  • Catch the final weekend of Silver Skate Festival (Hawrelak Park)

    • Silver Skate, Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival continues this week and weekend until Family Day Feb 20! I’m helping them with social media so I’m a bit partial to promoting their many FREE activities lol.

      • Check out the Snow Sculpture Garden + illuminated Folk Trail

      • See the Fire Sculpture Burns at 7:45 p.m. on Sat/Sun (it’s so cool!)

      • There’s a Battle of the Neighbourhoods food + brewery event tonight (Wed Feb 15 from 6-9 p.m.) $35 tix gets you food + drink from 4 breweries.

      • There’s a DJ dance party event on Thursday Feb 16 from 7-9 p.m. (in a heated tent!) Entry by donation to support Ukrainian newcomers. And in general, live free musical performances during the weekends.

        • … and more! It’s fun for all ages and it’s not just about skating (though skating at Hawrelak Park pond is awesome—it’s the biggest ‘rink’ in Edmonton). This is also the last major event at Hawrelak Park before it closes for a multi-year renovation so it’s a great time to visit!

  • Here’s some ideas for Family Day (Monday, Feb 20)

    • The Royal Alberta Museum is offering FREE Admission for Family Day! Timed resos are all full but they are accepting walk-ups if capacity allows.

    • There’s a FREE Family Day celebration at the Alberta Legislature from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. find indoor entertainment, education and activities for all ages inside the Legislature and Queen Elizabeth II Buildings.

    • There’s a lot of kids activities happening at West Edmonton Mall throughout the weekend for WEM Family Fun Days from Feb 18-20.

    • Every Thursday from 12-2 p.m. the Art Gallery of Alberta invites you to Art Hive, their community-based art making studio. No art training or experience is required to participate!!

    • “These safe(r) and inclusive spaces use art making as a tool for collaboration, dialogue, skill-sharing and community engagement for people across different cultural, socio-economic backgrounds, ages and abilities.”

Food to Try This Week

Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Please stay home if you’re sick.

Eats this week: Feed the Soul Dining Week eats, Vietnamese street food and more!

It’s Black History Month and the first Feed the Soul Dining Week showcasing Black-owned restaurants and Edmonton’s Black culinary scene. The Dining Week wraps up on Feb 17 so check out participating restaurants and plan a visit this week!

  • Try Ethiopian and Italian cuisine from Allegro on 95th (10805 95 St.)

    • Black-owned restaurant Allegro Italian Kitchen in Little Italy recently started offering an Ethiopian menu in addition to their delicious Italian one! So their Feed the Soul Dining Week deals include an Ethiopian option, Italian option, or a combo with both! Give it a try!

  • Check out Gebeta Ethiopian Cuisine (9349 118 Ave.)

    • Head to Alberta Avenue to try Gebeta Ethiopian Cuisine their Dining Week deals include a Vegan dip, vegetable platter or meaty meal for two, plus Ethiopian spiced tea! Their mango juice is also excellent.

  • And a few other Feed the Soul Dining Week spots to consider…

Plus a few more suggestions…

  • The newly renovated Confederation Lounge is now open at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald downtown. Check out their new lunch, dinner and cocktail menus!

  • Give Italia Mia in the west end (14981 Stony Plain Rd.). We popped in for a late dinner this week and were the only ones there! Maybe show them some love. They have a good selection of pastas, pizzas, appetizers and we loved the tiramisu.

  • Attend the Happy Beer Street Winter Fizzler on Feb 19! 7 breweries along 99 Street from 78 to 60 Ave. (south of Whyte Ave) will be offering cask beers, new releases and other festivities this Sunday, Feb. 19.

  • Ummm The Common has a brand new, super Instagrammable floral front entrance you should check out! Plus good food + drinks + DJs.

  • There’s a new Vietnamese restaurant in south Edmonton called Mai Mai Viet Street Kitchen (14221 23 Ave.) offering some fave items like Banh Khot (mini crepes with shrimp), Bo Tai Chanh (lime beef salad), various salad roll options, plus sandwiches, vermicelli and more. It’s on my list (of a few newly opened Vietnamese restaurants to try!)

  • There’s a new Italian restaurant Gnudi located inside JustCook Kitchens Food Hall (10344 105 St.) specializing in pasta made-from-scratch. The nice part about popping into the Food Hall is you also have the option to order from a few other restaurants inside.

  • And it’s the final week to take in the Old Strathcona Sweet Treats & Latte Festival where nearly 20 restaurants / cafes / bakeries are offering food + drink specials for the occasion.

Eaten something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
