Things to Do This Week
-
This week’s ‘to-do’ theme is all about local ART (and K-pop! lol)
-
Attend the DIMENSIONS Opening Reception at The Roxy Theatre (10708 124 St), where one of my favourite local artists Josh Harnack will be one of three artists involved in a new exhibit which begins with an Opening Reception on Thursday, Jan. 25. “This unique exhibition brings together the work of three distinct Alberta based artists using colour, depth and texture as well as investigating the nature of reality through an altered lens.” What’s extra cool about Josh’s pieces is that he’s purchased old oil paintings and is upcycling them! Super cool. This exhibit runs Jan. 25-Mar. 16.
-
Check out 5 Artists 1 Love at the Art Gallery of Alberta (2 Sir Winston Churchill Sq.), an annual exhibition that celebrates the artistic vibrancy and range of Edmonton’s African-Canadian communities, from Angola to Zanzibar, Togo to Tobago, or Brazil to Barbados! This exhibit promotes emerging and established artists to develop global African arts and cultures and celebrate African-Canadian brilliance, now in its 18th year! This exhibit runs Jan. 20-Mar. 3.
-
Experience -miut at The Mitchell Art Gallery (MacEwan, 11110 104 Ave.), an exhibit that considers what it means to be an Inuk living in Treaty 6 and 7. “The suffix “-miut” is found in Inuit languages across dialects, a word modifier meaning “people of” when attached to a place name. This identifier subverts constructed lines between people and land. Belonging to place is embedded in what it means to be Inuk. This exhibit runs Jan. 19-Mar. 28.
-
-
Also at MacEwan: ‘Lawma Mia!’ (Triffo Theatre, MacEwan, 11110 104 Ave.)
-
A 28-year University of Alberta law student tradition continues this Friday, Jan. 26 with a performance of ‘Lawma Mia!’ a parody on the 2008 Mamma Mia! film, featuring law student performers!
-
-
Drum and Paint at The Pint off Whyte (8032 104 St.)
-
I’ve just learned about this twist on Paint Nights— ‘Drum and Paint!’ taking place on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at The Pint on Whyte, where you paint while DJs / artists within the Northern Alberta Drum and Bass Community perform. So it’s going to be quite a vibe!
-
-
Also at The Pint this week: a K-Pop Dance Party! (The Pint off Whyte)
-
“The Pint goes K-Pop” this Friday, Jan. 26 starting at 10 p.m., with the DJ playing BTS, PSY, and other Korean pop dance hits, plus they’re slinging Soju!
-
-
And don’t miss A Night of K-Pop drag show! (CO*LAB 9641 102A Ave.)
-
The RGGs present A Night of K-Pop on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 9 p.m. “Darlings, prepare yourselves for a dazzling fusion of fierce glamour and K-pop magic! Get ready to sashay into a world where the runway meets the rhythm, as our fabulous local entertainers serve you a sensational K-pop drag show extravaganza! From the chart-topping anthems of legendary K-pop groups to the hidden gems of the scene, we’ve got it all, honey.”
-
-
Explore a huge Star Wars memorabilia collection (Southgate Centre, 5015 111 St.)
-
Unofficial Galaxies, one of the largest private single collections of Star Wars Memorabilia in the world showcasing 134 exhibits in 22 scenes is now showing at Southgate Centre until Feb. 26.
-
-
And check out a Winterruption Winter Festival show (various locations)
-
Get tickets to Winterruption, Edmonton’s Winter Festival, running this wee Jan 24-28, featuring live music, comedy, drag, wrestling, podcasts and more, at various downtown Edmonton venues!
- Plus: Plan to attend a Discussion on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Profit & Non-Profit Sectors on Jan 31 presented by WAVE (Women’s Advisory Voice of Edmonton). I’ll be speaking at their March event (details TBA!)
PLAN TO ATTEND A LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION:
Londonderry Mall is having a Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year Celebration at the East Court on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 12-4 p.m. FREE to attend.
Shop a Lunar New Year Market at Edmonton City Centre on Jan 30 & Feb 1.
Kingsway Mall is hosting a Lunar New Year Festival on Feb 3, which includes art and cultural workshops! The demand was so high that pre-registrations closed but they said walk-in spots are available first come, first served.
Edmonton’s Biggest Lunar New Year Celebration will take place Feb 3-4 at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace. $2 per person (kids and seniors over 65 free).

ONGOING EVENTS / WORTH A RECURRING MENTION:

Ice District is also a great downtown location for free public skating and the FAN PARK rink will also be available for hockey/shinny.
Give ice climbing at the Edmonton Ski Club a try this winter. This is a lot of fun to do—especially if you’ve never done it! It’s very unique that you can do this without going to the mountains! They have public intro to ice climbing classes or you can book private ice times. Read my 2021 blog about this experience!
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Celebrate Red Star Pub’s 20th anniversary (10534 Jasper Ave.)
Red Star Pub in downtown Edmonton just turned 20! We just missed the anniversary week festivities (lol sometimes I find out about things too late!) but I thought it was still worth suggesting a visit or revisit to mark this huge milestone. Did you know: Red Star Pub’s menu is Italian influenced designed by Chef Daniel Costa of Corso 32 / Uccellino / Bar Bricco fame? This pub is where he started!
Check out the NEW Transcend Coffee Pop-up Location (10639 124 St.)
Transcend Coffee’s new 124 Street location is still under construction but they have a NEW pop-up location and will be hosting Saturday Markets in the space over the next four Saturdays (Jan. 27, Feb 3, 10, and 17).
Catch Dorinku Tokyo’s $10 Ramen Lunch Special (10205 82 Ave.)
Dorinku Tokyo is offering $10 Ramen as a January Lunch Special (dine-in only). The deal is only available until the end of the month so do take advantage! With the money you save on ramen, do order their pressed salmon sushi, it’s awesome, lol. Another deal worth checking out is their $10 Happy Hour Box with an assortment of izakaya favourites. Yum yum.
Grab a bite at Pei Pei Chei Ow before they close (11051 97 St.)
Eep, amazing Indigenous restaurant Pei Pei Chei Ow is closing Feb. 1. Go try a berry brisket sandwich before it’s too late. They did catering + events before they opened the restaurant location so this shouldn’t be the last of them but still sad to see another brick & mortar shop go.
Get tickets to Rapid Fire Theatre’s Battle Kitchen (10437 83 Ave.)
Everyone’s favourite local improv group Rapid Fire Theatre have started doing Battle Kitchen, where “two of the finest comedians/home chefs Chris Borger and Gordie Lucius battle for who is chef supreme in this live cooking championship! There will be food challenges, mystery ingredients, and a panel of menacing judges.” This is a recurring event, with the next dates this weekend Thurs, Fri or Sat, Jan 25, 26 or 27.
Don’t miss the last few days of Chinatown Dining Week (various locations)
The seventh Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week is on until this Sunday Jan 28 featuring 24 restaurants offering $10 and/or $20 food deals to encourage you to come visit! The food is so good. Check the menus, pick your places, plan to explore and support Chinatown this week!
