Things to Do This Week

We’re still in a pandemic! In general, please stay home if sick, mask up, get boosted, etc.

  • Take in the work of women in arts at SkirtsAFire (various locations)

    • SkirtsAFire Festival returns this March 2-12 featuring variety shows, live music, theatre, comedy, dance and other arts performances elevating the artistic work of women. Check out the program and get tickets to shows!

  • Plan your Pride Week events (various locations)

    • NAIT, MacEwan, and Norquest Pride Weeks run March 6-10. Many events are open to the public (pre-registration may be required). The U of A’s Pride Week activities will run the week after (March 13-17).

  • Check out pre-JUNO Awards events (various locations)

    • The JUNO Awards takes place on March 13 at Rogers Place in Edmonton!

    • Leading up to it, there are lots of different events/activities happening! Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: Edify Best Restaurant suggestions, Mill Woods Dining Week and more!

Edify Edmonton’s Best Restaurants of 2023 list has just been released and I’m pleased that some of my top picks in the city made the final cut. This was my second year as part of the annual food list’s judging panel and I’m excited to see more delicious and diverse offerings included each year.

NAIT’s 2023 Chef in Residence has been announced—Calgary’s Connie DeSousa and John Jackson, co-chef and co-owners of CHARCUT Roast House (and a number of other eateries). The chefs mentor local culinary students but there are also public (ticketed) lunches and dinners you can attend too.

  • The public Chef in Residence events take place March 16 and 17 and will likely sell out so plan to get your tickets if you’re interested in trying culinary student-created cuisine led by the 2023 Chef in Residences Connie and John!

Plus:

  • Check out Nosh Food Festival (401 Festival Lane, Sherwood Park)

    • The popular Nosh Food Festival is back this weekend at the Strathcona County Community Centre March 4 and 5. This is free to attend and features 80+ Alberta food and drink producers.

  • The Greater Mill Woods Dining Week kicks off this week (various locations)

  • Try Detroit Style Pizza at Pizza Garage (31 Fairview Blvd. St. Albert)

    • Mike and I tried the Detroit-style Pizza from Pizza Garage in St. Albert last week and loved it! It even marked the return of Mike’s pizza vlogging lol. We got the Via 313 and Porky’s Revenge. They also do New York style and Bar Pie (thin crust, which generally I prefer lol. Mike’s just been craving Detroit style).

  • Try Arby’s features for the month! (various locations)

    • Arby’s is doing 2 for $10 Jalapeño Beef ‘N Cheddars plus Crispy Fish and Spicy Fish Sandwiches as their features for the month (on until April 9). I’ve been craving all foods these days and Arby’s of course is no exception lol. Check my Instagram this week to enter for some Arby’s gift cards too! #ArbysCanada_Partner

Eaten something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

Small Business Spotlight

Congrats to Sophie Gray and her team on the opening of DiveThru, a new Edmonton-based mental health space / community. Their 10151 81 Ave. Old Strathcona exterior says “You can cry here” lol. The studio has nine therapists with varying specialties and you can do a ‘Therapist Match’ to see who might be a good fit for you. My friend Dr. Lily Le, a registered psychologist, is also their Director of Clinical Innovation.
