Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: Lunar New Year events, Black History / Futures Month activities, Flying Canoe Volant Festival and more!

Plan to celebrate Family Day weekend at the Winspear Centre!

Get tickets to Gershwin’s Magic Key, a theatrical symphony concert for the whole family at the Winspear Centre during Family Day weekend.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, step into the streets of 1920s New York City, where a newspaper boy has a chance encounter with the famous composer, George Gershwin.

Classical Kids Live! presents this theatrical production featuring your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, with ESO Resident Conductor Cosette Justo Valdés at the podium. Learn about and be entertained by the extraordinary life and musical masterpieces of one of the greatest American composers of all time!

Gershwin’s most enduring pieces of music are magically woven into a dramatic story as two actors share anecdotes and observations based on true stories from the iconic composer. This show is “far and away the best for introducing children to classical music!” 🎶🎵🎶

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: Food from Black-owned restaurants, fresh seafood at Japonais Windermere, and corn dogs + smashburgers from The Butchery by RGE RD!
  • Experience Black-owned restaurants for Feed the Soul Dining Week

  • Check out the new lunch menu at The Butchery by RGE RD (12229 107 Ave.)

  • Try some delicious features at Japonais Windermere (6138 Currents Dr.)

    • Mike and I were invited to try a few feature menu items from Japonais Windermere and everything was so good! If you haven’t yet been to the southside expansion of one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city, make a reso! And get that Japonais Ceviche and Surf & Turf Tartare!! The Pressed Platter is a holdover from the holidays and not on the menu anymore but you can still ask for it (5 types of pressed sushi—it’s a lot lol).

  • Head to Fu’s Repair Shop’s Swine & Dine (special menu!) (10524 Jasper Ave.)

    • One of my favs, Fu’s Repair Shop is the latest local restaurant to host a Swine & Dine (pork-themed) menu / event in partnership with Passion for Pork happening TODAY (Wed Jan 31).

    • “Swine and Dine through the Chinese provinces” Sichuan, Shandong, Guangdong and Hunan. The four-course meal is served family style, feeding 2-3 people with a set menu price of $68.88 (quite a good deal!) You’re asked to make a reso but since you might be reading about this for the first time today, they do hold some tables for walk-in so, spontaneous Wednesday night out!

  • Here’s some food events and deals you might be interested in…

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
