Head to Clarke Stadium on Saturday, May 11 between 1-10 p.m. for the 40th Annual Ben Calf Robe Traditional Pow Wow! Grand entries are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. (so those are good times to be around for!) The Pow Wow is an exciting, family-friendly, FREE gathering to celebrate Indigenous people’s rich traditions, history, and culture. Experience a showcase of Métis artistic expression and excellence on Saturday, May 11 (10 am – 5 pm) at the Spring Métis Market found throughout the upper level of Kingsway Mall. There will be Métis artists and artisan booths featuring handcrafted beadwork, moccasins, skincare, jewelry, and more!
Spin the Wheel of Fortune LIVE! (River Cree Resort & Casino)
This always looks like so much fun—Wheel of Fortune Live takes place this Friday, May 10 as an interactive, theatrical experience where guests are randomly selected to go on stage and step into the game show (including spinning a full-sized replica of the iconic wheel!)
Get glam and experience the Art on the Block fundraiser (Art Gallery of Alberta)
Art on the Block, the Art Gallery of Alberta’s largest fundraising event and one of the city’s most unique social gatherings supporting local artists, makers and businesses, is this Friday, May 10. Outbid the competition and take home stunning, original works of art donated by some of the most recognized visual artists in the province—plus one-of-a-kind experiences and packages featuring local businesses and makers.
Take in some non-fiction films at NorthwestFest (Metro Cinema, 9712 109 St.)
NorthwestFest—Canada’s longest-running non-fiction film festival—kicks off this week May 9 until May 15, featuring the best in non-fiction, music and documentary filmmaking. Check out the full film line-up and get tickets!
Check out Dinos & Drink! (TELUS World of Science)
The TELUS World of Science‘s monthly adults-only event is dinosaur themed—Dinos & Drinks invites you to sip, mingle and journey back in time to the Mesozoic Era as part of its Dinosaurs: The Exhibition. It takes place on Saturday, May 11 and there are still a few tickets left!
Here’s a few Mother’s Day events that aren’t just about food:
I think this Hits of Broadway: Celebrating Motherhood show at The Citadel Theatre sounds really nice—a concert of Broadway’s greatest hits celebrating maternal figures. Shows run May 9-12.
Celebrate Mother’s Day at the 10th Annual Garden Party at FARRM Animal Sanctuary on May 11—also coinciding with the season launch of their greenhouse.
It would be amazing if you popped into Plum Home + Design (12021 102 Ave.) and grabbed a custom I LOVE THE MOON Mother’s Day portrait by Mabel. She is so talented! And she’ll be at Plum on May 11. Pick a time slot in advance.
Color Cafe is doing a Mother’s Day Pottery Wheel Workshop on May 12—no experience necessary!
Also stay tuned: next week I’m giving away tickets to the Dinosaurs Exhibition + Superhuman Body IMAX show at the TELUS World of Science in next Wednesday, May 15’s email! This giveaway is only for newsletter subscribers. Tell a friend to subscribe for a chance to enter to win (and also get curated recommendations for things to do, eat and know each week!)

Food to Try This Week
Try the new Corpuz Bakeshop (11812 86 St. Alberta Avenue)
Well they’re not technically new because they’ve been a vendor at the Bountiful Farmers’ Market—but Corpuz Bakeshop now has their very own location along Alberta Avenue! As their new sign suggests, pop in here for coffee, breads, snacks, and their famous premium handcrafted Brioche donuts with six different fillings to choose from. Find their hours in this post (note: they sell out a lot!)
Check out the grand opening of Odd Burger (336A Mayfield Common)
Odd Burger – Vegan Fast Food restaurant is holding their grand opening event in west Edmonton this Saturday, May 11 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Odd Burger is described as a 100% Vegan company creating accessible and delicious plant-based foods from scratch.
Try the new summer menu from Dagu Rice Noodle (10408 Jasper Ave.)
One of my favourite spots in town, Dagu Rice Noodle, has just released their new summer menu! It includes a few cold noodle options, chicken salad, pan-fried pork belly, fruit slushes, milk slush dessert bowls and more. I’ve been invited to try it today (check my Stories for some recommendations!) but lol honestly maybe planning to also order my go-to Sour & Spicy Crossing the Bridge Noodle Soup there too, hehe.
Check out the grand opening of L’OCA Quality Market (340 Baseline Rd.)
In Sherwood Park, L’OCA Quality Market is set to open Friday, May 10. This is a MASSIVE new grocery store featuring two restaurants, an in-store butcher, bakery, gelato and coffee shop, bookable events space, and so much more. I was invited to a media preview over the weekend and was stunned by the sheer size and quality of everything. They are going to open a second L’OCA in west Edmonton in 2025, and also have a third location coming that year too. Worth a visit out to try! They are also locally owned, which is nice.
Here’s some upcoming Asian Heritage Month culinary events…
