Climb an Ice Wall in downtown Edmonton! (9613 96 Ave.)
Ice climbing is back at the Edmonton Ski Club in downtown Edmonton! This is a lot of fun to do—especially if you’ve never done it! They have public intro to ice climbing classes or you can book private ice times. I blogged about this awesome ice wall experience back when it opened in 2021.
Watch the Banff Mountain Film Festival (Metro Cinema, 8712 109 St.)
Track ‘N Trail presents the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at Metro Cinema this weekend Jan. 19-21. “Featuring mountain sports and culture, with eight different short films in each program, the Banff World Tour consistently leaves audiences breathless and inspired.”
Experience Esperenza: Concert + Fiesta (10086 Macdonald Dr.)
Get tickets to Esperenza by flamenco-fusion guitarist David Jay and friends, featuring instrumentalists, singers, bands, dancers and a 70-person choir on Saturday, Jan. 20 at McDougall United Church. After the concert, an Early Bird ‘Fiesta’ with homemade Mexican cuisine (from the musician’s mother!)
Here’s two markets you could check out this weekend:
The Market at Manchester Square will feature an All Things Disney-themed market this Saturday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. FREE to attend. And free coffee for the first 20 customers from Rhubarb Cafe & Cocktails.

Food to Try This Week
Experience Chinatown Dining Week (various locations)
The seventh Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week returns this Jan. 18-28 featuring 24 restaurants (the most participants they’ve ever had!) offering $10 and/or $20 food deals to encourage you to come visit! The food is so good. I’ve been previewing some of the participating restaurants on TikTok including RJ Tasty Bites, Gui Lin Noodle House and Liuyishou Hot Pot. Check the menus, pick your places, plan to explore and support Chinatown this week!
I want to also specifically call out Padmanadi as a place you might want to extra support in the Chinatown area—they are always so giving in the community and last week during the freezing temps distributed 150+ meals + coffee to their houseless neighbours.
Celebrate Careit Deli’s 15-year anniversary! (9672 142 St.)
Go for fried chicken at Northern Chicken (10184 104 St.)
Northern Chicken recently shut down its 124 St. location but their 104 St. location is still operating and on Wednesdays it’s $2.42 pieces all day + $1 off pints. Go for a revisit if it’s been awhile or try them for the first time! Edify has a story about the closure and the potential closures that may be coming for many businesses as they look to repay pandemic loans…
Try Tatsu—the latest All You Can Eat Sushi + KBBQ spot (10163 109 St.)
Tatsu Sushi and BBQ is the newest All You Can Eat Sushi entry in the city. There is no per person limit on sashimi where, and they also offer Korean BBQ, both of which sets it apart from other AYCE spots! We really enjoyed our meal. Good nigiri options (including chop chop / toro). Their rolls are quite tasty (try the two mango roll options!) Tatsu has dessert buns, taiyaki, and green tea matcha ice cream included in your all you can eat price too. I liked their phone/online ordering system (paperless feels good)—and servers were pretty accommodating / knowledgable about what items were gluten-free for my celiac friend (including the seared salmon, beef or saba—just note gluten-free so they avoid adding sauce to it). At $40/per person, this is very good all you can eat value / variety / quality! The main ‘con’ for dining here was that it’s for some reason very chilly inside the building. It’s quite a large space, there’s tons of seating closer to the kitchen, but we were in the stretch of booths right by the window and door facing 109 Street so we were quite cold there lol. Reservations are recommended so you avoid a wait, but you do need a minimum party of five people to make a reservation! Enjoy!!
