Things to Do This Week

We’re still in a pandemic! In general, please stay home if sick, mask up, get boosted, etc.

Things to do this week: catch Anastasia the Musical, celebrate Chinatown’s Community Mural/Arts Party, experience Afro Latin Festival and more!
  • Check out the Chinatown Community Mural / Arts Party (9540 102 Ave.)

    • Hoping to see a lot more of these types of events in Chinatown in the coming year—thanks to Emily Chu and her crew for organizing a FREE Chinatown Community/Arts Mural Party taking place this Sunday, Feb 26 from 1-5 p.m. Family-friendly, musicians, artists, kids activities, live music, Chinatown tours, face painting, snacks and bevvies and more! See you there!!

  • “Journey to the Past” with Anastasia the Musical (Jubilee Auditorium)

    • Broadway Across Canada’s Anastasia the Musical is in Edmonton this week until Feb 26! I was invited to Opening Night and it was a wonderful show—I was a big fan of the 1997 animated movie (and the songs!) The set / screens they use in the show is really well done, and the leads have powerhouse voices!

  • Experience Edmonton’s Afro Latin Festival (various venues)

    • Get tickets to the Afro Latin Festival which runs this week until Feb 26 at various venues across the city, featuring celebrating and highlighting African, Black, Caribbean, and Latin cultures through music, food, dance, arts, and more! We went to their opening event for some Travel Alberta work and the energy was incredible.

  • Get tickets to WineFest (Edmonton Convention Centre)

    • WineFest returns this weekend Feb 25 & 26 at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Your ticket includes an all-inclusive sampling of hundreds of wines, hor’doeurves and a home-home wine glass.

  • Check out the Beverly Heights Community League Variety Show (4209 111 Ave.)

    • Get tickets to the Beverly Heights Variety Show, the longest-running community-based adult comedy variety show in Edmonton! Now in their 52 season, volunteers produce 12 weekend nights of adult comedy and entertainment from Feb 24-April 1.

  • Don’t miss these last few Black History Month events happening…

    • When African Women Talk: Black History Month Gala on Feb 25, celebrates the legacy of Canadian Women of African Descent and engaging in “meaningful dialogue about systemic racism with a focus on the critical issues and proposed solutions that can help to dismantle these systems.”

    • Taste of Africa Black History Month Celebration on Feb 25, is a “rich display of African Dance, Story Telling, Poetry, Arm chair travels, and more, with a tasting of a variety of African/Caribbean foods.

    • The Africa Caribbean Heritage Alliance Black History Celebration on Feb 26 includes a market with local vendors, a food tasting and Jerk Chicken. cook off, live music, fashion show, beer and snacks for purchase and more.

    • 5 Artists 1 Love Black History Month Art Show runs until April 4 at the Art Gallery of Alberta, and showcases the “dynamic beauty of the African diaspora through art, design, music, dance and poetry. The goal is to promote emerging and established artists, develop global African arts and cultures, and celebrate African-Canadian brilliance.”

  • It’s also your last chance to check out the giant Earth (Gaia) display at the Muttart Conservatory! It leaves Edmonton after Feb. 26.

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Eats this week: local pop tarts, massive sandwiches, all you can eat Japanese & more!
  • Say goodbye to Milk & Cookies Bakeshop’s storefront (5532 Calgary. Trail)

  • Try All You Can Eat Japanese/Vietnamese Fusion at Shogun (10125 121 St.)

    • I tried the All You Can Eat option at Japanese/Vietnamese Fusion restaurant Shogun in downtown Edmonton this week and loved it! The restaurant is super nice and spacious (I make a note of this because Sushi Toshi, which also does AYCE in north Edmonton is excellent but pretty cramped/tight space lol), and we found the quality of everything that came out really good. Sushi Toshi has a bit more variety but this is a nice central option! We didn’t try the Vietnamese portion of the menu but would be curious to try next visit. Speaking of All You Can Eat, Tanuki Kyoto downtown has also just announced they’ll be doing all you can eat (resos required).

  • Say hello to Alan of Yoshii Express (and try his food!!) (10443 82 Ave.)

  • Grab a sandwich with a pal at Pals Sandwiches (10335 83 Ave.)

    • I normally don’t choose sandwiches as my first food pick (well unless it’s a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich lol) but I do enjoy the ones from Pal Sandwiches in Old Strathcona! The Hoagie is nice + loaded, and their chip + pepperoncini and dill pickle soup is great too.

  • Try the steam buns from Yan’s Family Restaurant (4211 106 St.)

  • And maybe something special for your pooch…

  • Plus: Feed the Soul Dining Week has wrapped up but that doesn’t mean you can’t still eat your way through the Black-owned restaurant list! (like trying the Phat Tart pop tart from Phat Bar Bakery!)

Eaten something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
