Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: events to mark International Women’s Day, arts and beer festivals, and more!

Mark International Women’s Day this March 8 (and also you know, support women and build a more equitable world year-round lol).

  • Check out the final Winter City Weekend (City Hall Rink / Churchill Square)

  • Edmonton Craft Beer Festival returns this weekend (Edmonton Expo Centre)

    • Get tickets to the Edmonton Craft Beer Festival, which runs this weekend March 8 & 9. The event features more than 150 breweries, distilleries, cideries, meaderies, ready-to-drink beverages you can get tickets to sample, plus food from 20+ local pubs, restaurants, and eateries.

  • Catch the final weekend of SOUND OFF Festival (Fringe Arts Barn / online)

    • SOUND OFF is Canada’s national festival dedicated to Deaf performing arts. Performances run until March 10 SOUND OFF featuring Deaf artists from across the country sharing stories and the beauty of American Sign Language on stage.

  • Get tickets to the Country Music Alberta Awards (Edmonton Convention Centre)

  • Shop the Dovercourt Makers & Vintage Market (13510 Dovercourt Ave.)

    • My friend Sharman is part of the Dovercourt Makers & Vintage Market taking place this Saturday, March 9 with more than 20 vendors , vintage clothing, housewares, accessories, knick knacks, local artisans, bakers, free entry + parking!

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: burger and fries, steamed buns, 4-ft long pressed sushi and more!
  • Try the new menu at GRAVY Burger and Fries (10933 120 St.)

    • GRAVY Burger and Fries has a new menu! Find burgers, poutines, chicken, hot dogs, hot brunch and some sides + sweets at this hip space serving delicious bites. The new Big Breakfast Poutine is calling to me (I am curious about the HUGE size portion). And they have new vegan substitutions. GRAVY is home to Edmonton’s only fresh ground brisket burger!

  • Try the new brunch menu at Boxer Albertan Kitchen + Bar (10315 83 Ave.)

  • Check out the Steamed Bun Festival at TNT (various locations)

    • Calling all steamed bun lovers! On now until March 14 is the ‘Steamed Bun Festival’ at TNT Supermarket where the TNT kitchen is preparing steamed buns you can only get during the festival, including Black Fungus and Daylily Steamed Bun, Pork and Seafood Steamed Bun, Riversnail Flavoured Vermicelli Steamed Bun (?!), Banana Steamed Bun (it looks very adorable), and apparently much more.

  • Make your way through The Tomato’s Top 100 foods list (various locations)

    • I am never sure why Edify and The Tomato release their annual food lists on literally the exact same week every year (lol), but as I suggested you try some of the 2024 Edify Best Restaurants last week, this week you should check out some of the 100 popular local foods to make The Tomato’s 2024 Top 100 Foods list. Lots of great bites I love and many that I have also yet to try.

  • Order the Pressed Sushi Bridge at Dorinku Tokyo / Osaka (Whyte Ave. / DT)

    • My friends and I shared the impressive Pressed Sushi Bridge at Dorinku Tokyo this week and loved it! The presentation is obviously incredible (it just kept going and going when the server brought it to the table), And I have always been a huge fan of the Dorinku family’s pressed sushi offerings (they also do pressed sushi at Japonais Bistro!) Imagine a shotski but with 5 types of pressed sushi lol. Share as an appetizer or maybe you want to crush it on your end or for a date lol.

  • Try the cool new winter patio from Baijiu (10359 104 St.)

    • Baijiu’s summer patio is an amazing vibe so it makes sense their new winter patio “tunnel” would feel really cool too. The first in North America Tubbo winter patio structure is open every night and weekends with limited reservations (mostly first come first serve). Always a big fan of the bao selection at Baijiu! We also had an excellent steak and Dan Dan noodles during our visit this week. Baijiu has fantastic cocktails too, and while no dedicated non-alcoholic / mocktail menu (sad face), the bartenders are able to whip up a nice non-alc drink if you share your preferences (always sweet, fruity and cute for me! lol)

  • Here’s some food events and deals you might be interested in…

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

Small Business Spotlight

This week I wanted to highlight local Edmonton photographer Vintage Duck Photography, a woman-owned business (Jessica) who specializes in newborn, baby, kids, and maternity photos. Her photos are so crisp and so clean and I love how minimal they are. She took Benjimin’s amazing newborn photos and we just took him back ahead of his one-year birthday (the teasers we’ve seen have looked INCREDIBLE!) Ask Jessica about her Milestone package where you get newborn, six-month and one-year sets and I think that would be so good to gift to an upcoming new parent in your life (or to yourself if you are that parent!)

From the Blog Vault

This March 2024 is my five-year anniversary of going full-time as a blogger / content creator and social media strategist / owner of Linda Hoang Digital Corp, so here’s a throwback to my March 2019 blog post announcing the career milestone. I am super grateful to all of my clients past and current, and for all of YOU! for being part of a community that allows me to continue sharing what I love (food, travel, life recommendations) for a living. It’s been quite a few years and there’s still lots of learning, and lots I’d like to do (I need more help, I need more time, I need Benjimin to go to daycare, probably, lol) but I’m quite proud of where I’m at and also think I’m doing a better job saying ‘no’ compared to 5-years ago Linda.

READ THE BLOG

Usually in the International Women’s Day edition of the newsletter I also throwback to old IWD blog posts I’ve done and sometimes share a new one (but I had no time to do a new one this year lol). So do check out a few of my old shop local, women-owned businesses, artists, makers, etc. guides from past years (though note some entries are not up to date!) In general, a very easy thing to do for IWD (and year-round) is to try and go out of your way to support women and person-of-colour-owned businesses as statistically, it’s a lot harder for them to find success due to the patriarchal systems in place worldwide. Today, women earn anywhere from 84 to 90 cents to every dollar a man gets depending on the source you look at, which hasn’t changed *much* in the last two decades, among other sobering statistics about the challenges women face in almost all aspects of life compared to their male counterparts.
