Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up even if it’s no longer a provincial requirement. Get vaccinated/boosted. Stay safe!
#InvestInOurPlanet this Earth Day, Earth Month, and every day (various)
Earth Day is April 22. In Edmonton, you can sign up for a free Corporate Clean Up Challenge, organize your own clean-up (pick a neighbourhood or park!), attend one of these online Earth Day-focused events, and check out this list of 52 ways to #InvestInOurPlanet.
Learn about how a museum “collects” a pandemic (online)
The Royal Alberta Museum is hosting a free virtual talk titled ‘Collecting a Pandemic’ on April 22 from 12-1 p.m. about how museums do “rapid response collecting” of objects related to the pandemic to ensure it could interpret the pandemic for future audiences. Sounds super interesting!
Check out The Invisible in Concert (ATB Financial Arts Barn)
I had the pleasure of seeing The Invisible at Catalyst Theatre JUST before the pandemic hit in Feb 2020 and now The Invisible is back for a limited performance at the Westbury Theatre / ATB Financial Arts Barn this April 22 & 23. Get tickets to experience “powerful music and spellbinding story of seven exceptional female operatives who risk their lives to fight a dangerous war of sabotage, propaganda, and espionage” (inspired by real life woman SOEs (Special Operations Executives).
Book an Alberta Avenue food tour (various stops along 118 Ave.)
Chef Table Living have launched new Food Walking Tours along Alberta Avenue! You can choose from an afternoon or evening, with multiple food stops. 118th Avenue is such gem for family-owned food spots. If you’re rarely there, or haven’t tried the restaurants here, food tours a great way to get a little taste of all the different spots!
Make a Spring wreath (Spruce Avenue Community Centre)
The Spruce Avenue Community Centre is hosting Spring Wreath Making Workshop as a fundraiser for their community garden. Your ticket includes materials to make your unique wreath, plus a light snack and beverage. The workshop is Saturday April 23 from 6-8 p.m.
Plus…
RSVP for EPL’s free Infertility Awareness Week Panel
I will be speaking on the Edmonton Public Library’s Infertility Awareness Week panel about infertility on Tuesday April 26 from 7-8:30 p.m. It’s a free virtual event.
1 in 6 couples in Canada experience infertility, and this figure has doubled in Canada since the 1980s. As you may know, I am open about my infertility struggles and I hope that the more open we all are about this topic, whether you are personally affected by it or not, the less painful it will be for those who are.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.

Kasey Ramen, purveyor of delicious home ramen kits and occasional pop-up ramen events, is selling tickets to his next Ramen Pop-up at District Cafe in downtown Edmonton TODAY (Wednesday, April 20) at 5 p.m. The pop-up dates are April 24 or 25. Try the Kimchi Nabe hot stone bowl at Noodle Bar by Nomiya (11238 104 Ave.)
Speaking of noodles, I just love the Kimchi Nabe hot stone noodle bowl from Noodle Bar by Nomiya. It’s a spicy tonkotsu broth with kimchi, chicken, tofu, glass noodles, and seasonal veggies and I also add a bowl of steamed rice to sip with the broth. It’s perfect. They also have other ramen and rice bowls you should try if you haven’t yet!
Order a custom Miel by Mel cake (online)
For my niece’s birthday last week, I ordered a custom BTS rainbow cake from Miel by Mel and it turned out beautiful and delicious! She does some pretty amazing cake designs and sells cupcakes too. Mel’s cakes are on the sweeter side so if you want less sweet, let her know when ordering!
Speaking of birthdays—today (April 20) is my partner Mike’s!
Happy birthday Mike!!
Get 50% off you second poke bowl from Hawaiian Poke & More (7256 101 Ave.)
One of my favourite local poke spots, Hawaiian Poke & More, is doing a Poke Promotion this week only (April 19-24) where you buy one get your second poke bowl 50% off. They recommend you call to pre-order as they can get busy with orders! Grab some spam musubi while there too!
Try the pizzas and pastas from Italia Mia (14981 Stony Plain Rd.)
Thanks to Pauline for recommending Italia Mia in west Edmonton. They’re a fairly new Italian restaurant owned by two brothers from Italy. From Pauline: “They are authentic Neapolitan pizza. They seem to be struggling a little bit. Each time I go there – it is very quiet and no one is there. But their pizza is AMAZING! I think they are just not very well known. They don’t have a very big sign so it’s very easy to miss! Anyways, please give it a try! They have cheese imported from Italy.”
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.

If you love Alberta, you’ll love this calendar! I’ve partnered with local artist Jason Blower of Snow Alligator to promote his Alberta Landscapes Calendar Kickstarter Campaign! From the foothills to the badlands, the rolling prairies ☁️🌾 , and the Rocky Mountains 🏔 , these are beautiful settings beautifully illustrated by one of Edmonton’s most talented artists. 💯
You have until April 30 to support the campaign, and there are lots of great rewards you can get—from the calendar itself, to 11×14 prints like I’ve got here, to canvases, original artwork commissions and more! (#SnowAlligator_Partner)
