to get to if you aren’t working / living / walking around downtown already but obviously doable. Loved my classic (one spam lol) and double spam that I ordered. My feedback I shared direct with owner Thomas was maybe a bit more sauce on the spam so I look forward to coming back and seeing if that’s been implemented lol. For their opening they’re asking customers to write well wishes on little surf boards to hang on their wall! Try to find my yellow one. Enjoy!
