Things to Do This Week

Things to do this week: ice skating, skills competitions, wagon rides & MORE!
  • Attend Winter City Weekends Ice Grooves & Swing ‘n Skate (Churchill Square)

  • Check out the Oilers Skills Competition (Rogers Place)

    • The Edmonton Oilers players will be putting their skills to the test at the annual Skills Competition at Rogers Place on Thursday, Jan 4 at 7 p.m. Challenges will test players speed, accuracy and strength. This is a family-friendly, ticketed event. Last year they even had Oilers dogs compete lol.

  • Go on a winter wagon ride (Fort Edmonton Park)

    • Okay you can’t actually do the Winter Wagon Ride at Fort Edmonton Park this weekend because it’s all sold out—in fact many dates in January are already sold out but I wanted to give you a heads up if this is something you did want to do you should browse and book a date/time NOW because it will sell out lol. There are weekend dates available until end of February.

  • Catch opening weekend of Made in Italy (Citadel Theatre)

    • The next show to play at the Citadel Theatre is called ‘Made in Italy‘—about an Italian teenager growing up in Jasper in the 1970s, caught between two worlds and determined to make his mark. This tour-de-force solo show is packed with disco, fantastic singing and a host of hilarious characters. It’s a fun, heartfelt coming of age story about a kid with the heart of Rocky Balboa and the moves (and hair!) of John Travolta. Runs Jan. 6-28.

  • Cheer on the Battle of the Bands (The Starlight Room)

    • Five MacEwan bands are going head to head in a Battle of the Bands music night held at The Starlight Room on Friday Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. The audience gets to cheer on the bands and pick a champion. Sounds fun!

  • Catch the last of the holiday lights

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: giant pizza, beautiful charcuterie, awesome ice cream and MORE!
  • Try the giant pizza from Lore Pizza (17850 106A Ave.)

    • The new Lore Pizza on the west end is REALLY good. We tried their giant 24” New York Style pizza (built our own with pepperoni, sausage and prosciutto, yum!) and as with all giant novelty food things you think its not going to taste that great because it looks so cool but actually it takes amazing and drops jaws at the table. Right now it is walk-in only because the space is actually pretty small so be prepared to maybe wait. They also offer regular size pizzas and pizza styles of all types, plus beer (Trial & Ale Brewing Co).

  • Grab some Kind Ice Cream (various locations)

    • We treated our friends to some Kind Ice Cream over the holiday. Their special flavours for the month are Banana Cream Pie, Peanut Butter Oreo and Caramel Macchiatio (Vegan). You just missed their holiday Dunkaroos and Jegg Nog (that’s what we had lol).

  • Head to the Holly Dolly Christmas Pop-Up before it’s gone! (9902 109 St.)

    • I can’t rave enough about the pop-up holiday decor at Dolly’s Cocktails! As if this super cute place could get any cuter lol. The insane Christmas decor is only up until Jan. 7 so GO!! Amazing. I love their chicken lollipops, corn ribs, and assortment of drinks too (the holiday cocktail menu is also only on for a limited time). Ask for the one where the alcohol comes in an ornament! lol.

  • Try the tacos at Los Molcajetes Mexican (125 McLeod Ave., Spruce Grove)

    • A Spruce Grove (west of Edmonton) gem—we ordered some tacos from Los Molcajetes over the holiday for visiting friends and (to be expected) they loved it. This is a small Mexican restaurant + grocery store that makes killer tacos (really everything). Rave reviews for their tres leches cake too!

  • Order charcuterie from Meuwly’s Artisan Food Market (#101, 10706 124 St.)

    • I picked up a Charcuterie Board for 4 from Meuwly’s that made an excellent New Year’s Eve party starter and think you’d love it too. It’s super easy to order! Choose from small (feeds up to 4), medium (feeds up to 12), or large (feeds up to 20). The house-made and imported cured meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, fresh fruit and crackers come on a wooden board you can keep (or supply your own board!) It’s as beautiful as it is delicious.

    • I’m a Meuwly’s Ambassador (#Meuwlys_Partner) this year so stay tuned for more Meuwly’s content! Also: get $10 off each month of a three-month Meuwly’s Charcuterie Club Subscription Pack using my code LINDORK!! The subscription is different from the made-to-order charcuterie as the subscription gives you the items to cook/assemble whereas the charcuterie order alone is all set to eat.

  • Plus: if you’re headed to the Nordegg area this winter for mountain adventures, I can’t recommend Bang’s Bistro in Rocky Mountain House enough! This tiny Japanese restaurant is super good (the Triple Parade rolls are excellent).

Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

New on the Blog

Check out my NEW BLOG POST! It’s a pretty comprehensive list of suggestions for Things to do and Where to eat in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, plus where to stay and other travel recommendations. Phoenix s a quick, 3.5-hour direct flight from both Edmonton and Calgary, which means many Albertans are quite familiar with this desert sun. In fact, many Albertans also call Phoenix home! So it makes sense then that I wanted to put together this travel guide to Greater Phoenix—knowing just how many Albertans (and otherwise) will visit.
