Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Experience Kaleido Arts Festival on Alberta Avenue (118 Ave from 90-95 St.)
Arts on the Ave.’s FREE Kaleido Festival returns to 118th Ave this Sept 16-18, with an Aurora Lantern Parade (Friday), The Giants (Saturday and Sunday), UNITY Indigenous art project, Chalk it Up! Murals, a Family Fun Zone, live musical performances, and more!

Check out the final weekend of Fort Edmonton Park (and their Garage Sale)
This weekend marks the last of Fort Edmonton Park‘s summer season! Ride the Steam Train, hop on a vintage Streetcar, watch a short film at Capitol Theatre, hitch a ride on the Horse-Drawn Wagon, chat with a historic interpreter, play games on the Midway, and also check out the Fort Edmonton Park Garage Sale inside the Train Station for deals on historic Fort Edmonton Park swag! (no admission required for the Garage Sale).
Geek out at the Edmonton Expo! (Edmonton EXPO Centre)
The Edmonton Expo returns this weekend Sept 16-18 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre—bringing you 3 days of fun for all things Comics, Sci-Fi, Horror, Anime, Gaming and more! It’s fun for fans of all ages—with celebrity guest panels, photo ops, cosplayers, artists alley, and more! The Saturday of the show is also themed Star Wars Saturday!! There will be Padawan Training, a Druid Hunt, Order 66 game, Star Wars Trivia and more galactic fun for all Jedis (and even Siths lol). I partnered with the Edmonton Expo to promote the show (and have had so much fun being a fan at past Expos—and moderating panels too!) Learn more and get your tickets.
Participate in the Edmonton Fancy Women Bike Ride (downtown area)
Edmonton women, trans, non-binary, queer folks and youths—especially those who don’t normally ride bikes in the city—are invited to join the FREE Edmonton Fancy Women Bike Ride this Sunday, Sept. 18. It’s meant to be an easy, fun, and fancied-up cruise, a slow roll on bikes of any kind. This type of ride began in Turkey and now occurs in 151 cities around the world. This is Edmonton’s second year.
My friends at Pedego Edmonton are also offering some discounted e-bike rental rates if you’d like to participate on their awesome bikes!
Catch an event for Community League Day (various locations)
Saturday, Sept. 17 is Edmonton Community League Day! There are 162 community leagues in the city and you’re encouraged to check out your (or another’s!) league on Saturday—learn more about how you can support your community, and just experience some fun, free events.
Experience Kultura Filipino Festival (Heritage Amphitheatre, Hawrelak)
Celebrate Filipino culture, hospitality, food and entertainment at the annual Kultura Filipino Festival which returns this Sept. 17 & 18. Did you know there are more than 160,000+ Filipino Albertans and more than 64,000 Filipino Edmontonians? The event at Hawrelak Park runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days and features lots of performances, vendors and exhibitors. (Free to attend).
Plus: if you’re at Terwillegar Park on Sunday, Sept. 18 you can catch the Toonie breakfast and kick-off of the Sourdough Raft Race!
The Sourdough Raft Race is an annual river raft race featuring some pretty unique rafts! You can catch the rafts all along the North Saskatchewan River Bank on Sunday, Sept. 18, or spectators are invited to a Toonie Breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. down at Terwillegar Park.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Try the Beef Birria Pizza from Panini’s (8544 Jasper Ave.)
Saba shared a pretty unbeatable recommendation of the feature Beef Birria (taco-esque) Pizza from Panini’s Italian Cucina: “oohwee the beef birria monthly special pizza from panini’s has made me feel feelings that i haven’t felt since the awazé beef tibs monthly special pizza from Panini’s. This month (and every month), if you got the dough, get pizza from Panini’s!!! And tip very well!!!”
Check out the new Vietnamese sandwich spot Banh Mi Day (11765 Jasper Ave.)
Chris shared that the former Fantasia Noodle House owners have retired and the new spot Banh Mi Day Vietnamese restaurant is now open. They have a small menu of pho (Vietnamese soup), banh mi, and appetizers. Looks like this restaurant is also from the owners of the former Pho & Bun restaurant.
Try Thai & Laos cuisine at Syphay (Chinatown or South Edmonton locations)
I had lunch with a friend this week at Syphay Thai & Laos Restaurant this week. I didn’t actually realize they had opened a south Edmonton location (4428 Calgary Trail) in addition to their near-Chinatown spot. The south side location is really nice! We shared a tom yum soup, phanang curry, and pad kee maow. I also had a lychee juice!
Do a date night at Barbacoa Steakhouse (470 South Ave Unit C., Spruce Grove)
We are such fans of Barbacoa Steakhouse in Spruce Grove! If you’re looking for a date night, make a reservation (highly recommended) and share the 40oz Tomahawk for two, which comes perfectly cooked (we get medium rare 💖) with herb roasted fingerling potatoes and seasonal veg (asparagus). We also share an appetizer (your pick! Dry ribs and Caesar are delicious. People also love their devilled eggs). Barbacoa sources nearly all their ingredients from local farms and producers, and they make awesome drinks (non-alcoholic too)! I also love their pappardelle!
Celebrate Izakaya Tomo’s 10th anniversary! (3739 99 St.)
The amazing Japanese eatery Izakaya Tomo is celebrating their 10th anniversary with some pre-orders of anniversary T-shirts but even if you’re not in the market for a new shirt—it is a good time to revisit or try for Izakaya Tomo for the first time! Reservations are recommended.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
