Things to Do This Week

If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!

Things to do this week: The Fringe, Open Farm Days, Edmonton Pride Float, and much more!
  • Check out Alberta Open Farm Days (various locations)

    • This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of Alberta Open Farm Days—a province-wide open house for farms and producers. Learn how your food is produced, find local products, meet local farmers and producers. This is the weekend many offer tours, farm to table dinners, and more!

    • I am hoping to make it to Chatsworth Farm just east of Edmonton who are offering livestock tours, machinery demos, hands-on farm activities, ice cream, a BBQ lunch and more!

  • Grab tickets to the Edmonton Fringe Festival (Old Strathcona)

    • The Edmonton Fringe Festival kicks off this weekend (with a FREE street party tonight Aug 10). This is the 41st event running Aug 11-21 with more than 160 shows across 27 venues—did you know the Edmonton is home to North America’s largest, longest-running fringe theatre festival?! If you’re not taking in a show or two, visiting the rounds for free street performances and visiting food / market vendors and the fun Fringe atmosphere is still fun too!

  • Get A Taste of Open Streets (104 St. North of Jasper, South of 102 Ave.)

    • Paths or People is back with A Taste of Open Streets this Sat, August 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.! FREE to attend, with live music, outdoor market, bike decorating and parade, family and dog-friendly activities, a Beer Garden and more!

  • Participate in the Edmonton Pride Float (Terwillegar to Laurier Park)

    • The first-ever rainbow float down the North Saskatchewan River takes place this Sat, August 13 presented by Edmonton Pride Float with partners River Watch Alberta. Bring your own float(s), rent a tube or book spots on guided rafts! Float from Terwillegar to Sir Wilfred Laurier Park. There will be a FREE after-float party at Laurier that includes music, performances and glorious Edmonton tap water via EPCOR’s #GlassOfTheSask community water tank! 💧💦 (but seriously, glorious!)

    • I also blogged a few more August events featuring this water tank in partnership with EPCOR (link below!)

  • Laugh the weekend away at The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival

    • There’s a bunch of comedy acts taking place at the Edmonton Exhibition Lands Racetrack for the annual Great Outdoors Comedy Festival running this weekend Aug. 12-14 including Amy Schumer’s show on Sat.

  • Celebrate Londonderry Mall’s 50th Anniversary at Londapalooza

  • Check out the Pride of the Northside (7104 144 Ave.)

    • Speaking of north Edmonton—the Pride of the Northside basketball tournament is happening this weekend (Aug 13 & 14) and includes a Community Market, BBQ, live performances, and more! Free to attend!

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

Food to Try This Week

Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.

Eats this week: Korean bingsu, Brazilian cheese buns, and Filipino fusion ice cream!
  • Load up on Brazilian cheese buns at A Bite of Brazil (10114 104 St.)

    • Plan your visit to A Bite of Brazil on Mondays to take advantage of their new 15 Pão de queijo cheese buns deal with $6. FIFTEEN FOR $6!! While we were there we also got their rumpsteak and brisket cheesebun sandwiches, and shared chicken fritters. Also get their mango juice!!!

  • Beat the heat with bingsu from HanJan (3735 99 St.)

    • I had the absolute pleasure of digging into a strawberry bingsu dessert from Korean restaurant HanJan this week and encourage you to do the same! Bingsu is a Korean shaved ice dessert with condensed milk, and typically topped with chopped fruit and syrup.

  • Try a new Yelo’d twist ice cream flavour (10150A 82 Ave.)

    • I tried Yelo’d‘s matcha and guava soft serve twist this week and loved it! They also now have ube x strawberry keso (cheesecake) twist or pakwan (watermelon) x bubblegum twists. Flavours are always changing so keep up on their Instagram!

  • Try some Campio drinks for good causes (10257 105 St.)

  • Try a Thali combo from Little India (9250 34 Ave.)

    • Thanks to Aranya for this recommendation for Little India!

    • “My boyfriend and I have been obsessed with ordering the Thali combos from Little India. The portions are big, (I usually have mine for dinner, then lunch the next day) and it’s consistently hot (temperature) and absolutely delicious (the lentil dish is mind blowing)! I’ve had the lamb and the butter chicken and they’re both really good! Their Pani Puri and Fish Pakoras are great as appetizers too! Anyways, lots of exclamation points later, highly recommend Little India for takeout!”

Plus: don’t forget the deadline to subscribe to Steve and Dan’s Fresh B.C. Fruit Half Season Late CSA Boxes is August 17, for fruit box pick-ups beginning August 19 and running weekly until October 7! Code FRUITLINDA gets you 10% off.

This Sunday: Q&A with Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu

Every other Sunday, I profile a new “interesting person” in a Q&A series just for paid newsletter subscribers. The next person I’ll be profiling this Sunday, August 14, 2022 is Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu, Professor, Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta.

My Q&A with Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu goes out to paid newsletter subscribers first on August 14, 2022.

Here’s an except from the Q&A:

I try to be honest and candid (on Twitter). Of course, as an academic, it’s part of my job to speak clearly and bravely about societal issues. My job comes with special protections for that privilege in the form of tenure and the principle of academic freedom. Both allow me to share my professional work and opinion without fear of repercussions. It is not an absolute privilege—I do have to keep my opinions respectful and free of hate speech and misinformation. To be honest, I don’t know how much I’d stick my neck out without these protections. I do have a rebellious side, but I also try not to be reckless in communicating my feelings or navigating life generally. I think there is a fine balance one can strike between bravery and reckless disregard for your job, safety, life, etc., and my advice is to do that using tools like humour, satire and facts. For me, this balance shifts towards bravery where the issue is one I simply cannot ignore, such as anti-Black racism, transphobia, homophobia, or corruption. If I cannot live with myself to remain silent, then I will speak, consequences be damned. – Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu
