Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Check out Beer Street festivities (99 St. from 78 Ave. to 60th Ave.)
Beer Street, the unofficial Brewery District south of Whyte Ave along 99 St. from 78 Ave. and 60th Ave., is hosting a Still Sizzlin’ summer event this Sunday Sept. 4. It will include special brews, food trucks, and more (details are still sparse lol) Check their Instagram for updates!
Hit the spray parks and outdoor pools around Edmonton (various locations)
It’s going to be another hot one this week—and with summer winding down, it could be a great time to hit up Edmonton spray parks and outdoor pools. A couple of pools have extended their hours!
You could always hit the river or nearby lakes (safely) with paddle boat or kayak rentals. Don’t forget to use my codes – 10% off kayak rentals from Fusion World Rentals with code Kayakers10 or 15% off a raft rental from The Paddle Station with code LINDORK15 by Sept. 30, 2022.
Get tickets to Broadway Across Canada’s Come From Away (Jubilee)
The broadway show Come From Away runs in Edmonton this week only from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4. This is based on a true story of the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers following 9/11.
Check out the Mural Massive at Grindstone Theatre (10019 81 Ave.)
The third annual Mural Massive in Old Strathcona kicks off Sept 3 and runs until Sept. 10. You can watch live mural painting throughout the 10 days of the festival, do mural tours, attend late night art parties, and more.
Celebrate Caribbean street food and drink at Cocktail & Jerk Festival
The Cocktail & Jerk Festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday Sept 3 & 4 at Dr. Wilbert McIntyre Park in Old Strathcona. Attending is free with live music and dance performances. You can buy Caribbean street food and alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic cocktails, and they are also selling tickets to an after party.
Take in free “Alberta Day” activities at the Legislature
First I will go on record as saying I think Jason Kenney is a terrible premier and many of his choices have made the lives of Albertans considerably worse and he has also emboldened the growing extremist, violent, hateful and racist people in this province. And that this “Alberta Day” makes no sense because we already have Heritage Day and Labour Day and people don’t get the day off, HOWEVER since the activities are free I thought it worth mentioning. You can see the schedule here!
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Try the new Hu’s Noodle Nook (11238 104 Ave.)
Thanks to @krispybites for the heads up about a new ramen and Japanese noodle shop downtown near MacEwan called Hu’s Noodle Nook. It took over the Nomiya location in Unity Square. Looks like a delicious menu! I can’t wait to try.
Check out The Little Spot (11907 Jasper Ave.)
Thanks to @britl for the heads up about a new little deli spot aptly named The Little Spot in downtown Edmonton specializing in coffee, paninis, dolci and gelato. A cute new “little spot” to try!
Celebrate Jung Kook’s Birthday at Calabash Cafe (228 91 St.)
For my BTS fans, there is a Jung Kook birthday event happening at Calabash Cafe this week. Try their orange mango-ade, hotteok Korean pancake, and other great treats (even if you aren’t a BTS fan it’s a great south Edmonton cafe to visit lol).
Head out to Devon for Dim Sum (45B Superior St., Devon, AB.)
I found myself in Devon, located just 40 minutes south west of Edmonton, and had fantastic dim sum at their new-ish 888 Dim Sum & Noodle restaurant. Highly recommend and if you’re there, you can visit Voyageur Park, which is a really beautiful park with access to the North Saskatchewan River, surrounded by tons of trees (that get even prettier with fall colours).
Try some burgers for Le Burger Week (various locations)
From Sept 1-14, different restaurants across the country including Edmonton are participating in Le Burger Week, offering burger specials. Some of my favourite burger spots are not on the Edmonton list but you could still have burgers anywhere you like to mark the occasion.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
