Hallo from Switzerland! 🇨🇭 This week I’m sending out the newsletter all the way to you from Basel, Switzerland, where I’m working with WorldSkills—the world’s biggest skills competition and skills education movement (that I love!) It’s not a tourism-focused trip but I am hoping to squeeze in enough Swiss eats to blog / video blog about in case you ever visit! In the meantime, here are Edmonton suggestions..
Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Go on an Edmonton Ghost Tour (various locations)
For this week’s Spooky Season suggestions, why not book an Edmonton Ghost Tour? There’s lots of options, like walking tours at the U of A, a haunted pub tour through Old Strathcona, even a haunted trolly ride on the High Level Street Car.
Get tickets to DARK at Fort Edmonton Park (7000 143 St.)
The popular DARK Halloween experience is back at Fort Edmonton Park featuring three haunted ‘house’ experiences Under the Big Top, Blood Harvest, and 3 a.m. Dead of Night, along with a Dead Centre of Town show at the Capitol Theatre, spooky cocktails, spooky beats, and this year you can also book a stay at their Hotel Selkirk as part of your spooky festivities.
Check out Manchester Square’s Oktoberfest (10704 120 St.)
Manchester Square is hosting is first Fall Festival—Oktoberfest themed—this Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. that’s free to attend, with live music, a food truck line-up, plus access to the shops at the Square.
Get lit at LitFest (various locations)
Get your literature on (lol) at LitFest, Canada’s original non-fiction festival, with events and workshops running through to October 23. There’s workshops, panels, film screenings, lots of talented featured writers, a Lost Buildings of Edmonton waling tour, and a food-focused event (including food + drink!) too. Some free, some ticketed events.
Watch short films as part of the Edmonton Short Film Festival (Metro Cinema)
It’s the 10th anniversary of the Edmonton Short Film Festival with a red carpet gala, short screenings as long as long short screenings (films up to 60 mins). There’s also a Comedy Night on Oct. 14!
Head to the Edmonton Fall Home Show Oct 14-16, 2022!
The Edmonton Fall Home Show returns this weekend Oct 14-16, 2022 at the Edmonton Expo Centre! Whether you’re browsing for a specific project or just looking for some general home inspiration, local and international home professionals at the show have you covered! Find more than 150+ booths and visit several unique feature displays when you check out @YEGHomeShows this weekend!

Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Grab a Japanese lunch at Shojo Izakaya (10425 121 St. – Brewery District)
One of my favourite Japanese restaurants and patios in Edmonton Shojo Izakaya, is now open for lunch! Lunch service runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or grab dinner from 5 to 10:30 p.m.).
Get fried chicken at Ralph’s before its gone (9508 87 St.)
The strip mall that houses a Strathearn neighbourhood icon Ralph’s Handi Mart is being torn down soon so this is the last week you can grab famous fried chicken and wedges there (their last day is Oct. 15). I did a video about Ralph’s for Travel Alberta last year you can watch here!
Try the ahi tuna twists from XIX Nineteen (Terwillegar or St. Albert)
Mike and I celebrated our anniversary recently with date night at one of our favourite fancier dining spots XIX Nineteen. We love the ahi tuna twists (of course), and pretty much everything else. Ask for a seat by the kitchen window so you can watch the action happening!
Grab Fuge Sausage at LOVEPIZZA (various locations)
LOVEPIZZA has been using Fuge sausage in on pizzas for awhile, but after learning Fuge Fine Meat was preparing to shut down, LOVEPIZZA owners made an offer to Fuge Fine Meat so Fuge Sausage is now part of the LOVEPIZZA family. Find sausage on their pizzas, and at local eateries like Otto, and soon you can expect to see Fuge at grocery retailers and events.
Try Mexican + Colombian food at Smokin’ Barrels Cocina Latina (13119 156 St.)
I spotted this recommendation for Smokin’ Barrels Cocina Latina fish tacos from Anna-Marie on Twitter and hadn’t actually heard of this restaurant before! It opened in March in west Edmonton and specializes in “Mexican and Colombian-inspired Cuisine & Traditional Smoked BBQ.” Give it a try!
Eaten something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
