Things to Do This Week
It’s Family Day Long Weekend! Here’s a few activities:
Check out this great list of Family Day activities from the City of Edmonton, including the Winspear Centre, Art Gallery of Alberta, Stanley A. Milner Library, Churchill Square, ICE District and more!
You can also still get tickets to Gershwin’s Magic Key Family Day Weekend Special at the Winspear Centre.
There’s still some FREE admission slots at the Royal Alberta Museum for Family Day on Monday, Feb. 19! Snatch them up before they’re gone.
You can find a bunch of free indoor Family Day activities at the Alberta Legislature on Monday, Feb. 19.
There are Family Day Events happening in Leduc, Beaumont, St. Albert.
Family Fishing Weekend is Feb 17-19. Try fishing in lakes, rivers, or streams—no license is required, just for the weekend! (just not in National Parks, and as always fishing regulations still apply lol).
Speaking of fishing, Kids Can Catch events are happening at Wabamun Lake and Pigeon Lake this weekend (both very close to Edmonton!) These events include pre-drilled holes, loaner fishing rods, and no fishing licences required as part of Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekend.
Metis Crossing also has some Family Day weekend specials happening.
Plus: check out the last weekend of Silver Skate Festival (Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park)
Silver Skate Festival, Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival wraps up after Family Day Monday Feb. 19, and weekends are the best time to experience all the programming! I recommend you visit on Saturday or Sunday, from 4 p.m. onwards. Then you’ll get a bit of day and night fun—and be able to catch the festival’s famous Fire Sculpture Burn!
I do event social media for the festival and am giving away a prize pack over on my Facebook or Instagram!
A few other events that caught my eye this weekend:
There’s a Silent Headphone Party at The New Amaleena this Saturday, Feb. 17. I’ve always wondered what silent headphone parties would be like (it seems super fun!) Three different channels of music to choose from.
Catch the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup in Edmonton this weekend Feb. 17 & 18 at ICE District.
A Sing-Along Moana show is being held at The Metro Cinema / Garneau Theatre this Sunday, Feb. 18. LOVE the songs from Moana. This is cute!
Here are a few more Black History / Futures Month activities!
“A Celebration of Black Love” event is on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Mali’s Art Studio is doing two Black History Month-themed Paint N Sips this weekend and next.
Cultural Youth Initiative is putting on some Black History Month events on Feb. 17 and 24.
5 Artists 1 Love is a Black History Month celebration that honours the creative vibrancy within Edmonton’s Black communities. The exhibit featuring Black artists is at the Art Gallery exhibit until March 3.
MacEwan University has a lot of events lined up throughout February including a Ribbon Rogue Art Piece, Stories of Belonging, an anti-racism presentation on Unpacking the N-Word, and more.
The official screening of The Book of S.H.E. documentary in celebration of Black History Month takes place at the TELUS World of Science IMAX Theatre on Feb. 29.
Also: Happy Valentine’s day! I worked with The Rec Room to promote their Valentine’s Comedy Show happening tonight if you need a last minute plan.
PLUS: Get tickets to Leonard and Joni: The Untold Love Story!
This is still aways away but my friend Graham is organizing this sure to be great show at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on April 4 – Leonard and Joni: The Untold Love Story! It was a brief romance that influenced some of the most celebrated songs ever written (like “Hallelujah!”)
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Check out the Sweet Treats & Latte Festival (various locations)
Sweet Treats & Latte Festival in Old Strathcona is back! Plan your sweet tooth tour—choose from 21 businesses in the neighbourhood offering feature desserts / drinks until Feb 25.
Experience Daniel Costa’s new Bar Henry (10220 103 Ave.)
Chef Daniel Costa’s Italian empire is growing (love Uccellino!) with the opening of Bar Henry, an aperitivo bar located inside Henry Singer in ICE District. Aperitivo is Italian for your pre-meal drink They’re serving cocktails, vino and snacks 4:30-11 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, no reservations, daytime hours coming soon. You know it’s going to be good.
Order the pork belly from Flipside BBQ Food Truck (various locations)
I tried the pork belly rice dish from Flipside BBQ Food Truck last weekend and it was SOOOOO good. They’ll be serving at the Silver Skate Festival this weekend Feb 16-19. You can also order them for events—and generally just FOLLOW WHERE THEY GO because the food is really good.
Try the new Delavoye Chocolate (10639 124 St.)
Thanks to subscriber Kathleen for sending in this recommendation!
“Delavoye Chocolate has opened up in the refurbished old brick building on the SE corner of 124 Street and 107 Ave. This place is amazing. The hot chocolate and the European chocolate drinks are out of this world delicious. They roast their own cocoa beans and make delectable bars of chocolate with different intensities of cocoa butter. Great atmosphere. Wonderful place run by lovely people with top quality product!”
Head out to Nonnie’s Grill (2 22106 South Cooking Lake Rd, / Sherwood Park)
Thanks to Facebook follower Angela for sending in this recommendation—looks like a rural restaurant south of Sherwood Park at risk of closure…
“Would you consider visiting Nonnie’s Grill & Artisan Shop? I saw they are trying to raise donations and are now opening on Sundays to stay afloat. I read the bio and she invested her retirement savings into this venture and wants to give back to the community as well. I want to try their cinnamon buns that are only available on Sundays!” Note: I haven’t tried it yet so I can’t vouch for it but wanted to share as an option!
Go for some BACON from Tzin (10115 104 St.)
I saw Tzin post a Valentine’s Day card featuring their famous BACON dish and it just reminded me how amazing that dish (and others, and their drinks) are. If you’ve never been, I think you’d love it! Note: it’s a very teeny space.
