Things to Do This Week
We’re still in a pandemic! Please mask up, stay home if sick, and get vaccinated/boosted.
Celebrate Winter in Little Italy (Giovanni Caboto Park)
This Sunday Dec. 11 and Dec. 18, visit Edmonton’s Little Italy neighbourhood for free winter fun for all ages. There will be free horse sleigh rides, chestnut roasting, hot chocolate, fire pits and marshmallow roasting, ice sculptures and more! Check out the Winter in Little Italy schedule.
Experience the Alberta Ballet in The Nutcracker (Northern Jubilee)
The Alberta Ballet presents The Nutcracker, this weekend only (Dec. 7-11), Get tickets to this beloved Alberta family tradition, a dazzling production showcasing 120 performers and a ive orchestra. Even if you’ve been to the show before, this year’s performances includes surprises and new elements for you to discover.
Get tickets to the Edmonton Opera’s Home for the Holidays (Northern Jubilee)
For the second year and one night only, the Edmonton Opera’s Home for the Holidays concert takes place at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium this Monday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. Experience classical and traditional holiday favourites. A great show for all ages!
Go tubing at the Edmonton Ski Club (9613 96 Ave.)
The Edmonton Ski Club is open for the season (when it’s not extreme weather conditions 🥶) and even if you don’t ski, it’s a great spot to try snow tubing! Racing down a snowy hill set to a backdrop of the Edmonton city skyline is fun for all ages. Tubing is daily, your ticket is good for an hour.
Visit Edmonton’s Candy Cane Lane (148 Street from 92 to 99 Avenue)
Edmonton’s Candy Cane Lane kicks off for the holiday season this weekend, with sleigh rides, fire pits and food trucks Dec. 9-11 (and subsequent weekends Dec. 16-18 and 21-23. Note they sold sleigh rides in advance this year and they are already sold out but it’s okay, still lots of fun to be had lol). This year there will also be three Open Street Nights (where streets are closed to vehicles) on Dec. 10, 17, and 23. This 50-year+ Edmonton holiday tradition is free to attend but donations are encouraged for the Food Bank.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Order a Silver Skate Festival “Celebrate Edmonton Support Local Gift Bag”
Silver Skate Festival’s “Celebrate Edmonton Support Local Gift Bags” are back this year with proceeds not only supporting the fest—which is Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival—but also the local businesses featured! The deadline to order a bag is Dec. 10. It’s the perfect surprise gift for the holiday season. There are different sizes of bags available, with different products from vendors including A Bite of Brazil, Acquired Taste Tea Co., Caramunchies, Fifendekel, Indigenous Spirits, Campio Brewing, Token Bitters, Raefen Coffee Roasters, and MORE!
Place an order for a Sugared & Spiced Holiday Platter or Cookie Box
Jeff of Sugared & Spiced shared these stark realities of owning a small food business right now and long story short, if one of your favourite local businesses “made it through” the pandemic, it probably didn’t come easy and they’re still trying hard to keep things afloat. So, if you can, place a Holiday Platter or Cookie Box order at Sugared & Spiced (and consider what other local spots you can support this season!)
Check out the new Slow Pour Beer Bar (10416 122 St.)
There’s a new beer bar in Edmonton—Slow Pour—which opens TODAY! In addition to unique beers from around the world, Slow Pour carries natural wines, small plates and fine beverages for the sober-curious. “Whether you’re a cicerone* (like a sommelier, but for beer instead of wine), a recent craft beer convert, or still undecided, we’ll meet you where you are. We’re just as happy pushing people’s palates as we are serving up frothy pilsner softballs.”
Hit up Edmonton’s winter patios—like Cafe Bicyclette & Fu’s Repair Shop
Edmonton Winter Patio season is upon us, and some of the city’s best winter patios (like Cafe Bicyclette at 8627 91 St.) are now open! Check out the Guide to Winter Patios blog I did last year for more patio ideas. I know I need to update it too—my friends at Fu’s Repair Shop (9902 109 St.) have also winterized their great patio!
Visit the new Luna Mexican Restaurant (9880 63 Ave.)
From some of the owners who brought us HUMA, check out the newly rebranded Luna Mexican Restaurant. They are “cheering and sharing again through authentic Mexican food. Salud! to new beginnings.” (They’re still selling the delicious giant cheese horn! lol)
Shop the Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market (10305 97 St.)
This weekend stop by to browse and support vendors at the Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market and partake in FREE sleigh rides around the block to celebrate the season. Sleigh rides run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There’s Christmas Carolers from 11:30-1:30 roaming the main floor, and a Christmas Market happening on the second floor as well.
Eaten something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
