Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up—especially indoors. We’re still in a pandemic. Please get vaccinated/boosted!
Celebrate the official start to Summer on Happy Beer Street (99 St. / 60-78 Ave)
June 30 is the official start to Summer on Happy Beer Street! This is Edmonton’s emerging Brewery District with 7 breweries just south of Whyte Ave. It’s a street party with food, drinks, live music and more.
Visit Vignette’s Brick & Mortar storefront + shops (10043 108 St.)
Vignettes Design Series has finally launched their Brick & Mortar storefront, shops, and festival. Check out spaces that have been transformed by local architects, designers, artists, makers and builders. Browse 7 pop-up businesses and check out the gallery featuring works from over 75 artists.
Take in some live music at the Edmonton Jazz Festival (various locations)
Celebrate all things jazz at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival which features shows from various local, national and international jazz musicians at various indoor and outdoor venues across the city.
Check out Broadway Across Canada’s Hamilton musical (Jubilee Auditorium)
I was invited to media night for Broadway Across Canada’s Hamilton musical last week and an amazing experience! I had no idea what Hamilton was going to be about—or its style—and I absolutely loved it. It’s very different from other musicals—for many reasons. You’ve got to see it! Be sure to sign up for the Ham4Ham $10 ticket lottery they’re running—where some winners for each show get to purchase tickets for just $10! The show is in Edmonton until July 10.
Watch ELOPE Musical Theatre’s Brigadoon (Westbury Theatre, 10330 84 Ave.)
From July 1-9, you can catch local ELOPE Musical Theatre’s presentation of the popular Brigadoon, the timeless, romantic classic that brings the mystery and magic of the Scottish highlands to life.
Take part in the July 1 Run and Walk for Reconciliation (St. Albert)
A reminder that Every Child Matters—and locally the second annual Run and Walk for Reconciliation takes place this Friday July 1 at Rotary Park in St. Albert. You can also contribute to their GoFundMe, which supports the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. I took part in this walk last year (though am unfortunately out of town this year!)
Experience the Summer at Secord Heights + West Secord!
I’ve partnered with Secord to promote their summer show homes! Plan a show home crawl :)
Join Secord all summer long in West Secord and Secord Heights! Secord has teamed up with Justine Ma to highlight incredible amenities around the west Edmonton community, and she’s curated some amazing gifts that you can get when you visit!

Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Hit the Creekside Eats patio at Snow Valley (13204 Rainbow Valley Rd.)
Snow Valley’s river valley patio Creekside Eats is now open for the summer (no snow! lol) This is a dog-friendly outdoor patio where you can order ice cream, thin-crust pizzas, hot dogs/smokies, mini donuts, and a wide range of bevvies (beer, wine, seltzers, coolers, and locally handcrafted cocktails from The Fort Distillery!
Celebrate the grand opening of El Mero Mero (12223 156 St.)
Congratulations to popular taco truck El Mero Mero who open their first restaurant location this week in west Edmonton! They’re open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for Grand Opening Day June 30, serving tacos, cervezas, tortillas, pasteles and much more, plus sweet treats from local baker MIEL by Mel. My friend Sharon wrote about their expansion in Taproot.
Show some love to Anvil Coffee House (6148 90 Ave.)
Anvil Coffee House’s Instagram account was recently hacked (please turn on two-factor authentication to connect your account to your phone number which significantly reduces chance of hacking!) so I thought it might be nice to show them some love. Stop by for coffees, breakfast and lunch and follow the new Instagram account.
Taste ribs at the Beaumont Rib Fest (5001 Rue Eaglemont, Beaumont)
Western Canada Rib Fest Tour stops in Beaumont this weekend (July 1-4) for Beaumont Rib Fest at the Beaumont Sport and Recreation Centre. Free entry, walk-up and order from various BBQ vendors and choose from pork or beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork, chicken, sausage and more! This is one of many Rib Fests that occur over the summer so strap in, lol.
Dig into some Venezuelan arepas from El Fogon (8026 118 Ave.)
I brought an out-of-town friend to one of my favourite hole-in-the-wall restaurants El Fogon Latino last week for their delicious Venezuelan arepas (open faced buns with your choice of filling—I love the chicken and cheese!). I also put a ton of their addictive green pepper sauce onto my arepa—and their soups are so good too!
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
Stay Tuned! Giveaway Next Week
In next Wednesday July 6’s newsletter, subscribers will get a chance to enter to win one of two $25 gift cards to the NEW Fuwa Fuwa Windermere location—whose grand opening is Saturday, July 16, 2022. Fuwa Fuwa is North America’s fluffiest souffle pancakes and the Windermere location will be the flagship Edmonton store (biggest, widest selection of pastries—and the only location serving up housemade gelato as well as souffle cheesecake in addition to pancakes and other sweet treats!)
I’m actually working with Fuwa Fuwa to promote their grand opening (#FuwaFuwaWindermere_Partner) so I’ll be doing a different giveaway on my Instagram prior to the Grand Opening as well, but only my newsletter subscribers get a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards in July 6’s email! (tell a friend to sign up!)

This Sunday: Q&A with Karly Watson
Every other Sunday, I profile a new “interesting person” in a Q&A series just for paid newsletter subscribers. The next person I’ll be profiling this Sunday, July 3, 2022 is content manager and diet culture educator Karly Watson.
Here’s an except from the Q&A:
On social platforms there is a ton of misinformation fed to us on a daily basis, especially in the fitness/wellness industry. I think it’s important to take a step back and ask yourself “is this truly good for me?” Block, unfollow, and curate your feed to what you need it to be in order to flourish. Eating disorders come in all shapes, sizes, gender identities, and walks of life. You cannot tell if someone has an ED by looking at them. Currently children are 200x more likely to develop an eating disorder than type 2 diabetes. This is an epidemic of great proportions. Most girls will start to recognize and develop poor self image, and have thoughts about dieting starting at age 6. Disorder eating and eating disorders are on a spectrum and it is very easy to slip from one side to the other if diet cycling is involved.”
