Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: Bon Jovi Tribute Concert, Art Battle, Mean Girls & more!
  • Experience a night of Bon Jovi (River Cree Resort & Casino)

  • Be part of Engineering Day at the TELUS World of Science (11211 142 St.)

    • Engineering Day at the TELUS World of Science is this Saturday, Jan. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where your Science Centre Admission includes access to hands-on, interactive displays that showcase the incredible feats of human ingenuity with U of A Engineering students.

  • Check out MEAN GIRLS THE BROADWAY MUSICAL! (Jubilee Auditorium)

    • Get tickets to Broadway Across Canada’s Mean Girls, in Edmonton this week with nightly shows until Sunday, Jan. 14. It’s so fetch! (lol) I was invited to Opening/Media Night and thought it was a super fun retelling of the hilarious movie. Lots of laughs, some fun and clever sets and props, tons of energy and lessons learned! I thought Karen did a great job in particular.

  • Catch a free choir performance at City Hall (Churchill Square)

    • Chronos Vocal Ensemble is putting on Chronos in the Hall, a FREE family-friendly choir show at City Hall starting at 3 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 14.

  • Build LEGO with likeminded grownups. (Stanley A. Milner Library, 2nd floor)

    • The Edmonton Public Library is offering FREE LEGO for Adults every Sunday Jan. 14 until Feb. 25 from 11-11:45 a.m. You’re encouraged to come design and build a LEGO creation and share tips and tricks for building with others. For teens, adults and seniors.

  • Experience an Art Battle (Pure Casino Yellowhead, 12464 153 St.)

    • Art Battle Edmonton is back for another exciting live art competition this Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Pure Casino Yellowhead. Tickets get you access to the show where artists go head-t-head in a high-speed, three-round battle to create awe-inspiring artwork right before your eyes. Audiences play judge and cast votes to determine the winner.

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: smashburgers, strawberry bingsu, nut milk tea and more!
  • Celebrate Van Loc’s one-year anniversary under new ownership (10648 98 St.)

  • Check out Hanjan Korean’s NEW Whyte Ave. location! (10536 82 Ave.)

    • Hanjan, one of my favourite restaurants in the city, now has a THIRD location on Whyte Ave.! Look for the Hanjan bat signal light up sign on the ground in Old Strathcona and you’ll know you’re in the right spot lol. The former Teapsy Lab space has been split so one side does take-out bubble tea and the other is Hanjan. We dined here before Mean Girls the Musical and it was (as always) so good. I can’t not order the Bossam pork belly lettuce wraps, and I always get a soup (that night it was gamjatang a spicy pork bone soup). We also love the Banchan (unlimited side dishes) here and their Strawberry Bingsu (so good!) Congratulations on your expansion, Hanjan team!!

  • Try the smashburgers from Mr. Halal Burger (9715 137 Ave.)

    • Thanks to subscriber Kate for sending in this glowing recommendation for Mr. Halal Burger In-and-Out-inspired burgers located in north Edmonton! “Fresh, yummy, ‘smash’ style burgers made to order with their secret sauce, which I’ll know next time to get extra because it was divine. Super yummy crinkle style fries. I asked for mine well done & they were absolutely perfect. The place is clean & bright & bustling with a friendly smiling crew, honestly it was such a great experience trying somewhere new to eat & I cannot recommend the food enough. A++++++++++!”

    • I love when you share your recommendations! You can email them to me.

  • Go for some ‘Mylk’ tea at Nuttea (8204 Gateway Blvd.)

    • I revisited Nuttea in Old Strathcona last week (in the basement of the Strathcona Hotel), known for its alternative vegan (nut milk) bubble tea! Their specialty drinks use almond, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia and walnut milk, and can come with a plant-based nut cream on top that you use a mini food shovel (lol) to scoop. You can also get nut mylk smoothies, cold brew teas or fresh fruit teas.

  • Dig into casino dim sum at Cha Xpress (River Cree Resort & Casino)

    • My family used to frequent Chinese restaurant CHA for Tea on Stony Plain Road in west Edmonton alllll the time, but then they closed and we were sad. Not long after the closure though, the same owners opened Cha Xpress inside the River Cree Resort & Casino! I recently dug into dim sum there and it was just as good as I remembered. Due to the casino location, it’s now only 18+, but definitely worth a pop-in (and maybe try a slot or two lol).

  • Here’s some food events and deals you might be interested in…

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

From the Blog Vault

Around this time last year, I was sharing Everything You Need To Know Before You Go To Barbados travel guide! Barbados holds a very special place in our heart as it’s where went for our Procreation Vacation (IVF) back in 2021. The IVF didn’t work officially but we wondered if after having Unexplained Infertility for nearly a decade, if the procedure somehow ‘showed’ my body what to do and we got pregnant with our Miracle Baby Benjimin months later in 2022. We had a trip in 2022 booked to try IVF again but then we got pregnant so we treated it like a Babymoon. We can’t wait to take him to the island someday!! And if you ever decide to go, check out my Barbados content! I’ve actually still got a few video blogs / blog guides for attractions to post lol.
