Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Catch a Movie on the Square (Churchill Square)
FREE Movies on the Square returns to Churchill Square this week! This free outdoor movie series takes place Aug 17, 24, 30, and Sept 9 and features family-friendly films. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy pre-movie entertainment before taking in the blockbuster hit that will be playing on a 3-storey high inflatable screen. The city is encouraging participants to dress up in the theme of the film for a chance to win prizes too.
Shop the Black Owned Market Night Market at Glass Bookshop / Latitude 53
This Thursday, Aug 18 from 7 – 9 p.m., you can catch the Black Owned Market Night Market at Latitude 53 / Glass Bookshop (10242 106 St.) featuring art, books, artisan goods and drinks—all from Black authors, artists, and vendors. Glass Bookshop will also offer 10% off select BOM YEG titles highlighting writing by Black authors.
Check out Edmonton Wildlife Festival (Queen Mary Park 10844 117 St.)
WILDNorth, which rescues, treats, and releases injured and orphaned wildlife, is hosting the Edmonton Wildlife Festival this Sunday, Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Queen Mary Park. It’s FREE to attend (though donations are encouraged to participate in some activities), and includes live wildlife / education ambassadors, games and crafts, vendors, speakers, live music, food for purchase and more.
Experience the Edmonton Corn Maze Sunflowers (26171 Secondary Hwy 627)
The sunflowers have bloomed at the Edmonton Corn Maze! And you’re encourage to stop by for a #SunflowerSelfie. The field is included with your corn maze admission. Check the website for bloom status depending on when you plan to go. The blooms should be beautiful for the next two weeks. There is also a U-pick sunflowers section so you can take sunflowers home with you as well!
Don’t miss the final weekend of the Edmonton Fringe Festival
The Edmonton Fringe Festival runs until Sunday, Aug 21. With 27 venues and more than 160 shows—plus street performers and food! Even if you don’t catch a show, it’s fun to stroll through Old Strathcona for the fun, summer festival vibes!
Sign up for Adult Astronaut Bootcamp (TELUS World of Science)
Giving you a bit of notice to sign up for the TELUS World of Science’s Adult Astronaut Bootcamp taking place next Thursday Aug 25 from 7 – 10 p.m. This is a 3-hour camp featuring a series of training assignments over the course of the evening including getting your PILOT LICENSE to launch a model rocket, completing ASTRONOMY 101 to learn how to navigate the night sky, getting an introduction to EXOPLANET RESEARCH and undergoing a MEDICAL CHECK where your coordination will be tested under intense conditions (plus more!)
Don’t forget to check out Summer in Secord!
The summer fun continues at West Secord and Secord Heights this month. I’ve partnered with Secord to tell you about this family-friendly neighbourhood, located just minutes away from lots of amenities (for instance, it’s only an 8 minute drive from West Edmonton Mall!) It’s also close to Callingwood Farmer’s Market, home to 125+ vendors, and when you drop by the show homes at West Secord and Secord Heights this Aug, you can take home an awesome goodie bag featuring items from the market picked out by my friend Justine Ma.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Get tickets to MilkCrate and Taste Alberta’s Feast in the Field!
I’ve been invited to Feast in the Field this Saturday Aug. 20 and I hope to see you there too! This is a special, outdoors dinner at 4 Fox Akers Farm near Fort Saskatchewan. The long table meal showcases Alberta grown and raised food products: Pork, Dairy, Pulses, and Canola. I also had the pleasure of attending last year’s Feast in the Field (pictured above!) and it was such an amazing night. Tickets are $95/person. Sales end on Friday.
Visit Edmonton institution Bistro Praha (10117 101 St.)
Longstanding European restaurant Bistro Praha received international attention this week, featured in this New York Times column. This restaurant has been serving authentic goulash, cabbage soup, wiener schnitzel and a range of European style dishes for more than 40 years. Have you been? Have you been in awhile? Time for a visit!
Check out Canada’s Best Restaurants Long List Finalists (various locations)
Congratulations and shout out to Edmonton eateries that made enRoute / Air Canada’s Best Restaurants Long List—including hip new fav Fu’s Repair Shop, Indigenous restaurant/caterer Pei Pei Chei Ow, and Chef Paul Shufelt’s newest spot Hayloft Steak+Fish. Show them some love to celebrate this national recognition.
Slurp up one last ramen from Nudoru on Whyte Ave. (10532 82 Ave.)
Nudoru Ramen Bar on Whyte Ave. is closing (😔) and Sunday Aug. 21 is the final day you can slurp up ramen there—so send them off on a high note! On the bright side, their sister ramen restaurant Menjiro will still be operating after Aug. 21.
Grab burgers and fries from GRAVY – burgers and fries (10933 120 St.)
I hadn’t been to GRAVY – burger and fries since their rebrand earlier this year (they were formerly The Local Omnivore, still same ownership!) but Mike and I stopped by over the weekend and really enjoyed our burgers and fries (poutine), plus slush (they have a few different flavour pumps—I always get blue lol). Check them out if you haven’t yet (or haven’t been in awhile!)
Participate in the final weekend of Alberta Dine Around Festival
Alberta on the Plate’s Dine Around Festival—celebrating and sharing Alberta food and drink—runs until Aug 21 at various restaurants in Edmonton (and across the province). There are nine Edmonton and area restaurants offering special menus as part of this year’s event.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
