Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Check out all the pop-up art at The Works Festival (Churchill Square)
The Works Festival is on at Churchill Square until July 17 featuring performers, visual artists, workshops, live music, food, and pop-up art installations (like this cool ocean wave!) This is North America’s largest, FREE, outdoor festival dedicated to visual arts.
The Edmonton Street Performers Festival also runs at Churchill Square until July 17!
Laugh it up at Rapid Fire Theatre’s Improvaganza (8529 Gateway Blvd.)
The annual Improvaganza improv and sketch comedy festival presented by Rapid Fire Theatre is on until July 23! Check out the show schedule and get tickets.
Celebrate African Culture at Africanival (Louise McKinney Waterfront Park)
Africanival celebrates African Culture in Edmonton July 16 & 17. There’s a flag parade, live performances, a fashion show, cultural presentations, and of course—food! Check it out!!
Head to the Summer Loving Festival at Manchester Square (12016 107 Ave.)
Manchester Square is hosting a Summer Festival on July 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring food trucks, vintage cars, an extended Arcadia patio, crafts, an indoor market, face painting, a DJ, and more! FREE to attend.
Get tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s OVO—only in town for 4 days (Rogers Place)
Cirque du Soleil is back with its presentation of OVO, running at Rogers Place for only four days from July 13-17. This show takes audiences into a “hidden universe alive at our feet; an ecosystem teeming with life and unseen beings – insects that work, eat, crawl, flutter, feast, fight and court among each other in an ongoing explosion of energy and movement.” I was invited to OVO’s media opening event (tonight!) and am so excited.
And don’t forget to get pre-sale tickets to BaconFest YEG at K-Days!
My friends Graham and Donovan are putting on BaconFest YEG at K-Days this year on July 28! Tickets include gate admission plus 1 bacon food sample at each of the participating restaurants (it’s a great deal!) You can get pre-sale tickets using code ‘bacon’ on the K-Days website.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Try the Vegetarian / Vegan Asian cuisine at Padmanadi (two locations)
Padmanadi is an awesome, family-owned restaurant has been serving up pretty much unmatched Indonesian, Chinese, Thai and Indian plant-based dishes in Edmonton for over 16 years, and now has two locations (Chinatown and South). Like many small, family-owned eateries in town, Padmanadi hasn’t seen as much dine-in customers as they once did. They asked if I could help remind people they’re still around (and that they have a south Edmonton location!) and perhaps let a different audience know they should consider trying them—so that’s this!
As a bonus, they’re giving DINE-IN customers 10% off at either location if you mention LINDORK to your server before July 31.
Recent dishes that were a hit with my family include the Tom Yum soup, Curry “Chicken,” and Spicy Green Beans! Bring a group and dine family style. They also have gluten free options. #Padmanadi_Partner
In next week (July 20)’s email newsletter, I’m giving away a $50 gift card to Padmanadi for a newsletter subscriber! Stay tuned.
Get take-home soup from Continental Treat Fine Bistro (various locations)
I had the pleasure of picking up a dill pickle soup container to go from Continental Treat Fine Bistro this week while I was exploring the hamlet of Wabamun less than hour west of Edmonton. Continental Treat is now selling at a few different Farmers Markets in and around town! You can get their dill pickle, borscht, or sauerkraut soups (among many other items to go). (Stay tuned for my Wabamun Day Trip Blog Guide!)
Go for brunch at Urban Diner (12427 102 Ave.)
Edmonton brunch institution Urban Diner is one of the restaurants participating in EPCOR’s “Glass of the Sask” campaign highlighting how tasty our local tap water is. Seriously, I rave about our water regularly—and now I’ve partnered with EPCOR to do it more officially, ha! Check out the fun water carafe at Urban Diner and participating restaurants (check the list here), and enter my give away of a $300 gift card (Brunch for 6!) to Urban Diner on my Instagram or Facebook. #EPCOR_Partner
Check out the Medium Rare Carnivore Club (6492 Cartmell Place Chappelle)
Deb R. wanted to recommend the Medium Rare Carnivore Club steakhouse in this week’s newsletter! From Deb:
“I think their smashed burger with grilled onions, smoked bacon, M&R sauce, and double cheese is fantastic. Their Korean Fried Chicken Burger with Asian slaw and maple syrup has a nice crunch and kick to it as well. The truffle fries!! So delicious. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Guess I will have to go again soon. It’s a small establishment with great service and nice atmosphere.”
Celebrate the grand opening of Tee Pee Treats (CO*LAB 9641 102A Ave.)
Edmonton Indigenous restaurant Tee Pee Treats has relocated to CO*LAB near downtown Edmonton. Tee Pee Treats specializes in contemporary Bannock-infused Indigenous food. They are delightful! I actually did a feature on Owner/Chef Curtis Cardinal for Travel Alberta last summer that you can check out here.
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
You missed a Newsletter-Only Giveaway!
In this week’s newsletter, my email subscribers got a chance to enter to win one of two $25 gift cards to Arby’s Canada! In next week (July 20)’s newsletter I’m giving away a $50 gift card to Edmonton Vegetarian / Vegan restaurant Padmanadi!

This Sunday: Q&A with Hunter Cardinal
Every other Sunday, I profile a new “interesting person” in a Q&A series just for paid newsletter subscribers. The next person I’ll be profiling this Sunday, July 17, 2022 is Hunter Cardinal, Actor and Director of Story at Naheyawin.
Here’s an excerpt from our Q&A:
A major misconception that took a while for me to unlearn is the idea that you need to “leave yourself at the door” when acting. We all have such unique life experiences and perspectives, that to leave those gifts at the door is such a loss for some really meaningful and healing storytelling. This was a lesson taught to me by the late Brent Carver and it’s something I’ve held close to my heart in all my projects. – Hunter Cardinal
